1965 Philco Ford Washer......

That SURE looks like my Great-Grandmother's Washer, only hers also had the Temperature Selector.

Interesting machine though.....

Why don't this guy just go ahead and join the club???? This guy sounds like he knows what he's talking about when it comes to vintage washers....

It's like a "find the differences pic"...
1) The lid hinge has been reversed.
2) No matter how you slice it, there are only 2 wash cycles.
Maybe 3) Isn't the black helmet over the rubber flapalator shiny chrome in higher end models?

That's Jimmy, "Filterflo" of AW.

I have not seen him post anything for quite awhile. He used to post here all the time. I bought a 1964 TOL Filterflo from him years ago. I was a great machine! I sold it to another member about 3 years ago, because I ran out of room. I don't have any of these machines anymore, but the GE pictured is the one I purchased from Jimmy.

hey!

Rickr-in your pic is that Whirlpool to the left still around? That looks to be a twin to the Whirlpool we had when I was growing up. It made the most distinctive woo-woo agitation sound and had a beautiful chrome agitator cap.

Hi Keith, "Toploader55" (Eddie) has the 61 Whirlpool, on Cape Cod. You are correct about that machine having all the cool early classic belt drive sounds. That was my first restoration. The machine came to me from South Carolina, so it has been around, so to speak.

other thread.

These washers are awesome. I got to operate Jimmy's TOL version in Canton. Interesting that it's called a Flex-o-wash. Shades of the Rotoflex, and like the roto-flex, it opens up the whole bottom of the tub for more clothing and great turnover.

The wash action is among the most unusual ever invented. Wish a had a pic of Jimmy control panel. Too gobsmacked at the time by the agitator.

This washer does the weirdest spray rinse ever. It drains, spins, sprays, and agitates all at once, for a few seconds, then repeats, etc., extremely entertaining.

It's Twin

I have the twin to this washer. It came out of a relative's home ... she did not have hookups in the house she bought, so it sat for over 25 years. The exterior is not as nice as the one on ebay, but she works fine. I need to start working on her exterior. Todd

PHILCO-FORD WASHER

combo52's profile picture
Very neat rare collectable machine. The earlier solid tub version [ Philco Automagic] like Robert has were much more fun they had much better turn over. But when they went to the larger perforated tub style the turn over all but stopped with heavy loads. I had one in my laundry room for a year or so and when you put even a couple pair of jeans in it it would take the entire wash cycle to turn the load over even once. I basically used it to wash loads of socks and underwear and other small stuff. This may have been designed this way to reduce the tangling that the earlier models suffered with Frigidare did the same thing when they went from the three ring agitator to the jetcone agitator it reduced turn over but also greatly reduced tangling.

The rare and wonderful Philco. Mine can take down more than a mouthfull but doesn't get a ton of water out of them due to the slower spin speed. I wish I knew the pulse/spin speeds on these. I use the Frigidaire as a spin dryer after washing in the Philco so the clothes don't take forever to dry.

Here is a short video of a 66 Philco washing, also at Jimmy's house in '08. They really are very cool machines.

What a beauty!

Fantastic looking machine!
These Philco's are becoming so rare.
I remember Jimmy had a beautiful top of the line Dexter with the same wash system! Had the black and red "agitator". It was a knock out!
Jimmy where you at?
Miss your post!

It looks so weird to me that the agitator post doesn't move at all in the later models. Kinda cool how they designed and engineered that.

This machine will run many years to come!
Great offering.

In that video I noticed the word "Contourfill". The font that is used on that is the same as I have seen on dashboards of Ford cars from the mid 60's era.

And yes, that is very strange that the clothes are rolling over very nicely without the top of the agitator moving. First time I ever saw that.

GM did the same thing. One of the most notable exchanges between divisions was the styling panel on the 1960 TOL Frigidaire ranges and refrigerators - exact same styling was using on the inset decor on the 1960 deVille and Series 62 cars. Fonts were also traded between Frigidaire and the car makes too.

To the new owner - enjoy your new Ford! Lovely machine.

1960 Cadillac inset also used by Frigidaire

You mean like the repeating circular design on the stainless inset on the door panel of this '60 Coupe DeVille?

In the early '70's my parents had my grandparents' 1960 Frigidaire and I do seem to remember a circular pattern on it - I think on the bottom trim panel and also a repeating circular design on the square door handle. I think the freezer door handle was a rectangle.

Thanks for posting that picture! That is my grandparent's 1960 Frigidaire except it was white and the handle inserts were blue if memory serves.
