Heres one for 'ya--------------the new tub "Nut & Seal" assembly for my '55 Unimatic (Part#5876864) contains a rather large (1 1/2 in dia. x 1 in long) steel spacer. There is a small "tang" on the outer edge of both ends of the "spacer". The instructions included in the box DO NOT SHOW THIS "SPACER" but DO SHOW the other parts. A mention is made of a "spacer", but it refers you to "step 4". Now, "step 4" makes NO MENTION of a "spacer" much less where it would be installed!!!! Keep in mind, when this mechanism was broken down for reoperation, there was no spacer such as this on it!

Now to thicken the plot------The "Repairmaster" for "Unimatic" has a photo on page 47, figure #73 that shows the "spacer" (E). However, IT DOES NOT SHOW OR EXPLAIN WHERE THE SPACER GOES!

I will attempt to attach a link to the photo of the spacer I took, but as this is a "first" for me be patient----it might not work!

Any ideas on where in the assembly this "spacer" goes?

Photo download----

Sorry folks, the download seemed to "take" when I was creating the thread, but somehow failed to attach to it. I used the "Upload JPEG or GIF Format Picture to share" box, but must be doing something incorrectly.

Perhaps the file is too big?

Hi Steve, first of all the picture you sent me in my email is only 49K so it is plenty small and easily uploaded as you can see...

That spacer slips over the spin shaft first, before you screw the seal assembly onto the top of the mechanism. The bushing will sit right on top of that spacer.

Please use this thread to practice loading some pictures, it really is very easy. You should see the picture in your preview if it is going to load.

By the way did you replace the spin bearing that is located at the top of the mechanism housing? There is nothing worse than getting everything back together and finding out that it works perfectly except for a loud screaming spin cycle. I speak from experience with that :)

Now that I think about it for a second...

Be advised Steve, one thing I just thought of is that extra spacer does not come with that seal kit and someone might have put it in the box by accident. There is a chance that the spacer is already installed on the spin shaft. The spacer should sit right on top of the spin bearing. If there already is one in there don't use two, that will make for a very bad seal and the tub will be too high.

Spin bearing replaced----no spacer included. "Tech-Talk" chart of parts was equally confusing as it shows the spacer as having TWO tangs on the end----mine has only one. I realized that with only one tang the only way for it to go was on BEFORE the nut but figured I would get other opinions especially as the wall-chart of the mechanism appears to place the spacer on TOP of the nut and seal! As I said, when I tore down the tranny for reoperation, there was no such spacer!

And by the way, as many people already know, I am not very computer saavy, although I try my best. Sorry if I have been sooooooo much trouble for someone who must already be inundated with hundreds of thousands of daily requests for their humble expert advice.

Upon installation of the spacer it was interesting to observe that the "tangs" in the spacer had no obvious purpose as they did not fit anything including the ring on the nut and seal assenbly! (Just in case someone else tries to make sense of it all)! If I had only blindly followed step 3 of the installation instructions I would have saved myself a lot of worry, but live and learn. In the end I found more than FIVE different or conflicting bits of information on this spacer.

Those gaps or tangs are to allow the oil to flow through those parts when it's pumped up through the mechanism parts to the top spin bearing.

Good to hear you got everthing figured out!
