As the pre-Christmas preparation madness wound down and the new water solenoids in the Westy L5 Laundromat had been replaced, I figured it was time to try washing something other than a few old towels in the Westy. I threw in a load of shirts to test the Westy's "Legendary tangling ability" that gansky1 had told me about...
They looked good while washing...

Could have been worse...

Yep, those shirts were tangled up but good. Still, I have seen worse! I very briefly had a Danby 'portable' washer that had an impeller at the bottom of the tub (like a big version of a Hoover's) and that machine tangled the hell out of everything! These shirts came apart pretty easily compared to that Danby machine...

I kinda started on the CD6 dryer and did a little 'exploratory surgery'... Stay tuned!

just think of it as a tiny tornado inside your westy.

In one of my older Better Homes and Gardens magazines from the 50's they have a Maytag washer ad that shows a pile of tangled laundry-Maytag says-"No more Whipped wash if you use our new Maytag Automatic!"I guess we now know what washer makes the "Whipped wash".My computer doesn't have a scanner.Would like to show the ad.

Look it with good eyes!

It's much easier to unload the machine. Just grab one item and pull it!

You don't even need to use a laundry basket. LOL

Westinghouse!

Paul - even with the tangeling and slower spinning I would take this machine over anything they make today. This is a real Gem.

Hey paul... the machine looks great !
Hope that you had a good weekend.
The Westinghouse older fronts seems to me when observed washing, that the water level is higher and the baffles are softer then some other wash tubs. Higher water levels, even in my modern machines filled high, will TANGLE the clothes especially shirts. And since it only turns in one direction makes it worse. Like to see if other loads work better for you like TOWELS , JEANS , T-SHIRTS , etc.
It( See it wash ) looks like robert's load is a mixed load and looks to be doing well. Definitely Fun to watch the machine has terrific wash action with the suds slapping on the clothes LOVE it.

P.S. Need some American Detergents lol... Here they are that i had put together from friends shore house we hang out at once a year.
I need to make a thread on that.
Crazy mix of shore detergents we got.
Well i got he he like to try other brands when on vacation.

But does laundry that has been tangled get clean? You would think that since the fabric is compressed in a tangle, it wouldn't be as clean as it would be if washed untangled.

Yes! I was kinda surprised how well it did on those shirts.

And you're right, Pete, a machine that age deserves to do pretty much what it wants! Well, except leak, smoke, or split apart during a spin... LOL

Seeing these pix makes me miss my identical rusty but trusty old Laundromat. It did the same thing with shirts but it was worth it to watch it wash.

Great tangle-pics! I've found that it isn't as bad as some and worse than others. It's just too cute for words and we put up with the down-side for the fun of it all.

Paul, Paul, Paul...

I've been holding off "gettin into" my Westy set until after the holidays, but you're making it a challenge!

She's beautiful, I know you're mighty proud.

Memories

I remember a laundromat that had coin-op Westy slanties. The cabinets were different than the domestic models. They just had a round shell over the drum, and side-swing doors, but they were mechanically the same. I remember the drum always in motion from beginning to end, and rotating in the same direction (clockwise, I believe). It would rotate through fill, wash, rinse, drain, and "clunk" into spin, and tumble to loosen the clothes before shutting off. And yes, they spun much slower than top-loaders (even an Inglis would spin faster).

The dryers were made by Ald (which I understand was also made by Westinghouse). They were turquoise, and had the "Aldry" label. I think they may have had positive airflow. I remember going around back to check the exhaust vent, and the exhaust always came out mildly, with barely any force - even with all dryers running.
