If I remove the belts the long shaft to the agitator will fall out. Is there a set screw that holds the shaft in place? |

I am following thread 25520 and now I am having trouble removing the plastic agitator. There is a small hole in the base of the agitator. How do I remove agitator to get to the shaft and possible set screw? |

so if you take the belts off the big pulley in the center the pulley and shaft fall out?-if so the drive gear for the tranny may have come off? |

If the center shaft of the transmission is falling out, you probably sheared the pin in the fiber pinion gear that prevents the screw from backing out, causing the center shaft to fall out (and the fiber pinion and clutch washers rambling around inside the transmission). You may have only sheared the fiber pinion gear if the center shaft only drops down a couple of inches and won't come all of the way out. Either way, it requires a full tear-down and rebuild, including the transmission.

The orbital transmissions had problems with the shaft coming loose and they won't spin when this happens. !st question how old is this washer. If its under 10 years old you can get a free transmission from MT now WP. If its an orbital trans 1991 on the repair isn't always to bad but maybe still more involved than you might want to get into. If it has the earlier style trans the screw on the top of the agitator shaft may have broken, this was a very common problem with the first helical drive machines in the late 1950s. In any event you have a major repair on your hands Good Luck.
