Hi guys, managed to pick the Hotpoint up on Saturday. as it said on ebay it is leaking but a tiny amount, say a table spoon per load. Not 100 percent sure where from, possibly somewhere from the soap draw to the drum but not sure and with the help of the lovely Rob I have put in new motor brushes and it goes like a champ. Still need to do some cleaning and detailing but It doesn't look bad for an old machine.

Hi Richard.

In the flesh it looks even better! Was great to see another chrome door equipped 95450 after all these years.

Bit of a New Generation 1985 thing going on here!.....

Initailly we assumed your machine to be an early one, judging by the timer, but date code 89 dates your machine to May 1985.
That makes your 95450 the same age as mine and Robs 96702 top loader, two months older than our 95360 (date code 91 - July 1985) and all three of these machines from the same year as our 95620. All from 1985!
Oh and our Hotpoint New Generation compact is date code 88 - April 1985.

Will deffo pop over soon with a replacement dial and some white enamel touch up paint.

Lovely machine and congrats on its acquisition.

Cheers
paul

Thanks Paul and thanks for your help. It would be great to have a new dial and to touch up the few rust spots. I think once that's done it will amazing.

Nice one - my great grandma had this same exact machine. In fact, one of my first washer memories asides our own and my nana's machine, is being told off by my great grandma bless her soul when I was 3 or 4 for squeezing the foil off an empty Fruit Pastilles packet into the gap on the bar on the timer, and for not putting it in the bin. Random but happy memories =)

Great stuff, the best of the best, hope this machine has the signature buzzing inter lock which you will here when the pump is running.

You cant beat the sound of the Hotpoint commutator motor.

Ere watch out Rich that the leak is not because of the dreaded HotRot on the back plate :-)

Glad you got it going Rich, did the new brushes make much of a difference to the motor noise?

Shame that the brushes I pulled out of it were actually quite long and would of given a good load more use but that chip out of the left one were hopefully what was causing the crackle.

The black ones which I hope you got are a much better bet for bedding in.

Now just swap that Dyson and Miele out for some true British Quality!!! LOL

Should I bring my Hoover polisher down with me? You supply the bowling balls, be sure to have some fun in that fab lounge of yours strking down some of those 'vacs' you had lined up in the hall lmao.

Any more advice just lemme know :) :)

That statement actually made me LOL so hard, especially seeing as it is a commonly known fact that quality control at Hotpoint was pretty dire. Even more especially, as the germans are the only ones producing anything NEAR the old standards of reliability and quality.

Glad it put a smile on your face :) :) :) LOLOLOLOLOL Like a bit O Banter meself.
I would also agree to say the Germans produce stuff NEAR the quality British machines too. Near but not quite close, I much agree with you there!

Which magazine at the time reported that Miele only had Average Reliability from its surveys with enough owners to report. Hotpoint and Hoover also fared with Average Reliability making several models Best Buys.

Hotpoint Home Laundry - Only Hotpoint Has It All.
The New Gens were certainly the classiest and definitely received the most informative and knowledgeable brochures.

German Quality not as good as British

Now that is funny. Really whilst British brands were good, in particular Hoover and Servis, even these were behind the German brands in almost every instance.

As for replacing the Miele dishwasher with a British machine, which one exactly, a Hotpoint? So a Bosch then LOL!

I'm sorry but as far as I'm concearned the only reason there are any Hotpoints still going now is because they were so cheap and easy to repair with parts readily available and good service infastructure, yes this is an excellent attibute to the Hotpoint name, but they were certainly not reliable machines by my understanding of reliability.

Even the ones I knew of back in the day were rusty, had cracked fascias, doors repalced or damaged and required regular and numerous reapairs, mainly brush changes and bearings. The cabinets also reverberated when they span, and they were all fond of throwing themselves accross the room at you.

It may be a more modern machine but it's still based on the same design, my Mum's WM52 really was the biggest pile of junk, didn't wash properly, was probably worse at rinsing than most more modern machines, broke down frequently and shook the kitchen apart on spin. This is what all Hotpoints I know of are/were like. It only lasted four years and the Hoover (Candy) that replaced it was really a refreshing change for the better!

Even the twin tub I've just got, the cabinet reverberates when the spinner runs and the fascia is all cracked, I've come to expect this from GEC Hotpoint though so it's really no surprise.

All things aside they really do bring back fond childhood memories for most of us, and make some great noises and have lots of drama, but as a practical functional machine I've found them to be some of the worst of both the old and the new, and an old Hoover, Servis, Zanussi or German made machine would certainly be a HUGE step up IMHO.

Having said this the machine in this post is absolutely beautiful and in amazing condition for it's age. I'd love one to play around with :)

Matt

Hang On Hang On!

This is not a thread for debating about whats best or better, I simply made a banterous comment from admiration to Hotpoint.
Rich's kitchen would certainly suit his Hotpoint and look fab.

Now seeing as I addressed that post to Richard himself and nobody else I find it really unfair that the pair of you come hot headed into the thread and attempt to start flame wars especially as my comments had no reasoning or goading for you to do so.

Not a rant but something for you both to think over and realise.

Rob

Wasn't trying to sound hot headed

just don't really understand how you can say Hotpoint, or any of the British brands for that matter are/were better than most German made machines of their time, and the high end (Miele etc) machines of today.

That's what I was trying to getting at.

Matt

I can say that because as I posted above.......

"Which magazine at the time reported that Miele only had Average Reliability from its surveys with enough owners to report. Hotpoint and Hoover also fared with Average Reliability making several models Best Buys."

Servis ironically scored Below average with owners reporting for Which not to reccomend any of their machines as best buys.

Its long since we had a thread about New Gen Hotpoints and I thought it would be nice to add other things not included in previous threads like Which magazine information and details such as I have posted.

Sorry if I sounded like I was being hot-headed. It was only meant as a sort of "my 2 cents" thing. I actually really love old hotties. Had a nightmare of a time with an Electra branded Hotpoint in the early 90's, but prior to that, they were great. HOWEVER, in todays market, Hotpoint doesn't score anywhere near as close as a Miele, Bocsh, Zanussi or even a Beko for wash performance and reliability. Shame, as they were once great. GOD DAMN YOU, MERLONI!!

aaaand back to the 95450

I really cant wait to get the cleaning rags and paint out!

Growing up with the 95450 at my god mothers and the 95452 at my parents, for just shy of 20 years, the 4 button jobbies really are machines close to my heart.

Below is a scan of the manual cover from my mums machine, which i rescued from the paper recycling back in 2005. If you gander carefully you might just make out that 95452 is circled. Shame I couldnt get the machine too! 2 years too early for that i am afraid.

Hearing your 95 last Saturday Richard, really did bring memories flooding back.

Paul

This was the dryer that was stacked on my godmothers 95450 (the 93580).

Can anyone see the cheeky trick thats been pulled? Hoover used to pull it too....

Hiya Mike

Certainly would have solved the static electricity build up issues, with that style of drum! lol

Them and Hoover - such cheats! To think people wouldnt notice - Hoover were really bad with it in their logic advertising.

Still - a bit entertaining, 25 years on.

Hi Guys thanks for all the comments, I'm more of a Bosch, Zanussi and top loader sort of Guy but I'm really falling for the Hoover electron's and I'm loving this Hotpoint. Like alot of us, I grew up with these machines and sort of took them for granted, handn't seen one for along time and like Paul said as soon as I heared it running memories came flooding back the spin drain is great.

Rob, I've put in new black brushes like you said and the motor sonds much better no more crackle also managed to get a sump hose as well but haven't fitted it yet. Thought I'd save that for when you come down next and whilst the touch up paints drying we could get the bowling balls out and see if we can get a few strikes in lol.

Mike, your right about those OOva, sorry OOVAH eng and their stickers, that will have to come off.

Cheers Rich

Stickers,

Well just as another hint and tip from the walking and talking Daily Mail encyclopedia of household management.

Smear some full fat mayonnaise over that sticker and leave it to soften. Use plastic spatula to lightly scrape it away with no effort. works a treat everytime with no tempting as it may seem gouging from finger nails and other sharp implements.

Glad its ok though. The sump hose is a 5 minute job if you really feel up to it LOL pair of pliers and a few swear words usually help.

One of those jobs that id certainly have a scissor lift platform for in my dream workshop. :P

Rob, thanks for the advice, I've had a little go with WD40 and my finger nails but shall stop that and try mayo. Don't have any full fat at the mo as trying to loss some weight and failling dismaly only have light which taste no way as nice so shall trot to sainsbury's tomorrow.

Memories.....

Wow, thats the exact machine my parents had when i was born and that started off this whole nutty love oif washing machines that i still have today. It looks lovely. I saw it on eBay too, sadly too far for me. 99p was an absolute steal!

Ours was a funny bit of kit really, not particularly reliable - we had a couple of occasions where it failed to stop filling, numerous sets of brushes & door seals and a couple of floods when it ate underwear and left them in the gravity trap - apparantly when this became blocked the machine simply drained onto the floor instead - not quite sure if this was meant to happen, but it did on ours!

However, it did last a pretty long time, 12 years. Not bad when considering it was on at least twice a day and did countless boil washes of my terry towling nappies!

Sadly an intermittent leak & the suspension leg detatching from its mountings spelt the end of it in our household, though it was used as a donor machine to a friends Hotpoint and was actually still working when it was taken away.

Never owned a Hotpoint since. Less than bargain prices followed by a marked drop in quality, largely thanks to Merloni, have seen to that, but fond memories live on :)

Liam
