...was a 1970 hotpoint in HG with a light blue agitator
my first memories of it date to about 1972,was my first
"watched"machine and my first repair, back in 1979-had to fix
a leaky pump, dad had to help because the bronze hub/seal seat
of the plastic impeller was seized to the steel motor shaft.
in 1981,had to fix again-clutch this time, one of the 3 clutch
friction pads came off, could not easily get parts for this in
'81 so got clutch parts from a junker.Worked good for a few
mo.then has trouble spinning as outer tub was not draining
well-was about to investigate when washer clunked to a stop
with a seized motor and started leaking,a portion of the
sediment tube that is on the outside of the washtub came loose
(aluminum corroded as i recall)and a piece must have lodged
in the drain tube to the pump, built up a lint dam, then found
it's way to the pump jamming it and cracking the plastic
pump housing.with parts not readily avalible, parents bought a
new KM BD(that i have today)and the hotpoint was junked-after
i took parts i wanted,it was eventually hauled to the dump
-caught one last glimpse of it as a 'dozer shoved it and a
white rollermatic into the pit. would gladly add a vintage
hotpoint to my fleet today...

1970 Hotpoint parts

Wow - in '81 it was hard to get parts for a '70 Hotpoint? Not good! Interesting - I guess they didn't share parts with the GE washers yet.

pumps were still pretty easy to find in'81,but clutch parts
were a problem. It was around 1972-'73 when the washers went
GE design, dryers were GE design much earlier or maybe always
GE-had a Ca.1960 hotpoint dryer and it was GE.

LATER HP SOLID WASHERS

combo52's profile picture
My brother and I started our service company in 1979 I only remember two or three HP STs that our customers had they weren't easy to fix or very durable washers in the end. In the 1970s when working at the Maytag Home appliance store we would fix one occasionally usually pump problems or oil leaks or of items in the outer tub blocking the drain.

probably only a few made it to the '90s

last one i saw was at the dump in 1991(HG too!)so i had to
have a look at it for old times sake,it was partly dissasembled
and the motor was loose,so i grabbed that.As i remember the
transmission pulley/clutch drum was perfectly shaped and
positiond to collect any leaked tranny oil and sling it out
to the clutch pads when running!
As i remember this washer had a kinda slow, but deep long
stroke agitation.
