I was dealing with empty nest syndrome as the shipper had finally picked up Gordon's Kenmores. They were fun to play with and video but I think Gordon was crawling the walls, so...

I got a call from a friend at another shop and asked if I'd like a Hobart K/A that was abandoned in their haulaway pile. Sure! Got over there and saw a dishwasher that was unkindly treated. Dropped on one corner and the panels bent as the former owners dragged it with the access panel dragging on the pavement while hanging by one screw.

All right, I felt sorry for it and decided to work with it...

Here's what I ended up with after a BUNCH of work!

A KDS-20! I'd really wanted another Surperba after giving the KDS-19 to Dan to replace his dying Maytag.

The control panel was in great shape. The whole dishwasher was in great shape which made it harder to understand how it ended up... Eeerrrgg! Customers!

Nice racks! Hmmm, last time I said that, I was watching a swimsuit contes...Errrmmmm! Never mind that! Anyway, I like the adjustable upper rack with full size sprayarm. No hits on the tub surface and the gasket it perfect.

Here's some of the thoughtless damage after some serious metal tweeking! The right hand side frame and legs were skewed and a couple of spot welds had popped. I realigned the lower frame and fixed the separated metal with screws...

The lower access panel and the corner of the main panel were also damaged with bent color panels and chrome trims from being dragged accross pavement. Spent time straightening all the above. The chrome trim is kinda beat up looking still but looking mutch better. The lower panel trim is loose and held with metal tape but it came out looking good. This has the changeable color packs. Black, white, almond and harvest gold. I changed from harvest to black.

This one has heated dry! It also heated the water during the prerinse sani-heat with that coffee pot sound.

Now what, you ask, was wrong with it?

redcarpetdrew's profile picture
What caused it to anger it's previous owners enough to give it a rude send off? Well... I noticed it wasn't spraying water. My first thought was a problem with the pump. WRONG! The filter you see here was PLUGGED with some kind of garbage and would not let water pass thru. Gave it a good cleaning and re-installed. BINGO! It now tosses the water just like a 'Hurricane In A Box' should. (Man, I LOVE that description!) You can see some residue that I have to get after running a cycle to clean out the system.

"Which one of you youngsters wants a piece of me?!? I'll outwash and outlast any one of you! In fact, one of your friends replaced me! Bring it on!"

Excuse me, folks. The 20's feeling much better so I'd better go get him before he causes serious damage to our new Maytag's and K/A's...

I haven't laughed that hard in a while! I think the youngin's are jealous of the superior build quality of ol grampa ;) Show dem young bastards how it's done, gramps!!

Wow, weren't we just talking about finding a KDS-20 a couple of days ago on the phone? We need to start talking vigorously about 700's, 900's, 902's, 906's,........ :D

I wish it was that simple. I've even tried clicking the heels together. Dem 906's are a hard to find lot... Kitchenaid dishwashers and Kenmore laundry seem to be the only thing on my horizon lately... (Much to Gordon's joy! LOL!)

Was there...

A version of this dishwasher that was essentially the same (looks-wise) but with taller, skinnier buttons? I seem to recall that's what my grandmother had, but haven't seen one like it since.
