Hello -- new here. Didn't know there were fans / devotees of old / vintage washers & dryers.

We inherited the washer and dryer when we purchased our home from the original owner. Model number on the washer is LDA980. The home was built in 1975, so I assume from the looks of them the appliances are at least that old.

Even though everyone told us to dump the washer and dryer and get the new, super-modern ones, I refused -- why add more clutter to landfills when the washer and dryer worked perfectly well -- in fact, better than any of the new machines they sell in the stores today? Well, needless to say, after discovering this forum, I'm glad to know what I own is kind of a classic. =)

So after two years of use, I've encountered a problem. I find a big pool of water on the floor during the wash, and now this weekend, I discovered that the tub no longer drains water away to then spin the clothes. The clothes just sit there with a tub full of water. I'd hate to give my husband an excuse to finally toss the washer / dryer. Any advice on how to fix these problems?

LOVE this pair! My all-time favorite Whirlys!!

No drain is likely a pump problem. Or, I've seen the wig-wag pin for the agitate solenoid break, in which case it doesn't shift out of agitation, which also prevents drain (the pump's flapper valve that switches it between drain and recirculate for filtering during agitation is linked to the agitation cam bar). That can be observed by noting if it's agitating when the timer is set to a spin position.

Beautiful pair! You will never get the same quality when you buy a new set. I hope you can repair them.

They ARE beautiful! Completely clean inside and out, not a spot of rust anywhere. I guess the original owner and his wife either took really good care of their stuff or just hardly used them, OR things were just made well back then! I couldn't believe that after 30+ years the washer and dryer would work SO well.

I think the repair is beyond anything I could personally do myself because I have only very rudimentary knowledge of the parts and mechanisms. Whom would I call to diagnose / repair? I live in Los Angeles.

Replacing a pump is not difficult. The leaking issue may be related to the pump, or something different. Another consideration, the belt may be worn if it has never been replaced. Any established appliance service should be able to do the job. Tell them you have a belt-drive Whirlpool toploader. These were last produced in 1987 -- belt-drive machines in general, not your specific model.

Your machines are circa 1975-1976 as you thought. The top-of-line models for that year, the last ones with a fluorescent lighted console. Your dryer is the last one that was offered with a choice of tumble speeds. The previous series LAA had three tumble speeds, and three agitate speeds on the washer. The next series LFA after yours (shown below) had an electronic panel on the washer and full-panel mechanical pushbuttons on the dryer.

(the picture has been Photoshopped, they weren't available in that color)

That is a beautiful set!
Any reputable company who repairs appliances should be able to diagnose the problem, and repair the washer. It may be something simple, or a major repair. Either way, they should be repaired, and enjoyed for many more years.

Georgeous set. Yes, fixing them is the way to go, as you will not find anything today with the quality or the aesthetic beauty of the classics you have there.

Good luck,

1974-75 Whirlpool Imperial Mark 18 Washer....

@ lovepuppy:

I am with everyone else on this thread. You got to get these repaired. From the looks of the picture above, they look like quality machines, and I can tell you, they don't make them like that today. They really don't.

I'll let Gordon take a look at this thread and let's see what he says. He's a Whirlpool/Kenmore guy. If anyone will get to the bottom of your problem, it's him.

That's a beautiful set!!! Hold on to it.

It most likely needs a belt and pump. I would suggest that either an appliance repair company or someone who has done a belt change on a Wpl/Ken perform the operation.

If you go with an appliance repair company try to go after someone who has been in business for a while. Younger techs will look at that machine and tell you to toss it. And they probably won't know how to change the belt anyway.

By all means!!!

Save them..... I love that pair and they are wearing my favorite classic color too=) Like the guys above said you are better of to fix them eve if it costs $300.00 you will probably get another 10 + years out of them.
Another common leak problem is around the sediment trap. Wich not a hard fix is labor costly. But still IMHO its worth it. When my modern garbage(witch works pretty well) dies again Im going hunting for a set like these.
Good luck
Kenny.

This was a very special washer because, I believe, it was the first time WP allowed independent agitate and spin speed selections. They were usually built into the timer and controlled by the cycle selected.

Charles, this was the last belt-drive model offered with this flexible control arrangement, and the dryer with multiple tumble speeds. Whirlpool dropped back to two tumble and two agitate speeds on this model LDA-9800 and LDE-9800. Previous models had three tumble and agitate speeds.

The next year's LFA-9800 was the first electronic control model, and also brought in the Double-Duty "winged" Surgilator.

Charles, my parents had an LJA-3200 bought in January 1962, and LME-4600 dryer was bought a little later. It was replaced in June 1976 with an LDA-7800 (Supreme 80). Oh, I wanted a 9800 in the worse way! The matching LDE-7800 dryer replaced the 4600 a year later (NOS that I found at the local Whirlpool dealer, the LFA series had already come out).

Then the 7800 set was replaced in 1994 with a KitchenAid KAWE/KEYE-670 pair that they still have.

@ NMass -- I get it. My husband is the same way with cars, basketball teams, and computers.

@ DADo -- your wish is my command -- what parts of the dryer are considered the money shots? I will post pics when I get home later this evening.

While I do not share anyone's expertise, I do share an appreciation for quality and workmanship that just can't be found anywhere anymore these days. And tend to have nostalgia for the way things used to be. Plus I love the nifty retro designs of vintage stuff. My mom still has and uses her first rice cooker from Iran from 40 years ago because none of the newer ones she has purchased over the years work as well.

Don't hate us -- when we gutted our kitchen a year ago, the workers took and either dumped the appliances or stripped them; who knows. All the appliances were original from 75. The dishwasher (Maytag) and cooktop were immaculate and worked perfectly. The oven didn't work. I feel horrible from reading other threads on this board that someone may have wanted to give them a loving home... :(

Don't worry lovepuppy (can I use your real name?) not everyone remodeling their kitchen knows if the "old" appliances removed have any value to others. Frankly some don't even care "It's old, no one's going to want it, just put it in the dumpster".

Besides, as much as a lot of us here would love to save every old appliance out there, the reality is you can't save them all.

Dadoes: Yes the green WP washer in the photo you posted is a 1968. I know because it's mine. YAY!

Lovepuppy and Kevin -

I know that Charles was looking for my reply sooner than now, but I've been traveling this weekend and been getting myself back in gear here.

So, first, YES, what a great looking set, via phone pic or not. They look great.

Personally, I love these machines, and have been having my laundry washed by one model or another similar my entire life. I would not want anything else to be honest, I simply truly enjoy them.

As to this machine, my first thought would be to say the pump for sure is probably bad, and the belt. These are not bad or expensive items to replace just due strictly to age.

However, there are other things that could be causing a leak and a no or slow-drain condition. Kenmore81 is right in that the outlet hose to the manifold trap could be leaking. This is far more common on large capacity machines like yours than standard tup models which have a different outlet hose which seats better.

You could also have a leaking lint filter. If it is clogged and/or cracked, this could be your culprit.

There is a variety of good news with all this as the pump and belt are still out there available from Whirlpool. The outlet hose is not, but they can be found and I know Kevin has one as I directed him to buy one or two recently. Ok....I almost insisted.

The lint filter might be a tough beast (probably NLA), but I saw one on ebay last weekend. These were used by Whirpool only as Kenmore had their own design they liked. Whirlpool's filter is molded as part of the manifold trap, and sometimes shakes loose and makes the outlet hose leak.

If this were my machine and I wanted it to live on a good while yet, I would pull the tub and replace the centerpost grommet (Kevin is familiar) and the tub outlet hose. At the same time, I'd change the belt and the pump. I know Kevin has changed pumps, but a belt too?

This can be a bit of work, but there are folks, including me and Kevin, who'll help. It wouldn't be the first time I was on the phone with Kevin doing mobile washer repair consultations :-)

GOOD luck!

Gordon

AAAAHAHAHAHAAAA

It is very Brady Bunch -- in fact, we described our house as a Brady Bunch house before we remodeled it. The tiles in the master bath are the same color as the washer / dryer, as was the paint on all the doors. The owners were reaaaaaaally into goldenrod / yellow.

My mom's kitchen before she gutted it had appliances from the 50s -- including a very cool stainless steel oven. Oh well, I hope the parts from these guys were re-incarnated somehow and are living in new homes somewhere.

Dryer pics to follow...

If I may be so bold as to request:

- straight-on shots of the timers and of the auxiliary controls (each half of the console)
- dryer interior

They really are pristine, looks to be no wear or scuffing on the dryer drum.

I always liked the color shading around the buttons on this set.

Bob/Appnut, here's a Whirly dryer with Wrinkle Guard aka Finish Guard. Notice the extended Cool Down section at end of the Autodry cycle. I don't recall now if it runs a full 2-1/2 hrs (with a pulse-delay on the timer), the feature sticker doesn't say.

Thats a wonderful W&D pair you have I have been an authorized WP sales & service person for over 35 years I remember selling that model W&D pair. They have been lightly used over the years and I would try to keep them repaired and working for more years to come. I would not let a big factory service Co. work on these they will just condemn them. You need find a good independent service Co. who has been in business a good while who is willing to work on an older W&D, you may have Angies List in your area also look on the internet for your community list service to see who your neighbors are happy with. I had forgotten till saw the model # plate of your dryer but this was the last WP gas dryer to have the dual BTU gas burner it fires at 30,000 BTUs at the high heat setting making it one of the fastest clothes dryers ever made. The two speed tumble is also a very unique and useful feature to aid drying speed and reduce balling of sheets etc.I would never get rid of this dryer many of working parts of this dryer are the same as the dryers that WP is still using on thier current machines { motor ,belt ,rear drum rollers] a good repair person should be able to keep this going for decades. Email me if you need any pacific help with keeping them going. John.

On the "two speed dryer"... I will have to check these out, but on my 1968 WP Imperial Mark 12 set, the "speeds" on the dryer ONLY changes the airflow through the dryer, not the tumble speed.

Hi Kevin I sure the WPs will be in good hands when you get to see them call if you need any unusual parts. Your WP mark 12 does change the heat input when change the speed setting if its gas it changes the BTUs if its electric it has a dual heating element it runs @ 4600 or 5600 watts.

Those 'pools are spiffy. I really love that "finished" laundry room; I want to have one myself one day. I mean where the appliances are well integrated with cabinets and counters and even the water faucets are built in and have their own customized handles. Interesting that it doesn't even require the old "flush installation" feature on the machines to look good.

Two-speed drying when Whirlpool first introduced it in the 1960s affected airflow (by shifting the blower belt on a two-stage pulley, and then later an air damper when the blower went to direct-drive) and heat input, not tumbling.

Multiple tumble speeds came into play I think from 1972 (LX_) to 1976/77 (LD_) by shifting the drum belt on a cylindrical tapered pulley. As I mentioned earlier, it was initially three speeds. The LDA series dropped to two speeds, then the feature was eliminated.

It also wasn't always restricted to the TOL model. This Imperial 80 is likely circa 1972 or 1973.

I would go as far as to replace not only the pump and belt but the tub seal as well.I would also completely clean out the outer tub of any soap scum and lint deposits.I'd also replace the inlet hoses. Once the unit is ready,I would run a full cycle using straight Clorox Bleach and a full tub of hot water.Bar keeper's Friend works great on the porcelain and painted surfaces to get all the dirt and grime.Windex is great for all the dials, chrome buttons and control panel backgrounds.Great set!!

Thanks everyone -- you all are truly wonderful!

I think I know why the pair are in such great condition -- the owners were already in their 50s when they built our home. I'm sure the set did not get as much use as it would have had with a bunch of kids running around and laundry going all the time. Then the wife passed away about 10 years before we bought the home, so yes, I suppose the machines just weren't used all that often.

Oh -- I called the number on the sticker -- it goes straight to Whirlpool customer service!

Here is a partial re-post of the email I sent to Kevin a few minutes ago. I don't know if the issue is more complicated than previously thought, or if a button is just stuck somewhere, or what. But I love this set and do plan on keeping it as long as I can.

So I am doing a test run with a pile of dirty rags so I can answer your question re: the wooo / whirr. I am watching to see exactly how the cycle goes down. Here are the results:

1 -- After she filled with water, I noticed that she never began agitating. All you can hear is a loud "buzz" (sounds like reaaaaallly loud fluorescent lights) but no action. I played with the buttons and once I pushed "low" for agitate it started going. If I pressed "high" it would stop.

2 -- Same for drain / spin -- if "spin" is on "high" -- no go, would just sit with the tub full of water; if moved to "low, then it would spin and drain.

3 -- A bit of good news -- no puddle of water all over the floor this time -- is Madge just mad at Harold and acting tempermental? She used to be so mellow....

if you noticed the lights dim a bit when the washer buzzed but
failed to run on high speed, there might be a problem with the
motor-starting switch problems,a bad connection,etc.
even if the motor is bad(very, very rare)they are very easy to
obtain and replace with very wide year coverage.

Extra nice

That is an absolutely beautiful Whirlpool set. I remember seeing these on the sales floor at Swallen's on US 50. They were Cincinnati's largest Whirlpool dealer - I'm sure Pete (Rollermatic) will remember that store. It's been out of business about 14 years now. Hope the washer won't be too much problem to fix.

CLEANING UP WASHERS

You should never run undulated bleach through any washer or dishwasher it is very corrosive to metal and ruins rubber parts as well. Always dilute per instructions and never leave in a machine more than 30 minutes and than rinse it all out of the machine.

Wow! Unbelievably beautiful! They literally look like they came off the showroom floor! Even the removable informational stickers were left intact. I wish you all the best of luck in getting the washer running again. With all the knowledge and expertise on here, I'm sure you will.

Glad to hear you have an appreciation for the quality and durability of yesteryear :-)!

I think we'll have that washer up and running soon. Kevin is a smart, mechanically minded guy and what he isn't able to do on his own we can help him get done I'm sure!

As to the dryer, I can't get over the mint shape of the drum. It sure looks unused! My mom's 1983 Kenmore dryer and my 1978 Kenmore dryer have a lot of finish worn off, expecially on the rear bulkhead. Just look at that one - it's perfect! My '78 model is so well used that on the lower left, there is almost no paint. I should photograph that and show it here for comparison.

Have a good day everyone!

Gordon

Natalie... You are so lucky to have this beautiful Whirlpool set. Definitely top of the line for it's time and it is so rare to find a set of this age so well taken care of. I'm sure Kevin and Matthew will have them running like new again after their visit. Best of luck and welcome to the vintage appliance appreciation community!

Hello Lovepuppy--your name is irresistible!

mickeyd's profile picture
and your machines look brand new. It's great to see 35 year-old TOL Whirlpools looking like they just came from the factory.

I have the less gifted sibling of your machine.

Here are some real ugly dickling shots especially when juxtposed with your glorious laundry room. For some unknown reasons, this club just loves mid 70's Golden Whirlpools.

Enjoy and welcome to Washer Love

You motivated me to master the new Search-a-lator and find this thread from 4 years ago. Thank you.

Wrong posting link above, sorry!

Lovepuppy, you have a wonderful set, like everyone said, keep them!
The newer stuff may look nice but will not last as long as these. I just replaced my refrigerator last month and it was only 7 years old, how's that for quality?

This set reminds me of the Harvest Gold LDA-5800 set my father's cousin had. She bought them in late 1976 after remodeling her kitchen along with a HG refrigerator and stove; talk about a 70s kitchen. I remember they replaced a 1962 600 Kenmore set which they gave to a friend. I don't know how long she had the Whirlpools, but they sure did look good together.

The hubby's not only on board now...

...but is running with it. He suggested last night that we find some vintage Tide or other laundry-themed ads, frame them, and hang them up in the laundry room. Thanks everyone, for convincing him that Harold and Madge are worth saving!

How fun that you have named your machines. The framed ads is a great idea but how about some real vintage detergents, softeners, etc for display!

I know that I'm in the minority here but, I've never been a big Whirlpool fan. I prefer my Maytag's, and Speed Queen's. But I have to admire the condition of this set. I'm happy to read that your hubby is getting into the vintage machine "craze" too. Once this set is repaired, it will easily last another 30+ years with a little TLC.
