You'll remember the Terq 59 Maytags I brought home from RevvinKevin's Wash In recently. Well, I'm starting the evaluation process prior to teardown and rebuild. I love this set! Anyway, I'm starting with the dryer (letting the anticipation build for the washer...). I'm giving her a quick clean up to see what needs to be done...

Well, she runs quiet enough for pre-teardown but I was sweating if the standing pilot gas burner would function...

Why did I even worry?

The pilot safety stayed lit and... Houston, We have ignition! A nice gentle flame. Temps are right on the money!

Question? I know, I'm getting to it...

redcarpetdrew's profile picture
I noticed that there was a unfamiliar light from inside the cabinet when the gas burner cycled off. Like my 641c, I knew this ran the drum light while it dried. Then it hit me! The 641c's light works because the U/V light was bypassed and removed prior to my getting it. But THIS one... Could it be?!?

YES! A functioning U/V light! I pulled the rear cover and behold...

I've never seen one functioning! Well, truthfully, I've never seen one PERIOD! And there it was...

SO, the question is: What does this light really do? I've heard several things but am not completely sure. I've heard they are antigermicidal and then I've heard that they were actually not as healthy as let on... Any ideas? Should I leave it in the circuit or should I bypass it? Is Maytag the only brand to have one or are there others? Yes, this little bluish light piques my curiosity...

The light has germicidal properties. Their effectiveness in washers and dryers was debatable, but their use was supposed to impart a slight line dried scent to the clothes. They were probably taken out of machines because kids(and some adults)like to stare into machines, and uv light shining into the eyes over long periods of time is harmful to the eyes. Probably more non-sense from the government. Going outside without sun glasses does the same thing. The big bulb that lights the drum usually serves as the ballast. I would leave it alone, if you want your dryer to remain authentic. If it burns out, you may have to do some hunting to find another one. Other brands had them. My roommate is eight years older than me and he remembers his mother had a dryer with one in it. He doesn't remember the brand, but there is a picture of a dryer like it on this site in one of the members collections. If I run across it, I'll direct you to it. Pretty dryer, by the way. To bad about the porcelain. If you can find just the right color, you could touch it up a bit. Acrylic artist paint and brush would probably work fine. Acrylics are a lot stronger than they used to be(as opposed to oil). You could redo it with oil, if acrylic doesn't hold up, but it takes longer to dry. Start off with you're best match on the turquoise. Then if you need to, mix in a small amount of white, lighter or darker greens or blues or possibly lt. gray until you get the match. Test on a piece of cardboard or similar material before you put it on the dryer. A steady hand, good light, and good sight are a plus, of course. Hope I helped. Good luck. BKK

Gee I had no idea that light was there.... but then I never did pull the back panel off when it was in my possession. On other units which had that bulb (Like the 1956 Rheem dryer I had for a short time), the light always shined into the drum and onto the clothes. That in itself makes me wonder how effictive it could be when behind the drum like this one. Or maybe it just adds (UV?) ozone to the air as it's drawn into the drum???

Hmmm....

I do not know about washers....

but I know Kenmore/Whirlpool had them in some of their more deluxe dryers during the 1950's and into the early 1960's ... and if I am not mistaken, Hamilton dryers had them too. Does anyone else know who put them in their dryers besides these three manufacturers?...PAT COFFEY

Nice terq HOH. Our DG700 (white, mint) always had the little bulb. I had no idea what it was for. Shame my dear mom let the Sears people take it away when she got her new pair a few years ago. The thermo coupler goes every 10 years or so on the HOH's. You may want to get one to have on hand. Such sweet dryers.

Speed Queen had them, my 1954 dryer has one. Frigidaire used them, Bendix sold a kit for older dryers that could be installed in the field (I have one somewhere). Does anyone know if GE used them? Hotpoint? Early ABC/Kelvinator?

I remember for certain Hamilton using them.

Kevin, I'll bet your white Maytag dryer has it as well. It's about the same age and basic style as the 741c. Take a look...

Andrew, I hadn't realized you brought these back home with you. That dryer is awsome. I can't wait to see them restored. I like the black/red buttons for the light on the control panel. It makes it easier if you need the light as you can leave it on. My step mom had one of the later AMP series washers with a control panel that looked like that one. Take care, Dano

GE used them in some models through 1956. The 1951 dryer has one. My TOL 1956 GE DA 720N with their first auto dry came with a cake-style air freshener. Down in the bottom of the outer tub was the light fixture with the socket for the incandescent bulb and, since they operated in series, a screw in ceramic placeholder in the socket for the ozone bulb since it was not needed with the air freshener. Since the air freshener cake was long gone and irreplaceable, I replaced the plug with an ozone bulb.

So this model is an HOH. We have the dryer with that control panel that is the pre-HOH model with the open coil heater at about 10 O'clock, a HUGE perforated drum, 3 inch vent, child-killer door latch and lint drawer at the bottom right front corner.

No Andy my dryer doesn't have this light (unless it's hidden somewhere else within the cabinet where I can't see it). I believe (and I could very easily be wrong) these anti-germicidal / ozone / sunshine fresh lamps were a product of the Fab 50's.

Your TA142 / 741C set was built in either April or November (can't remember now) 1959 and my A700 / DE701's were built in December 1962.
