I almost had given up the idea to find my dream machine but after I got back from the convention I received a mail from a Dutch guy who was at first looking for parts of the machine I was looking for. After he decided to buy a new washer he mailed me and told me I could have this machine if I would pick it up. There was only one problem, namely that the pump was dead. No problem for me, you can still get one. So now I am the proud owner of a Philips AWB119, an H-axis toploader, the type of machine as some of you already know is my favourite.

I took a few pictures with a very cheap digital camera, so sometimes the quality is not that great (some pictures are a bit cranked) but you get the idea.

Under the lid there are two other lids. One for the drum and one for the detergent dispenser.

Both lids open. From left to right the softener dispenser, detergent dispenser and dispenser for the prewash detergent.

I've always wanted to ask; can you lift the lid during the cycle on these models to see the action?

I hope you enjoy your new find tremendously!!

Louis I can't tell you how happy I am for you. Boy is this exciting! Finding a dream machine like that doesn't happen too often that's for sure. It looks like a really neat machine, very thin too and in great shape.

How about cutting some plexiglas in the shape of the opening indent at the top of the washer and having some pictures and video???? We would love to see what is going on inside there.

Have you ever seen or used one of these Phillips to loaders before. Was in made in the Netherlands?

OMG..Louis

Congratulations on finding your dream machine, thats what happens when you wait long enough...will it be fully installed in the bathroom...stupid question really...of course it will!!!...

I love these machines for their flexibility, variable Time, Temperature and Spin Speed, of course the double bearing either side of the drum meant they just kept on going and on like yours. This must be 1980`s made. Is your Hot & Cold fill??

This was the first range of Top Loaders that I sold when I was a salesman at Trident....Philips was really ramping up the sales volume in the UK, had demonstrators in every store , mega incentives for sales staff...

Models AWB119 =1000rpm de-luxe & AWB103= 800rpm., and front loaders, AWB082, AWB096 & AWB098 ...

Enjoy, no sleep for you tonight!!!

p.s. this was the golden era of washing machines in the UK. Servis Slimlines & Selectronic, Hoover 1100 rpm new models, Hotpoint 15690 & 18580 with the famous purple controls. Also the last Hoover Keymatic was made this year...Oohhh it`s takin me back...

Thanks guys for the congrats, I'm in heaven although the machine isn't fully working at the moment.

Geoff, yes, you can very easily push in the lidswitch (left from the softener dispenser, not in the pictures) you don't even have to hold it down. Then you can open the inner lid and see how the drum turns. Ofcourse it is impossible to see the clothes tumble, this type of washer isn't big in washer drama.

Robert, I know this machine very well. I bought this same model new in 1982, mine was one of the last models, the production of this line was discontinued in that year. I used my machine until 1993 when the thermostat broke down. Because the repair was rather expensive I bought a new washer but regretted later that I got rid of the Philips.

This machine was made in France, Philips sold it's white goods division later to Whirlpool. They still make toploaders, but very different ones.

Mike, these machines do bring memories back for those in the appliances business. This machine is cold fill only.

Some more specifications: The spin speed of the AWB119 is 120 - 850. It has a Permanent Magnet motor, that draws max. 950 Watts. The heating element is only 2000 Watts. And it pauses now and then for tumbling a few revolutions. After the heating period it starts really washing. This was a 220V machine that could be used on a 10Amps fuse. It only starts to spin when the drum is full of water, in that way it compensates the lack of weight, the machine is only 59kg. This machine came with a lot of documentation, I still have to go through it and will tell more about that tomorrow.

Louis

Excellent!

Very happy for you, Louis. Very.

I have some questions:

What is the button to the left of the timer?

Is this a permanently installed or a portable machine, with faucet connection?

Thanks guys, sharing this with other washer afficionados makes the pleasure even bigger!

I got all the documentation of this machine with it. The manual, the receipts and the repair bills.

The machine was bought on July 27th 1982 and delivered on August 2nd. So this machine is from the same year as the one I bought new in that 1982.

In the beginning this was quite a troublesome machine. Only two weeks after the delivery (August 16th) the thermostat was replaced. Three days later the repair man was there again and replaced the timer. Six months later there were troubles with the lid lock. It doesn't say if the lock was replaced or not. So that was the third repair in six months. The last (documented) repair was done on Sept. 25th 1984, the machine got new bearings and everything was checked. That is the last documentation about this washer. However when I opened the little trap door on the bottom front I noticed the pump looks different than on my old one. I don't know if just the small lid was replaced or the whole pump.

Interesting material!!

Louis

Oy vey mir! LOL My apartment is rather small, people often ask where I keep my washers! I guess it will work if not big group is coming over. If I win the lottery I will move! LOL

Lawrence,

Under the control light there is indeed a brown button. I assume you meant that one. It's for releasing the lid lock.

Does sound like a friday afternoon machine, never heard of bearings being changed on those two bearing machines!!

We must have had different specs in UK because the AWB119 was definatly a 1000 spin machine, it was marketed as a better extraction than the new Hoover at 1100rpm because of the wider diameter drum...interesting..

I love the dispenser as its deep and plenty of flushing water to quickly dissolve the powder into the drum.

The pump will be a doddle to change,

Happy Washing.

You have pined after that machine as long as Robert has pined for an Apex!
It is so like a high end stereo with those Aluminum knobs for the controls!
Can't wait to see it run and see Mike's Keymatic run too! I'll be back over just you WAIT!

Does it have a heat setting for a boil wash?
I was so surprised to learn at Mike's how many machines have that feature in Europe and how the English have all switched to Electric Showers in the last 30 years!
Even Mike's Dishwasher starts with a COLD Water wash and then heats the water. There is almost no central hot water, he has a small dishwasher sized booster heater mounted under a counter in the laundry room but ( and I know you told me ) I can't remember what it was used for except filling the Twin Tubs.
But even his Hoover has a heater in it!

A very different approach from what we do over here.

O Louis you'll have some fun washing ahead

jon

That is such a good looking machine! It is obvious how old it is, but it looks so now.
I bet you can't wait to get it running!
Will it be your main squeeze so to speak?
It is a very, very cool looking washer.
What is it's capacity?

Mike,

Aren't you confusing this machine with another Philips? Philips made indeed a few 1000rpm machines (Philips was the first manufacturer to release an H-axis washer with 1000rpm spin) but as far as I know 850rpm was the max on these machines until the more plasticlike machines with 1100rpm. However I noticed there were two AWB 119 models. I have some pictures of other Philips toploaders, I will post them later to show what types of toploaders Philips made.

Jon,

Yes, this machine can do a boil wash, or actually a 90* Celcius (195* Fahrenheit) one. Although I have central hot water (heated by the compact furnace) my appliances are also connected to cold water only.

Brent,

This washer can handle 10lbs of laundry. My main washers are the Miele and AEG frontloaders, the rest is only used now and then. To be honest the Philips is not as well built as the German machines so I don't want to use it too often. Indeed a very cool looking machine.

Louis

This is a Philips toploader from the seventies. Glass lid and control panel already towards the style of mine. I'm not sure but I think the spin was only 300rpm. These machines were made in France.

Somewhere in the seventies Philips introduced the Philips CC1000. As I said the first H-axis machine (front- or toploading) that did a 1000rpm spin. I'm not sure but I think these machines were made in England. The control light is the same as on my machine. I have never seen one of those in real.

I borrowed these pictures from the German website www.waschmaschinen-forum.de... where they were displayed as pictures of the day.

There was another style of machines made by Philips, I think also in the early seventies. Before I saw the above picture of the CC1000 I always thought that was the CC1000. A while ago I made a few pictures from a Ruton labeled Philips machine that was waiting on the street to be picked up by the trash men. I think I remember that the colors of the control panel of the similar Philips machine were blue. The state of the machine was awful, but the picture shows the type of the machine.

Louis, I can't quite tell from the pictures but on those machines does the drum opening open automatically when you lift the lid or do you lift the lid, then the drum lid?

Used top loading H-Axis washers when living/staying in France (where such models are VERY popular), and one opens the outer lid first, then unlatches/opens the inner drum.

Inner drums lids are usually closed and locked by some type of "pinch" lock which one supposes also helps keep little hands from danger.

Hi Louis,
Congratulations on your new Philips horizontal axis Top Loader. I remember seeing one of those machines when I was 14; I was totally fascinated by the design. Philips have made some great washers over the years my favorite being the Series 90 machines with the 160 RPM distribution drain and the Permag™ Motors.
I wish you many years of happy Philips washing

All the best.

Yesterday I got some life in the old pump. I did a load of towels, it was great to hear the sounds of the machine again! I'm still going to replace the pump though, it's leaking oil.

I also got a mail from the mother of the previous owner. The first owner was her mother, so the grandmother of the previous owner. She shared with me some memories which make this machine even more special.

Great machine, I love the spin draining on these ones.

Their weak point were the timers, the mechanism can get stuck due to dried grease and dust accumulation, the switches tends to burn too.
Already fixed one of those, it wasn't easy but worth it.

The Philips with glass lid exists also in Bosch and a few other French brands.
