For That GE...

...I suggest garlic, crucifixes and a stake through the heart.

GEs of that vintage are extremely troublesome, due to their Perma-Tuf tubs. Perma-Tuf was a plastic coating over steel, and I've characterised it here before as "not very perma and none too tuf." Any breach in the coating will lead to rust, which makes the coating bubble, which spreads the rust, which makes the coating bubble...

These DWs are also prone to rust in places where the coating is not necessarily breached, but is thin. They include the bottom lip of the inner door and the sump. GE used to sell a repair kit that was a two-part epoxy; you were supposed to scrape away the bubbled coating and the rust and then apply the repair stuff. These repairs always looked like the tub had leprosy, and they lasted - oh, a good three or four weeks before you saw that the rust was starting again.

If you find a GE of this vintage that hasn't been used much, you might find one with good Perma-Tuf, but if you put it into service, you're going to have trouble sooner or later, and my bet would be on sooner.

You want an old DW, get a KitchenAid or a D & M or something else with a porcelain or stainless interior. GEs of this era are trouble.

P.S.: If you find one of these that doesn't leak from the lower edge of the door, I want to know. They do say there's a first time for everything.
