I just purchased the new Maytag Neptune. Eight years ago I was in the market for a machine and was torn between the Frigidaire front loader and the Maytag Neptune. The Frigidaire won out based on price, the glass in the door and the superior Consumer Reports review.

Now the Frigidaire has the bearing go out so I have opted for the new Maytag Neptune (made by Samsung). Postives included the superior size (3.81), the glass in the door, and the built in water heater to maintain the water temp. I also like the look and the extra height (15") of the optional drawer pedestal.

Machine has not been out long. I was curious if any of you have actually used the machine yet? Once I get mine, I will post back with input, but for now I was curious to hear from anyone who already has it.

Informationally, Maytag is coming out with a machine with more features (direct drive motor, sanitary function, 1200 RPM rather than 1100 RPM and superior sound insulation). The stores I went to had information on the machine, but it does not appear it will be available until October.

I was also curious as to how large is Samsung in the production of front loaders? Are they as large as LG? I understand they are both South Korean companies. I would greatly appreciate any information anyone can provide!

Thanks!

Re: New Maytag/Samsung MAH 8700 Models:

I just was talking to a Maytag Store Salesman Friend of mine, named Rick last weekend and he told me that these Maytag/Samsung made Neptune Models were not going to be Sold at this time, including both 3.81-cu/ft Models. There is a possible Re-Call on them, due to the fact that evidentally Maytag didn't check them out as they should have. They are going right into the High Speed Spin, without Re-Balancing/Re-Distributing the Loads and the Cabinets are Vibrating terribly. He didn't know what for sure was going to happen, as far as to continue Sales, after seeing why they aren't going into the Spin as they should, with Re-Balancing/Re-Distributing the Loads and "Ramping" Speed, before getting into the High Speed Spinning.

I would suggest Frontloadfan, that you look into this, before either taking posession of your new Washer, or making sure that if for some reason other areas other then here in Northern Calif, of Sacramento, Roseville and Rocklin areas have already taken care of this and the Models are all right.

I'm sorry about this news and being delayed at Posting it, but when I saw your Thread Posting, I felt the need to for sure make notice about this problem, so you won't get a "Lemon" Washer and without not checking out for sure about this, to see if your area, has as mentioned already taken care of this problem.

The Compact Front-Load Models seem to be all right, according to my Salesman Friend Rick, it is just the Larger Capacity Models that are causing the Spin and Cabinet Vibrating problems.

Good Luck with your research about this and I hope that things work out all right for you, with this Washer.

Peace, Steve

The Neptunes ARE available. The direct drive models were recalled untill further notice due to control board failier problems and weren't available long enough to have that many sold. The belt drive model works great and 100 rpms of spinning are not enough to make a final spin that different. My LG Tromm spins 1100 rpms and my KitchenAid Ensemble spins 1200 rpms. The drying times are the same with each one.

Yes, the MAH8700 'tunes are defintiely available. My local RDC (regional distribution center) has 2072 available for dealers.

Quote "There is a possible Re-Call on them, due to the fact that evidentally Maytag didn't check them out as they should have." Wow. What a statement. That's the problem with the internet.

Also quote "I'm sorry about this news and being delayed at Posting it, but when I saw your Thread Posting, I felt the need to for sure make notice about this problem, so you won't get a "Lemon" Washer and without not checking out for sure about this, to see if your area, has as mentioned already taken care of this problem. " I've never received ANYTHING from Maytag indicating this problem. I just rechecked my dealer servicer page & there are no tech bulletins on this washer.

TeddyBear, I'm not trying to be a jerk. But let's stick to facts. There is no recall on the MAH8700 & a salesman at a store would not be the first to know anyway.

I have the 2004 version Neptune front loader and really like it. It is very smooth at high speed spins and very easy to operate. I had bought the Kenmore HE3t front loader thinking bigger and faster was better. Then Kenmore shook the entire house and I could never use the high speed spin. I also found it to be too big. My laundry loads were average size. You really have to fill up the large drum for good turn over of the clothes. I found myself waiting 2 weeks to do laundry before I had "full" loads. Larger and faster is not always better. I ended up taking the Kenmore back to Sears and getting the Maytag Neptune.

The new Maysung looked mighty regal and nice when last seen (by me) yesterday!

I would certainly consider one..

But only 8 years on bearings of a Frid-Ge-More?

Don't make me go buy a T/L Speed Queen or a May-Queen SS tub (Maytag with Amana Engineering.)

UGH... Do I have to get Staber (which some say is a POS) to get a F/L that will last?

(PS Jon MIELE is out of the quesiton, price too big, size/capacity too small.)

Machine and Review Both Delayed By One Week!

Hi!

I stated this thread earlier this week, anticipating that I would be posting a review today, which was the delivery date for my Maytag (Samsung) machine.

I was told by Lowe's to be by my phone between 7:00 AM and 9:00 AM this morning and to have my old machine (front loader, Frigidaire) all unhooked. I waited by my phone and I disconnected the old machine, pulled it out and scubbed underneath. I then waited and waited until 9:15 AM I called to see why they hadn't called to give me my 4 hour window. Funny thing, they told me, I had purchased my machine with the pedestal and when the delivery people when to load my machine, the pedestal hadn't been attached. The delivery people are not allowed to attach the pedestals, so the truck was leaving without my machine.

The manager then offered to rebate my account $100 and I could come in and they would loan me a truck so I could do my own delivery and installation! The reality, I knew, is that $70 of that amount would be the delivery fee and I was under a special rebate program to have it rebated anyway, so that amounted to only $30. I told him No thank you. He said he would call back when he would see what he could do for me.

He called back 30 minutes later with more bad news, there were no pedestals in stock at all! He then offered to deduct the delivery fee and deliver as soon as possible.

I then countered with to deliver it a week from today (first day I am available for a delivery) and credit my account $100. He said he would do so.

I can't say I am delighted, but $100 is better than nothing. Must close off now and head for the laundrymat! Stay tuned a week from today for the review!

Blah!

Rich,
Well, I thought these things only happend to me. Always, if I am waiting for something to be delivered, you can bet that it won't show up when it should. I expect it now, and it is not such a let down.
Keep us posted about your new machine, and you like it.
Brent

Initial Review of Maytag Neptune (Samsung)

OK, here goes, here is my initial review of the new Maytag Neptune (Samsung).

First of all this is the Model 8700, not the top of line 8900. As I understand the 8900 has direct drive and the sanitize function whereas the 8700 does not. Also realize that this is not the same Maytag Neptune front loader that has been around since 1997. That model had a regular door (no glass) and earned a bad rep. with recalls and finally a class action lawsuit. This is the new Maytag Neptune built with the help of Samsung and it does include the glass in the door. It dwarfs the old Neptune (3.81 vs. 3.3)in size.

This must be a initial review in that there does seem to be an issue with this machine. Until I can ascertain if my noise issue is part of the basic machine operation or is a defect that can be corrected, I must make this a initial review.

First, regarding the noise issue, this machine runs very quite most of the time. Basic wash and spin moves are very quite. My old Frigidare FL always had a loud electronic hum as it washed. With this machine there is very little noise most of the time. Even the swoosh of the water is very minimal compared to the Frig FL as the water level seems to be much lower.

The problem is when the machine pumps out the water. The powerful pump makes a loud noise which you expect. What you would not expect is for the machine to have a rattling sound like something is loose. I really can't believe that this is a designed noise. I think maybe something needs to be adjusted. Only time (and a service call) will tell. I will be calling Lowels today, but I will not be available to receive a service call until late next week. Any case, after I have my service call, I will post back and state the outcome.

Now, lets get down to the operation of the machine. Overall, I am very pleased with the performance of the machine. It is electronic control and at first it seems really complicated, but it actually turns out to be a simple operating machine. To start out, you select from one of the cycles below. As you switch from cycle to cycle with a dial, a different countdown time is displayed. The machine has a memory in that if the last time you used a cycle you used certain options, the machine will set to those options when you dial to that cycle. Below are the cylces and the "basic - no options" run times:

Super Wash 1:00
Normal 51
White 42
Wrinkle Contrl 40
Color 51
Delicate 40
Hand Wash 42
Quick Wash 29

Now there are the options and soil levels. Each option and soil level adds a given number of minutes to the times above.

Heavy Soil Level 10
Medium Soil Level 5
Light Soil Level Time is unchanged
Prewash 25
Extra Rinse 13
Extended Spin 2

Aside from all the above, the machine offers two stand-alone options:

Rinse & Spin 15
Spin Only 9

Regarding water temps (ATC reps. temp contol, when the internal heating element will engage):

Hot/Cold
ATC Warm/Warm
ATC Warm/Cold
ATC Cold/Cold
Cold/Cold

After having used the machines for three loads, what is my impression?

Compared to my Frig. FL, this machine uses much less water. With the Frig FL, you could see maybe 3 inches of water in the bottom of the tub, with this machine you can hardly see water in the bottom.

My Frig. had a constant battle with suds, even using the HE detergent. It got to be where I used a fraction of what they called for and the suds still did seem to come out. Somehow this machine does one great job in that regard. With the Frig. you can smell the detergent in the clothes taking them out of the machine. With this machine, there is no detergent smell at all.

My Frig. would fast spin and then stop. You would then need to wait a full 60 seconds while the machine would just sit there while you waited to get your clothes out. With the Neptune, it doesn't just sit there. It finishes the fast spin and there is 2 minutes left on the time. It uses that time to fluff up your clothes. You put the clothes in and the tub is full. As the machine washes the clothes, the tub appears to be less that half full. Then at the end after it fluffs your clothes, the tub is full again!

Another nice function is that when you use the prewash. With the Frig. you would turn the dial to prewash and it would run it and then you were required to go ahead and set it to the regular cycle. With the Neptune, you push the button for the prewash and it is seamless with the regular wash. That is way more convenient.

The machine offers a delay function and has a really nice chime that can be set for high, low and off.

Overall, machine seems to be very sturdy. You fill it up with loads my Frig. couldn't start to hold and the machine doesn't seem to strain at all with all that weight. It advertises itself as the largest capacity front loader you can buy (3.81), but if you go to Sears, they will tell you that Kenmore FL can actually handle a larger load. It appears to me that the Kenmore/Whirlpool/Maytag may all be identical in tub sizes with the Maytag getting the extra .01 with the size of the paddles?

In conclusion, I am very happy with the performance of this machine. My only concern is the excessive rattle sound when it expells the water. I have the pedestal, but the sound doesn't seem to be coming from it, but rather from within the machine itself. Once I have had a service call, I will post back. If it turns out the rattle is "normal", I certainly couln't recommend this machine for anyone who needed to have it within a kitchen or other living space. I have a landry room with a closing door, so it is not that hugh of an issue for me (although if it is something that can be corrrected, I do want it corrected). Another caution, this machine is the same width as a standard washer, but it is several inches deeper. If you have clearance issues, you will certainly want to measure carefully before getting this (or any of the other Mega machines).

Update to Problem with Machine

I just wanted to update and let everyone know that I had my service call and machine is now operating OK.

Maytag repairman arrived this am. He started by having machine do the "spin" function. Machine spinned flawlessly. I said to him: "I don't see any water in the machine". He responded that with the spin function it didn't put any water in the machine, it only spinned. I told him the rattle always seemed to be centered around machine pumping out water.

He then had me round up as many towels as I could find. Then when the machine started to pump out the water, the rattle started! I was really thinking the problem was with a missing bolt based on all the internet postings, but instead, the repairman figured out, the pump was rattling against a metal plate.

He went out to his van and came back with a thin strofoam material. He used this material to create a cushion on the plate so that the pump would be buffered from direct contact with the metal plate.

So far, so good!
