I am not well informed on Maytags (that will change with continued association here I'm sure) but those machines are not shaded, right? I think the shading ended mid-70s. With Kenmore, I think the first monotone color was in 1976 models I believe. Oddly, I had one early 1983 Kenmore 70 in Avocado years ago. IIRC it was built in early Feb. of 1983. The last year that seemed to feature a lot of Avocado and Coffee in Kenmores was 1979. The 1980 machines favored Almond, in catalogs anyway, and only a few models seemed to be advertised in the full color spectrum. By the 1981 models, if you wanted brown or green you had one choice in a washer, and two in a dryer (a large cap, and a flat-back standard cap for those who couldn't accomodate the deep dryer). If the same holds true for Maytag, maybe there were some 1980 and later with the new console in Avocado? Gordon | ||

APPLIANCE COLORS
All US appliance makers stopped the shading of thier colored machines in 1976 the same year that almond was introduced. If you are looking for the best features and performace you wouldn't generally find it with MT washers & dryers. When I worked with MT in the late 1970s the MT sales people would always talk about thier very good performing dishwashers but always said all washers & dryers performed about the same because they had nothing to talk about in the way of better performance. Even when consumer reports would highly rate a A606 they would say it wasn't best at anything but wasn't real bad at anything either a very average booing machine. When I buy appliances and cars I always want top performance and styling and features I will often give up top reliability to get better performance this is just one reason way I wouldn't buy a Toyota reliable but booing and lackluster performance.

rude buzzers Older Maytags sounded an end of cycle Chime. LoL, Kenmore buzzers were not bad, and many has adjustable volume or could be turned off. Magic Chef had a buzzer capable of startling an adult. alr2903 | ||

Rude buzzers Has anyone ever customized their washer or dryer by replacing a rude buzzer with something more pleasing, like a chime? Or perhaps a synthesized voice announcing it is time to remove the laundry? | ||

Early dryers with wrinkle guard.
Would I be correct in guessing that the earliest common dryers with a wrinkle guard feature would be some of the higher end Kenmores?
For a reliable vintage washer, I'd vote Maytag A806. Decent, but not huge capacity, lots of lights, flexible features, and a good lint filter. A Lady Kenmore would be good too but somewhat less reliable and they have an automatic lint filter. (Don't get me wrong, I love my Kenmores and they have been running a long LONG time.) Here's some info RCD sent me sometime ago that should help with changes and their respective dates/models
"Automatic washer parts catalog No. 55210 (revised 1986) Models A806 - A806S This revision includes the following changes: 1. Revised lid switch and unbalance mechanism incorporated 11-13-67 beginning with DY serial number. 2. Permanent press cycle with cool-down incorporated 2-12-69 beginning with HD serial number. 3. Series "01" A. Revised bleach injection system and new top cover added 1-29-75 beginning with WD serial number. B. Front panel trim trim strip removed - WD serial number. C. Control panel - Sunglow color. D. New timer dial. 4. Discontinued shading of top covers beginning with WD serial. 5. Series "02" - New pressure switch - No tub light." And for colors: "The A806 washers produced before July, 1977 will have shaded front panels. These colors are Avocado, Harvest Gold and Coppertone. The A806 washers produced beginning July 1977 are different colors and do not have shaded front panels. These colors are Fresh Avocado, Harvest Wheat and Almond." There are also notations for agitation speed From the A106-A106S parts catalog: "Fast gears (63 OPM) used to increase agitation speed incorporated 11-20-67 beginning with DY serial number." | ||
