I finally got that brand new Speed Queen top-loading AWN412 washer for my new building today! A few questions; why was it when I first pumped out the water on the Spin cycle, the washer made a popping sound each time the tub shook before it come up to speed-it only did this once, it hasn't done it any more since. I stuck a thick folded up piece of paper into the lid switch mechanism, as was instructed to do on this web site-will that void the warranty? Is there supposed to be a soak period on the Handwash/Delicate cycle in between Normal and Light increments on the timer?

Did you "prime" the pump? My Speed Queen stated that you need to add at least 1 quart of water to the wash basket before the first use. I have no idea if that would make a difference...just a thought. Of course, get it good and level, etc.

Mine did not make the sounds that you mentioned, or shake. I have never read any 'conditions of warranty/reasons for void' in the SQ documentation...I would read it again to make sure.

As far as the cycle settings, I don't know of any 'soak' feature...it will pause for about 20 seconds before draining to allow sedement to settle to the bottom of the wash basket.

I hope that helps...congrats on your new washer...and welcome to the Speed Queen club. :) Don't be suprised if you find yourself washing everything in the house and enjoying all those old school sounds and classic agitator action! :)

Hmmmm...perhaps the 'soak' is the intermittent action of the agitator? My SQ 542 uses intermittent agitation on those cycles. I'll have to check the cycle chart for you in you are interested.

Oh, and you will probably here an occassional metallic 'chirping sound' during agitation--that's the all metal transmission.

the popping sound was the shipping strap that broke.its supposed to do that only on the very first spin, also you have a one speed machine so on delicate the washer will pause and then agitate, that would explain the soak.

it was more like a knocking sound

Correction: I remember when I first run a little water in it for the first time, advanced it to Spin, it wasn't a popping sound, it was a knocking sound, each time the tub shook, before it come up to speed-also, the plastic lid hinge inserts, the lid rubs against the left insert, making some resistance just before the lid is fully opened-is it supposed to do that? My washer is not a single speed, it is a two-speed AWN412-and it does have the intermittent agitation on the gentle cycle.

the lid is supposed to do that to keep the lid from falling closed so easy when its in the open posision

unlocking tub

Something else I was curious about-on my Mom's 1987 Raytheon-built Speed Queen washer when she first got it, there was a note in it that said the tub was in the locked position-to turn it counter-clockwise until it turns freely. Are the new Alliance-built units the same way-will it damage the unit if you don't do this procedure before you use it for the first time?

No, do you have a copy of your installation instuctions, and use & care guide? These books are very helping in awnsering most of your questions, like someone once told me, it's a washing machine, your gonna hear noise. I guess he was right I own the same machines as DanMan. Good Luck.

I didn't fill and advance to spin. I filled with a bucket of water, then ran a complete cycle. Have you heard any of the noises since?

noises

I haven't heard the knocking noise since then, but it is starting to make a slight noise like metal rubbing against styrofoam tapping and it does it when the tub gains speed-and it seems to stop when it's at the full 710 RPM. I noticed when I shift the tub around, it also makes that styrofoam rubbing noise.

Move the tub around...like pushing it by hand? There is a piece of styrofoam on the left side of the tub that keeps it from making a noise when heavily loaded or off balance. Search my pics in the post "Pictures of a naked Speed Queen" for a view of the styrofoam.

Did you also install the rubber 'caps' on the feet? (pic in your owner's manual) There are hard rubber caps that go on the feet that keep the washer from vibrating...they work extremely well...might want to make sure that the installers installed them...an easily overlooked thing.

stains on a few articles of clothing

I tend to pour liquid detergent directly on the clothes before I start the washer filling with water-will this leave stain blotches on clothes-I was actually scared there for a while that the transmission was getting grease onto the clothes! But there was no traces of transmission grease anywhere in the tub, and no grease ring in the tub, or a greasy feel to the tub-maybe just imagining things! It wasn't widespread stains, just on two or three articles of clothing-will liquid detergent do this?

Possibly. Speed Queen recommends to add detergent first, then clothes and immediately start filling the tub (from lid instructions). Personally I never pour directly on clothes.

Might also be fab softener...be sure you are diluting!

transmission grease

If it was the transmission leaking grease onto the clothes, what would the stains look like when you took the clothes out of the dryer + what's the difference between a transmission grease stain and a liquid detergent stain on the clothes?

my new Speed Queen washer sounds

My new Speed Queen washer sounds like an older helical-drive, long stroke Maytag washer with that classic Maytag-like groan in the transmission.

I always let our washer fill and start agitating before I add the detergent. This way the clothes are nice and wet when the detergent hits them.

old skool..

the new speed queens might be the last "old skool"T/L washers
left after the DDS go out of production.
I have two 1984 speed queens and other than the motor and pump
mounting, the new ones appear to retain much of the 1981 design
including the transmission and outer tub-nearly 30yrs old!

it wasn't transmission grease

We found out it wasn't transmission grease or detergent stain, it was either WD-40 or food grease stain on an article of clothing-and I've run it since, not a trace of transmission grease ANYWHERE in the washer or clothes!

almost got off-balance a few days ago

I was washing a load of towels in it a few days ago, medium water level, and on the final spin-drain, the tub shook bigger and bigger-almost to the point of banging against the sides of the cabinet, I shut it off, and sure enough, the load wasn't truely on both sides of the tub-I redistributed the load, and re-started the washer, and it spun as usual.
