While I'm far from being an appliance expert....

the first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the inside of the door was that it must have been a display model in a store originally. Does anyone know if I'm correct?

Isn't there a kickpanel missing? I don't think that Maytag would have part of the chassis showing on a finished product.

The old "thrifty Scotsman" stereotype. AMC used it too, my Rambler has the "Super Flying Scot" engine.

I believe the kickpanel is correct for the budget Highlander line.

Yes, silver kick-panel is correct.

Studebaker also marketed some cars and trucks in the late 50's as "Scotsman's"

And

Delta's coach-class airfare was "Royal Scotsman".

A very sweet little HOH dryer.

Nah, the cabinet is just recessed and painted gray. Maytag did that with their 50's and early 60's washers/dryers.

Looks like an unused DE500.

Maytag wanted their cheap washers and dryers to look cheap so that people would want to buy the higher end of the line models. The Highlander dryers did not have a complete inner door panel, but rather a raised disc on the inner side of the single panel door that sort of mated to the gasketed drum opening. It provided some thermal insulation. That is why it would have been very easy to pop this advertising panel in the door for display. It's funny how long it took Maytag to finish up using those big old wide dryer cabinets from the pre-HOH design. The HOH dryer components did not need all of that room and the cabinet was eventually downsized to 28.5 inches wide.

Tomturbomatic, Cheap was true i remember shopping with the parents for a circa 66 washpower automatic, on the floor at Greenlee's in Flint michigan on that trip they had that highlander with the central control "center" and that little gyratator with no "barrel" just 4 blades. I was shocked to learn it was on sale. Mom and I had a laugh and Dad was quickly steered to the A106. My first successful appliance negotiation with the parents, quick footwork for a 7 year old. alr2903

Got a response from the seller. The model is a 66CB and the birth date decodes out as Aug of 1957.
