There's a Maytag washer and dryer set listed on craigslist that needs a good home. It's listed in Des Moines, Iowa, but the actual location is Indianola, Iowa. Type in Maytag washer in the search field and it will narrow it down. I've been corresponding with him. He wants $200.00 for the set. They look to be in very good condition. The washer is a KA208 and the dryer is a KDG408(Avocado color). Around '75-'79, I would guess. I would have went for it, but I want a large capacity washer. This one is standard. The dryer is a larger capacity. Nice set, but I think I'll wait for my 808 set to come along. The guy said there's no stairs and only about 25 feet to the loading area. I'd still take an appliance dolly, though. There's no better way to move a washer and dryer. Hope someone likes. :)

806 Maytag

You mean 806's like these?
This set is Harvest Gold, which I'd like to keep, but I have an identical set in Avocado that could be had. Untested.

Response to 806 Maytag

Yes. Those are the kind I want. His washer is a KA208(standard capacity)and his dryer is a KDG408 large capacity,(not HOH)with the filter in the front. He was very helpful and told me they were in good working order, but I told him I wanted both machines to be large capacity and have lighted control panels, if I could find them. The color doesn't really matter that much. White, Harvest Gold, or Avocado would be my first choices. I really don't want to go too old and I don't want to get into the '80's. I want a center dial model and prefer gold color on the bottom of the panel. My ideal choice would be an A806 or A806S washer and a DG808 or DE808 dryer. I've heard that the standing pilot light on the DG806 HOH dryers' tend to have rust and deterioration problems. I've been told that the DG808s' have electronic ignition, so that problem is eliminated. Do you know about this rusting thing? Are the pilot light parts still available for the 806s'? I could go with the 806 HOH, just to get my hands on a nice set. And if I run across a DG808 or DE808 in the future, I could grab it. Will a full load from an A806 washer fit well in a 806 HOH dryer? I've heard they kind of run on the hot side and if over loaded they can burn synthetics. I always try not to over load. I've also heard that it's a bit easier to find parts for the 808 dryers.?
All that said, I am interested in your Avocado set. If you could tell me about them, I'd appreciate it. What's the model numbers on the machines? Are they in good shape cosmetically? A small scratch on the paint is OK. Not much rust and no chipped porcelain, I hope, especially in the tub. Control panel needs to be pretty much perfect. No scratches, broken plastic or glass, no missing buttons, etc. I can fix most mechanical problems, if I can get the parts, but I can't fix many cosmetics. How much would you want for the set? If you can get to them easily, some detailed pictures would be nice. I have a GMC Canyon p/u with a bed liner, so they wouldn't get scratched on the trip. I could bring an appliance dolly with me, if needed.
Sorry for the long drawn out message. Hope to hear from you soon. Thanks much.

Kenny, If you get around to examining the machines', could you get me the width and over all depth of the dryer, including anything that can't easily be removed, like the door knob, gas fitting, vent pieces, etc. The door to my laundry room isn't very wide and the dryer might have to go in sideways.
Thanks again.
Brian

A suggestion for the future....

Hi Brian, just a friendly suggestion for the future... Use private e-mail to contact someone (like Kenny) if you want to pass along any private information (like phone numbers) because remember.... this is a very PUBLIC forum.

On to the Maytags. The gold trim was on the control panels from late 1974 / early 1975 thru the 1980 model year.

I know of a PRISTINE 1980 A806/DE808 in almond that's located in Phoenix and the last time I heard the owner was trying to sell them. If you have an interest, e-mail me privately and I can put contact with the owner of this set.

Kevin

The avocado set is kinda buried, might take a bit to get to them.I know the model # is KA806 for the washer, and I believe KDE806 for the dryer. There might be pics on here, let me look.
The gas dryers with the pilot rusting problems were the ones with the gas valve in the top part of the dryer. I haven't heard of any major rusting problems with the HOH style.

Ok. Another reference to a Maytag with a valve in the top of the dryer. I don't even pretend to know all so what model is that one? The gas HOH's I've encountered have the valve/burner assy with standing pilot in the front lower right corner behind a access door. Also, having had chance to recently get into two (the 741c and a DG306), I can say that they BOTH had the rusting issue...

The only dryer I've encountered with a valve/burner in the top is the old Speed Queens with the access lid in the top right by the console...

MT GAS DRYERS

combo52's profile picture
All MT gas dryers before the HOH had the burner at the top of the machine early 1950s to aprox 1957 ?. All of the early MT gas dryers of this type had electric ignition and would have no rusting problems. All HOH dryers have a constantly burning pilot which produces moisture and can cause rust and corrosion problems inside the cabinet and control panel. The pilot also uses 3-6 dollars worth of gas per month with natural gas double this amount if you have propane gas. If you have a gas HOH dryer you care about I would turn off the pilot between wash days.

Hmmmmm, I've never noticed excess rust on pilot light Maytag's.

GAS DRYER PIOLOT LIGHTS

combo52's profile picture
All gas dryers with constant burning pilots had the potential for corrosion and electrical problems. The MT dryers with electronic control were the most badly effected the moisture would corrode the connections on the control board and the gas combustion products would turn the vinyl wiring soft and sticky.
