I'm glad they're making an attempt to bring the price of new-technology top-loaders down to a reasonable level, and it's my understanding the inner workings are simplified and easy to repair....but given the option of buying a top-loader with an impeller/wash plate or a front-loader, I'll take the front-loader every time.
I watch videos of impeller machines grinding away on a load of clothes and it makes me cringe. |

I saw three of the new low-end Cabrios tonight (debating the merits of buying a Whirlpool DD in Magna Red Gloss before they go out of production) at a local WP dealer. I am not sure I would have noticed the difference had I not known that a new machine was being made AND had I not just helped a friend shop for a Cabrio a couple weeks ago.
The lid on these machines is similar, but not exactly like the big lids on the WP and Maytag DD models. They do have lid locks. They sound kinda funny/rattle when you close them. The tubs are really 'bouncy' like that of a world-washer. Oh joy.... Gordon |

These new models are not the same as the Cabrios in any way, no parts are interchangeable. There are agitator versions with porcelain wash baskets even. Whirlpool has done thier homework on this machine, they intend to remain the worlds top producer of automatic washers. People didn't take the DD washer seriously at first yet it went on to be the most produced automatic washer in history, over 90 million produced. I would add it was the most reliable, long lived and easy to repair washer ever made, you will still be seeing DD washers 30 years from now in use.I would with hold judgment on the new models until you have some first hand experience with them.

John,
These new machines may not be mechanically related to the current platform we've known as the Cabrio, however they are very much called a Cabrio also. To the casual observer, they machines are not much different. The curvature of the lid is different, but the styling overall screams Cabrio. Time will tell how they work out. I wouldn't hold it against WP if there are some teething issues at first. I am anxious to see the porcelain tub and agitator models. I've been told they may not be around long - but will be on the market as long as they can squeak-by the government regulations concerning water use. Gordon |
