Just watched the television program Eye on the Bay in San Francisco (KPIX-5). Tonight's topic was on unusual collectors. A person named Dan who's a automatic washer collector was featured. He was anonymous because he felt collecting washers would result in being laughed at if found out. He had mint condition Maytags, and a 1963 Frigidaire Custom Imperial washer with a Jet-Cone agitator. I was wondering if he is someone from the club. I was contacted by the producer of the show but refused to respond. He was followed on the program by someone who collects vaccuum cleaners in the Bay Area. Hope they rerun this segment again.

We would never laugh at you, Dan! Come out of the laundry closet ;-)

Excellent story - your collection looks terrific, those lights make a very bold picture!

LOL!!

I work at corporate headquarters of a software company where there are 1600+ people (800+ per building). Didn't feel like explaining my hobby 2000+ times over.

A big thanks goes out to Revinkevin for explaining the 120v wiring process for the dryers. Another big thanks to RCD for letting me raid his drum full of cut Maytag cords!

I posted something over in Super about this, but it's getting more play over here.

Dan, I can relate to your wish to remain anonymous.

When I first saw the vacuuming piece, I thought maybe the producer had done some more digging and found the vacuum community more willing to do a segment. But then I saw the Maytags and I knew he had paid you a visit.

I think that over all, they did a good job of respecting the collectors and didn't put an overly quirky slant on things.

How did the producer find you Dan? I have not been bashful about my washers at work, in fact I sold ten or twelve to co-workers in the 90s. I even mention them in meetings, lol.

I showed the video to one of my staff - she wants me to do the same thing here! I don't want to be on Charlotte TV!

I was contacted by Dave Stoelk, producer/correspondent of the show back in December 2, 2009. Knowing how quirky this man was, I did not respond. Just happened I attended a fundraising luncheon a few days earlier for a major non profit organization in San Francisco and someone I knew asked whether my email address had something to do with laundries. I said it's related to washing machines and further explained that I collect vintage automatic washers and there were others in the Bay Area and the rest of the world. I have an inkling that Dave and this person must have connected somehow about people collecting washers which lead to him contacting me.

Dave Stoelk contacted me back on 12/8. As I recall, Robert had provided him with email addresses for some Bay Area members and had also posted something about Dave's need for Bay Area members in the Super forum. After we had exchanged a couple of emails, Dave called me by mistake and left a message for Dan. I had to call him and advise that he had contacted Ralph and not Dan, and that as I had already mentioned in my e-mail reply to him, I'd not be able to provide anything more than color commentary since I don't have a stash of machines. He said he would still be interested in talking to me, as he was having a real hard time getting any of the area membership to play ball with him. I think once he got with Dan, he had all he needed!

I was the one that forwarded my initial contact with Dave Stoelk to Robert since I did not want to deal with him.

Not to worry. They will likely re-run it a few times if their current "Eye on the Bay" roster is any indication.

That is a absolutely awesome shirt! Where did you find it? By the way, how could you let that Frigidaire sneak it's way into the segment? The Maytags had it handled... (Ducks and runs...)

Being the Ebay whore that I am.... :D

The shirt was new and never used. Had to pull like 15 needles out of it and missed a few. That hurt!

Well, with the Frigidaire being a drama queen and all....... lol. Actually, the Maytags DID handle Mr. Frigidaire and booted his ass so hard he landed in Iowa SmiliesFTW.com
