Am I correct in understanding that the models with the "D" shaped top opening are the belt drive models? If so, here is a 2nd pair of Whirlpools in the Atlanta area. Same price as the others, but in better condition.

Yes, the D-shaped tub rings are the belt-drives.

Direct drives have a D-shaped lid opening, but a round tub ring (and the lid opening is a softer, less pronounced D).
