I wonder if someone can answer this for me. You have the two knobs next to the toggle switches that are the agitate and spin speeds. The little knob to the right of that is obviously the water level. The top two toggle switches are obviously the wash and rinse temperatures. What's the 3rd toggle switch for? Did this have a 30 minute auto soak cycle on the dial?

Aren't they the separate selectors for wash speed and spin speed? |

The pictures obviously answer the questions asked earlier. I've still yet to see one of these machines in person. It's obviously one that, if it was to be found near me, would most certainly be added to my collection. The machine in the photos here, with my understanding, does not have the variable clutch any longer. It was replaced some time ago as many of these had been. My curiousity has been just how slow is the agitation in this machine. "Gentle" is pretty darn slow in my 3-speed. I can only imagine what "handwash" must be like. Anyone have any experience with these? Jon |

I looked at the photo of "DADoES'" GE, and it does have a 2nd Rinse Toggle Switch. I would think that a TOL or High-End Washer by any manufacturer would have a 2nd rinse option at the very least, let alone GE. --Charles-- |

This washer, with the ability to control everything, seems like the perfect choice for a control freak like me. Although, I'd probably waste too many hours trying to find the "perfect" settings for speed.... When were these made? It seems to me that it might have been an era when there were the Lady Kenmores with "push a button, and all the work of setting up the cycle is done for you!" approach. |

The variable speed washer had the same top and lower speed that the three speed washer had so it made no practicable difference in any way which is way the feature did not sell well or last very long. This is also true of the KMs, Norges Frigidares and Hotpoints-Easy washers with this feature It was truly a gimmick. The 2nd rinse option was not a common feature on washers in the 1960s it was just starting to be added to top models.

The very gentlest agitation was pretty neat in the Frigidaire. It had less action than doing laundry by hand. The slowest spin was just enough to empty the water out of the tub. |

The first version of the "Heavy Duty 18" Versatronic had an all-blue tub just like the TOL Programmed Washer. But you're right, the cycle dial wasn't as good as the one on the TOL and it lacked a solenoid controlled bleach dispenser; the dispenser on this model was what GE described sometimes very bluntly as a "bleach funnel". Would still, however, kill to find one either GE or the Hotpoint version. Macy's had this pair sitting in its basement showroom from 1969 to 1971:
