OK, so yesterday, I went to pick up the Frigidaire washer and dryer at that house that is being renovated. I had to pay the delivery guys from the local appliance store to do it, but it was worth it. No bulkhead access and steep basement stairs would have made this a horrible challenge.
The good news is that I had opportunity to go over and thoroughly clean and polish the machines on Sunday. The rust on the washer was only surface and on the side facing the sink. So a little fine grain sandpaper and I was set.. I guess the basement was a bit damper than I originally thought...

ANYWAY...we got the units to the warehouse where the repair guy I know will check them thoroughly. The warehouse manager, whom I haven't seen in at least 8 months pulled me aside and said " well now you have two 1-18's". Being me I was a bit confused. He then took me back into the darkest reaches of the warehouse to show me a gleaming, white mint condition 1-18. Apparently they took it in a while ago and the repair guy already went over it and made a few minor repairs and it is ready to go. They had been saving it for me all along. I couldn't get to the model number, but it looks to be a late model, quite close to TOL. There were an awful lot of selector knobs and it had an optional panel lamp to boot. It also had a different lid switch - on the brown one I just got, the switch is a little metal button in the lid hinge. ON this one, you can see the opening at the back center of the loading port. Can't wait to get that baby home to fire it up in place of the Whirlpool shredmaster.

On a related note, for the second time in six months, I had to snake the laundry sink drain line thanks to that Whirlpool shredder. The lint that comes out of it is pulverized to a paste and builds up quickly inside the pipes. Perhaps it has something to do with my plumbing, but I never had that problem with the MAytag, the Amana and certainly never with the GE Filter Flo. Besides, I am tired of resewing buttons on my shirts and shredded towels.......

..sounds like you may need a filter of some kind over the drain hose.

1) pantyhose and a rubber band or twist-tie kinda thing

2) fancier metal/mesh version of same sold for that purpose.

3) then there is always a strainer cup at the bottom of the sink availablel in metal or plastic.

But then forget to clean #3 and *wonga* water everywhere!

Wow, Anthony that is super cool, congrats. Now you can have two 1-18's pulsating away at the same time!

How fun! Please post some pictures when everything is installed.

You can never be too rich, too thin, or have too many 1-18&#

Anthony:

You are living a charmed life! Congrats and have fun with the jet action! :-D

Excellent!! Your persistence has paid off, Anthony and now you have two, plus a dryer! The white one at the repair shop sounds like the TOL - probably a 78-79 model with the later lid switch over the filter.

Enjoy and keep us posted on what you think of the new babies when they get home!

WOOHOO!!! Congratulations on yet another 1-18!

Those truly are amazing machines. After using a Shredmore you'll notice a difference in gentleness.

Keep us posted on what happens!

Thanks again to all for the congrats and the support. I have to admit that it was a pretty exciting feeling to actually get my hands on both. I will get to the model number and let you all know which it is as well as posting some pics as soon as I can.
Venus- I am not sure about living a charmed life, but I sure was lucky to find those. I was particularly happy that the warehouse guy remembered to pull that machine aside for me. When I first started talking with them, they found the whole thing rather strange, but they have a better understanding of the appeal of older appliances. In fact they have now started pulling interesting looking things and putting them aside as they come in. So far they have pulled a turquoise Frigidaire electric range and a pink Frigidaire undercounter dishwasher, both in mint condition as well as a 50's Kelvinator refrigerator and a few Ironrite mangles. My point is that they are now starting to look at these things not as junk but as significant pieces of engineering and construction. Both guys admitted that when they ran the white 1-18, they remembered how great those machines were! Hah! We knew this all along......

REgarding the current lint situation with the Shredmore, I have tried the screen over the drain, but I have to confess that sometimes I forget to clean the screen and the results are not pretty. In fact everyone I talked with that has done that eventually went back to just letting the water go down the drain for the same reason. I still can't get over it myself. If that machine pulverizes the lint into an unrecognizable paste, what is it doing to my clothes??????

lint collector

sonds like the mesh over the hose is the best idea. Second is to put chlorine bleach down the drain every so often when you know the machine isn't going to be used overnight.
