A few members here in the past have asked me to do detailed transmission rebuild thread. Before taking on the task and possibly wasting my time, I was curious how many members here would interested in such a thread.

We'll be exploring the innards of the pitman driven transmissions ranging from the early style 54 OPM units, to the first gen 63 OPM, all the way to the very last production units that used a slight different arrangement of parts, like lips seals rather than o-ring seals. There will be many photos involved and lots of info and tricks not mentioned in any factory Maytag service manual. Other info will include compatible parts that vary throughout the years, using newer style parts that make the process quicker and easier, and upper housing disassembly/assembly that Maytag never went into much detail about.

The Candidates:

Hi Dan

I'd be interested, considering I have a few of these transmissions for use in my Wilkins Servis automatics which are essentially Maytag transmissions.

Cheers
Leon

I am interested

Hi Dan:

I am interested in case I ever need to tear into my A700 transmission. I think this would be a great thread to have in the archives anyhow!

Thanks in advance if you do decide to go through with documenting the process.

Andrew S.

Please do. I never worked on Maytag or Unimatic transmissions but regularly stripped Westinghouse and Whirlpool/Inglis b/d's
.
In UK Laundromats there were so many spare Maytags that they were junked at the first sign of expensive (parts or time) repairs.

If only I had kept one of the approximately 300 bolt down Westinghouse RCM 5/6/7/8 that I broke up for spares!
At the time all we wanted to see was New New New.

I am still running a Bock extractor dating from 1962 and some Rex Zanussi washers from 1974 that have done about 55,000 cycles.

Hi Dan, go for it I say, would be great to see step by step, sometimes just having the manual is hard work, pics and other peoples hot tips make it so much easier....and yes there are Maytags overseas as Bigfoot above says!!!

I wonder if the thread could be put in the "Restorations" area of the site for future reference,??

Hi Bigfoot, welcome to the club, are you a washer engineer or launderette owner?? would be great to here of your experiences working with Westinghouse, Rex and Maytags on this side of the pond!!! Cheers, Mike

cracked into any transmissions. I would like to see the rebuild of the Maytag and possible the WP/KM belt drive as well.

Not sure this should be a thread but perhaps there should be a special place on AW.org where this information should live.

Malcolm

Hi ChestermikeUK,

I am both, engineer and owner. Repairing, installing and totally rebuilding commercial washers, dryers, spinners and drycleaners since 1962.
At present only 3 shops owned but I have owned or part owned over 20 Launderettes or Coin op drycleaners over the years
I still have brochures and manuals going back to the 60's, but all coin op, no domestic.

It sounds like there's enough interest, so I'll take on the task of getting my camera oily and dirty, lol.

BTW, since I don't need 5 spare transmissions on hand, I'll probably be selling a couple of them that will be totally rebuilt as described in my up and coming posts. I've toyed around with idea of doing exchanges for those who don't have the skills, tools, time or mechanical know-how. However, with Whirlpool consistently jacking the price of parts sky high, coupled with shipping charges, I'm not so sure if it it would financially feasible in the long run. I would gladly accept any feedback relating to that topic.
