When I first heard our own webmaster Robert was going to have a Wash-In, I KNEW I just HAD to go! I mentioned it to my friend Joe (Catalystboy) and he wanted to go too. So planned it out and decided to drive from Los Angeles to MInneapolis. Here we are in the car on our way....

What... you don't believe we drove?

revvinkevin's profile picture

OK you non-believers... here is the proof! The car with California plates parked @ the Mall of America! (it's in Minneapolis, look it up)

So you see? We drove ALL the way from LA!

Now come on, would I lie to you??

OK... OK... FINE!

revvinkevin's profile picture

OK... yes you got me... we flew to Minneapolis (And BOY are my arms tired! LOL).

Actually I laughed when I saw the rental car company gave me a car with California plates! Great joke though... yes? LOL

OK... so we arrive Friday afternoon and head to Roberts house. After getting a preview of what there was to watch and play with the next day, we all head off to dinner together at a nice little restaurant with great food. It was really great getting to spend time with Robert, Fred, Jon, Terry, Ben, Cory, Tanya and the others! (I can't remember everyones names, SORRY!)

There is a Spam, yes you read that right, a Spam museum in Austin, MN so we drive down there to check it out!

Surprisingly it was actually interesting (at least to Joe & I anyway). They had the entire history of Spam and how it came to be, plus of lots of other stuff.

These ads are from the 1930's (right) and the 1940's (left).

I grab some shots of the basement while the grabbing is good!

The smaller area with 4 Frigidaires, the Bendix Duo-Matic at the end, the Bendix rubber tub across from it next to the Maytag Wringer with the clear demo tub. There are also 2 early GE Filter Flo's and behind the cameras view, a Hotpoint, the Wizard (aka the Pig), a Wards Signature, an Easy automatic and the beautiful, very early Maytag 806.

Too late.... to get an "empty room" shot...

So I asked everyone to come in for a a group photo!

People came from far and wide to attend this Wash-In! I'm pretty sure about 40 people from all over the country!

We had a special guest visit too! Jim (may32) brought his Suzy Homemaker washer and it ended up visiting with Robert's baby Suzy. Thanks so much for bringing it Jim!

I had one of these (the larger one) when I was younger. I of course wish I had it how!

As the evening wares on... and after doing multiple loads of laundry in every washer in the basement... we start drying things....

This is a shot of the heating element in Philco Automagic dryer... this was really something to see! The white towels being dried actually looked orange with the room lights off!

The end of the night.......

revvinkevin's profile picture

Well here we are at the end of the night. Every washer had at least 2 loads run thru them and a few machines probably more! Cloths are piled all over... some folded, some not.

Joe and I arrived at the Wash-In about 4 PM Saturday afternoon and finally left at 2:45 am Sunday morning. Boy was I exhausted... BUT was it WORTH IT! OMG this was SO much fun and I am so glad that I made the trip!

Robert, thank you so much for hosting this event and inviting everyone into your home! I very much enjoyed being able to see, touch and hear all of your machines in person, what an awesome experience! It was also really great to finally meet you, Fred and others from the site and to be able to put faces to the names.

And now the rest of the (boring?) trip....

revvinkevin's profile picture

Sunday morning (barely) after waking up just before 11... we head off to the Mall of America to check it out. I have to say it'd really something!

Aside from the usual 'mall shopping experience" there is also an underground aquarium (IN A SHOPPING MALL???)

I was interested in the "side trip" photos, too.

I never knew that Burns & Allen advertised Spam. Learn something new every day. I wonder if they, themselves, actually ever ate Spam. (Or used other products they advertised, like Carnation evaporated milk or drank Maxwell House, for that matter!)

Where are they?
LOL!

It was so neat to talk to you while you were in the mall. The conversation moving along with the occasional pause to let a roller coaster scream by! WOW! I'm just going to have to make it next year and maybe allow an extra day or two for the surrounding things to see! Who knows, maybe you can pick me up in Nevada when you drive by on your way next year...

OK Drew... don't pout now!

I will be posting more photos later today... and yes of the see-thru wringer too. When posting this thread last night I was running out of time and for some reason (delirious from being so tired?) I didn't want to bore everyone with too many photos (it was very late and I was really tired).

I believe I have more video then stills of the wringer and other machines, but that will probably take me a week or so before I can get to it.

Thank you everyone! I really enjoyed every aspect of the wash-in... the people, the machines, the food, the machines, the house, the machines, the vacuums and the machines! LOL

So stay tuned!

Kevin

The towels in the Maytag wringer were nothing more than cheesecloth at the end of the night. The machine just ran and ran for 11 hours...

We were talking about the Westinghouse tangling when someone said that the Westy tangles almost as bad as a Frigidaire. That was when I channeled Robert and said, "Frigidaires don't tangle!"

Thanks for the wonderful pics, Kevin! Thanks again to Robert and Fred!

Pilot Knob: I have a friend who works on Pilot Knob road in Eagan. It is a strange name, isn't it? Being a big Ramones fan, I've always thought it was cool that there's a Cretin High School in St. Paul. (Although I believe it's now known as Cretin-Durham Hall High School)

Wow! Looks like all attending the wash-in had a super time. Wish I could have been there to meet everyone, and see all the machines. Hope I can go to one sometime in the near future.

That wringer is so COOL! Even though Robert had so many machines to play... Eerrrmmm... Investigate with, I would have spent a fair amount of time with the wringer. Now I REALLY want one!

Thanks again for all the pictures, Kevin. It really helps offset the disappointnent of not being able to attend this time. By golly, if it happens next year, I'm gonna find a way!

RCD

btw... Your first picture of you both in the car is really giving me a Blues Brothers flashback! LOL!

Robert & Freds' Wash-In

Simply (or maybe not so simply) MARVELOUS!!!!!

It was like becoming mesmerized viewing all the FANTASTIC pics, and there towards the end; I thought I must be dreaming!

What GREAT editing Kevin!! While the captions & Pics are OVER the TOP, I know they can't be compared to being THERE!

And what GRACIOUS hosts Fred & Robert are. Those "Suzy Homemakers" took be back a ways too!

BTW, those Suzy Homemakers looked like they were sitting on top of a LADY KENMORE! Where was that in the mix??? Haven't seen it in any other pic before!? AWWWWW, couldn't you have put that in the back of the Chevrolet that you saw the USA in as a CONSOLATION PRIZE for me not being there? (ducks & runs)...

You really had me believing that you DID drive there for a Moment; such a tease! And if you did, was it equiped with On Star to help you navigate??? (REALLY DUCKING & RUNNING)LoL

Yes the East coast is going to have their own washerama experience.... but they'll miss out on MY collection as I'm on the West coast (California).

Miraculous

These machines are the ones I dreamed over in department stores and catalogs as a child, We had no money, no running water and no hope of ever owning something so incredible. To go back to a time when I saw each of these machines for the first time and then reflect on the present is a journey of escape, success and fulfillment. Robert, Greg, Drew, Kevin, Jetcone, Lighted Controls, Gyrafoam and so many others who restore, display and operate their collections for all of us to share may never know how deeply touched I am with the enormity of overcoming limitations and finding a sense of belonging. Fun?, of course, Amazing? without a doubt? Memorial Wall? it is being able to revisit the past, respect the sacrifices and exalt in the victory. Thank you to those who choose to spend time, money, expertise and gifts with us all. It is so much more than a sudscake.

Fred is now on the Segerist hot seat for snagging it and I L

Not anymore...

I like to sleep with a fan running, so naturally, the Dyson is now the one that sits in the corner and *ahem* blows all night.

Anyways, I woke up this morning, got ready for work, and went back to kiss Robert goodbye before I headed to the salt mines -- I asked him "should I leave the Dyson running?"

His somewhat unconscious reply was "yes."

Woo hoo!

Kevin, you had to have taken more pictures than these from what someone indicated. More if they exist please. And identify who all the people are, some are familiar and some aren't. Thanks!! Bob
