Hi, I'm looking for some NLA parts for some automatics in my small collection. I'm looking for a fabric softener dispenser for my Kenmore portable belt drive and my Hotpoint Rim-Flo. I've been able to locate part numbers, but they seem to be NLA through the suppliers I use. Would anyone have one or a suggestion or where to look? Also, I'm looking for the sink adapter kit for the portable. The ones I've been finding are about $110 new, but I don't need a new one and I don't have that much to burn on 1 part that I really don't need. Would any one have a used one laying around, I don't use it portable at the moment but it would be nice to have. I'm admittedly being cheap about the sink adapter kit, the fabric softener dispensers are my main interest.
Thanks -Tim |

Tim -
Last I heard Sears showed that they still had a softener dispenser in white, of course their site has bitten more than one or two of us when it indicated it had parts that it did not. But, try that, maybe call them instead of placing an internet order. Also, check ebay. I recently found a WP dispenser for about 9 bucks, new in box, and there was more than one. Good luck! Gordon |

Tim....Google--appliance parts....click on some of the sites....theres a few that offer USED parts from the junk pile, just not what I need, of coarse...
while were at it...I'm looking for a clutch for my GE FF...it could be a one speed or two, does not matter.....price for new is outrageous.....many places only have a few pieces available to rebuild, and the pieces that are broke are NLA, so I'm thinking if I found the whole thing it would be easier |

I don't have the part number off-hand, but will get whatever the last number was from my Whirlpool catalog for you toinght. Looks like these are not available at Sears any longer, so that's not a good sign that they can be had anywhere. I will let you know though! I think I have a white used one that you'd have to clean up if that is of any help. Gordon Gordon |

When you replace the clutch, REPLACE THE RELAY!!! I don't know which relay, but if you replace the clutch without replacing "the relay" the motor will soon burn out. Also, it's a great time to replace the belt. Unfortunately, the roll pin that holds the clutch to the motor is a royal b#$ch to remove. I ended up removing my motor and clutch together and taking them to a local appliance shop and having them remove the darned pin.
Keep the old clutch for some parts, Dave |

I replaced the clutch on mine and within 2 weeks, it blew the motor. Fortunately, Supremewhirlpool gave me a spare (he no longer had a FF). Now I just need to install it.
During those 2 weeks, the new clutch made a world of difference. The washer went from sounding like a rock tumbler to being quiet as a Maytag. Except that you could hear the sloshing and trickle of the water through the flume and FF pan. Dave |

Question: Does the clutch just sit/slide on the motor shaft and stay there...or is there a set screw to hold it in place?
I just took my motor out, and set it on the bench and the clutch lifted straight off, its bent inside somewhere, it really wobbles by itself... just wondering....I have not taken one of the apart in decades |

The pump drive is easy to remove you need a roll pin punch. The relay only needs replacement only if the motor had an electrical failure not bad bearings. The belt is not real criterial on GE washers replace if oily or worn looking but if you have a hard time telling the new belt from the old one save your money. Used clutch & motor assemblies are still very plentiful. If you have transmission problems get a good used one or better a rebuilt one they are less than $80 dollars, they aren't worth trying to fix.

I know how you feel, I'm dreading opening the back of the machine up... My Speed Queen SuperTwin was like that, everything I looked at just got worse and worse...
The Hotpoint seems OK, but it was a machine that was clearly used without maintenance, so who knows. My filter flume has been acting up so I popped the top and pulled it off and ran a piece of pipe cleaner through the hose and pulled out a 3 inch long section of compacted, wet lint. It works again, but not that great and sporadically. It's been filling the collar with lint and crap to the point of the collar not working at all. So not only will I have to investigate the pump, but the plumbing too. Mine needs a clutch, the spin is so slow to get up to speed that the clothes don't get spun out before they're re-saturated with the spray rinse. Oddly it's not noisy in normal mode, but she makes a lot of noise in gentle when it first kick over. The pump is also acting odd, it makes a cycling grunt noise that I thought was the clutch, but it only makes it with cold water in the tub, so I think it's the pump. Still a neat machine though... never a dull moment. |

It was always amazing to me that GE the one of the worlds largest makers of electric motors put these crazy 2-3-and 4 speed clutches in there washers no other company ever did something so silly to get two or more speeds. Anyway enough ranting all kinds of things go wrong the two speed clutches its best to have some spare complete assembles if you want to fix the old one. They are easy to fix if you have some good pts do note nothing gets lubricated inside the clutch to do so will cause other problems.

Yes, I agree it's odd that they don't use a multi-speed motor. They made the 2 speed motor in my parts Easy...
There are certainly pros and cons. The pump has to run at full speed to do the filtering on the GE's, but if using the Rim-Flo design it wouldn't matter the force. In regards to pump speed requirements, the clutch allows for multiple speeds of different parts. An electric pump would have also fixed the issue, but at the time probably more costly. Also while it is over-complicated, they do have a reasonable service life most go for 15-20 years before rebuild/replace and on a modern appliance timeline, that's an eternity. The 1-speed clutch is much simpler, and I have much less problem with it from what I can see of it's internals, I think the clutch is a good idea to have with the spin-drain load, but again with an electric pump, you wouldn't have the intense load with a neutral drain setup. Just a few points for both sides. I love the FF's, but some of the inner workings I feel could be done better especially considering how long they were around. I like some wash drama, which the GE's provide. I love KM/WP's as well and would never get rid of my portable set. The full size machines are great too, but we had them in the house growing up as a kid and they're just the usual for me. Good, reliable, but to me the GE is more fun to use. The KM portables are fun too, they're splashy and with the lint filter, they're an active wash. Frigidaires are neat too, but I would never want to work on one, nor do I believe I'd ever find one. Anywho, it looks like I'll be doing some major work on my GE as well, good luck Martin with your machine, and remember pics are ALWAYS welcome. |

Ok...so excited...couldn't contain myself
went to one of my parts guys..... got the motor/relay, 2 speed clutch wth belt and pump, all assembled .....for $25.00....... couldn't drive home fast enough..... installed in a matter of minutes...... NIGHT and DAY difference.....smooth, quiet, and ramps up to full speed spin before the spray rinse even starts, and agitation is vigorous..... I also got a few other parts for other machines while I was there....I'm a happy camper..... Tim...you have to find some parts for yours like this, prefer out of a newer machine, you will be suprised!....I'll get those other parts out to you as soon as I find a box to fit! |
