this washer was thrown out on the curb and i saw it on my way home from work. looks like a nice whirlpool late model machine, don't know anything else about it.

i threw it in the back of the jeep and got it home. gonna play around with it here and see if it runs. i'm hoping it will only need minor repairs, if any. i had one of these before with the kitchenaid name on it and it was a great washer! i left it in my old house when i sold it and wished i had brought it with me.

looks clean and new from the bottom. no rust anywhere.

i think i know what

rollermatic's profile picture
is wrong with it already. motor spins but no tub action so my guess is the direct drive coupler (or whatever it is called) is broken. i had this happen on my kitchanaid/whirlpool washer 4 years ago and it was a very easy and inexpensive fix.

that explains why it was at the curb! great, it will be a nice washer when fixed, one i will use as a main machine along with my frigidaire gallery front loader.

If there is any reason that it was tossed out is probly because it either needs a new motor coupler or new agitator dogs...nice find!

Agitator dogs are the little flips that make the top spiral section move, most times the groves wear out and the top doesn't move properly....about 5.00 for a set

That is a great washer. My aunt and uncle had one of those for about 14 years. It was heavily used and still worked when they got rid of it, all that was wrong with it was one back leg was broken and it would shake like mad when it spun. Of course they are also the type of people who commented they didn't want to pay for a new leg for it, so bought a new Maytag centennial instead.

nice little DD

nice find! looked like there was a 1998 date code on motor.
I have a 1993 KM DD 24" that was given to me and is under
repair-pretty long list of mechanical problems with it:
-top of tub post rusted away-loose tub/no spin
-leaking pump seal
-bad motor coupler
-motor centrifugal switch mechanism loose on shaft, but still
doing it's job
I bought a new coupler(of greatly improved design),the dump
will provide a good tub and other needed parts.
I have noticed at least 3 different coupler designs for these
DD machines:1984 had black rubber coupler insert,1993 had
white insert made of a urethane like material, but exact same
design as '84, recently bought replacement coupler has insert
of fiber reinforced"conveyer belting"rubber with 2 new drive
hubs with sintered iron shaft inserts and teardrop shaped
drive pins for more surface area.

Here's a good YouTube video that will pretty much explain the agitator dogs on the Dual Action's. Its a very informative video on how to replace them.

Good washer

My in-laws have one of these Whirlpools and it has served them very well. A lot of these machines seem to end up at the curb over an $8.00 coupler. Amazing - what a waste. I changed the one on the KitchenAid that we had in about 15 minutes.

question please?

rollermatic's profile picture
i got it inside and took off the cabinet. that was interesting in itself. the entire cabinet removed from the base.

anyway. how do i remove the motor from it's mount so i can replace the broken motor coupler? i have removed the pump and i see it has 2 clamps on each side of the motor. will removing the screws on these clamps remove it or do i have to remove the 4 bolts that appear to hold it to it's mounting clamp?

here are some pics.

thanks for your comments above and that video was great too!

to remove the motor just remove the 2 screws and unclip.
The 4 rubber bushings that support the motor tend to sag a bit
over time, affecting the alignment of the motor coupler,so i
might modify that arangement a little on my'93DD when i get
around to the reassembly of that machine. I noticed your
washer has different tub hole pattern than mine, yours looks
to be a '98 judging by the motor date code.I have heard some
of the later DD machines have a "neutral drain"feature but
i do not know what years.

yet another coupler style

that is the 4th different design of coupler i have seen
though it is pretty close to the style of replacement i
bought. As far as the rubber bushings i would just turn them
180* and reinstall.

Neutral drain DD

Yes - our 2000 model year KitchenAid DD washer had a neutral drain. However, we had a friend who has a "Design 2000" Whirlpool which was a very early DD machine and I think it was a spin drain.

Direct drive Whirlys have been of the neutral drain design for a very long time. I have a copy of service manual L-52 that covers them, dated 1985, saved by the dealer where I worked in the late 70s to early 80s.

There shouldn't be a need to reuse the rubber coupler bushing, a new bushing is included with replacement couplers.

indeed,a 1983DD i examined was spin drain and i am pretty
sure my '93DD is also spin drain. From what i understand from
a post on here a while back,on the neutral drain machines
the motor reverses direction to pump out, stops for a moment
then restarts in the same direction to engage spin, and that
a bad coupler with too much lash often causes malfunction
of this feature.

Sounds like my '93DD should be neutral drain-i will have to
grab a spare tranny at the dump to disassemble and figure out
how that works!

the old one was simply

rollermatic's profile picture
plastic and this is where it broke, in the center where the motor shaft grips it. this one should be much stronger i would think.

it went on easy enough and motor and pump snapped back in without a hitch.

The '89 DD I had was a neutral drain. If you messed with it during the drain cycle (e.g., pull the knob out and push it back in), you could make it spin with the water, although it didn't like it at all. I had a power hit once when it had just started draining, and when the power came back on, it ran for a few seconds and then tripped the breaker.

Probably some dealer or repair man just told the people who had this washer "Oh, that problem is not fixable, you need a new washer". Or they quoted them a repair price of $400.00 or so forcing them into a new machine. I heard this speech when my agitator dogs gave out. I repaired it myself with a $25.00 agitator overhaul kit and about 20 minutes of my time.
