You never know what will turn up in the classifieds... Check this out - I found it on the Montreal Kijiji site this evening! Naturally, I sent them an email... Hubby will be even more annoyed than usual - why? 'Cause I know where I can get the matching dryer!!
Here's an overall photo of the machine from the ad:

Looks like that machine has more or less the same capabilities as the 206 you recently picked up.

It also looks like you've got a beautiful matched pair in your future!

Nice going!

First the good news...

turquoisedude's profile picture
I heard back from the seller - I was the first to contact her about the machine and although I am not going to be able to actually see the machine until next Monday, she very generously and courteously offered to consider the machine sold until I tell her otherwise (like THAT is going to happen!!). So, that means I will have to scramble to Sherbrooke on Saturday and say a couple of prayers that the dryer is still available...

Now the bad news...

Hubby's NOT impressed...
However, I do realize that I am going to have to make some room for the 'Tags. That being the case, I will be needing to find new homes for the A206 that I just got and very possibly also the '58 GE Clothes Conditioner dryer...
The A206 is going for what I paid for it - FREE! The dryer, please contact me.

He must be mellowing! He hardly batted an eyelid when the A206 arrived and when I got the latest Whirlpool dishwasher - I guess nearly 19 years together (that will be official next Tuesday) has maybe almost got him to appreciate vintage appliances. OK, that and the fact that I would sulk for weeks... LOL

A question...

turquoisedude's profile picture
I am probably be able to fit the washer into the back of the station wagon but it will have to be on its back... I moved the Inglis that way with no issues but I managed to drain most of the transmission oil out of the Frigidaire when I moved it. Would something bad happen to the Maytag if I move it on its back?? I know the dryer is probably not going to fit (the Maytag dryers of this vintage are like 30 inches wide - wider than the washers, IIRC).

redcarpetdrew's profile picture
Unlikely with the proper precautions. Take pillows or blankets and stuff them inbetween the tub and the cabinet. You want to keep the tub mech from moving around and possibly damaging the out of balance lever. If you had a tub block (or they did) this would solve that problem in a much easier way. Also, TAPE THE LID. You'd think this would be automatic but it happens where they don't and then you get consolus damagicus when the lid smacks the timer/console. you can lower the drain hose and get pretty much all the water out that way.

You can transport the machine on any side except the front. Transmission oil won't leak unless there's a leak already in progress. The tub really should be centered and padded so it won't bash against the cabinet and deform the metal tub gasket ring. Before I got a tub block, I used 4-6 blankets packed around tub.

Dan, Andrew - Thanks for the advice! Never thought about using pillows in the tub to keep it centred. I will definitely make a point of doing so!! I learned the hard way about not taping tub lids - trust me!!!
Pete: I can't be sure of the year but I was told it was purchased when the house where it now lives was built in 1960.
I am so excited!! I will be heading to the appliance store where I had seen the dryer tomorrow... Keeping my fingers crossed!!

A702

Nice Maytag - the slightly younger brother to my '61 A700!

I think you are probably looking at '63-'65 or so on an A702 for the build date. My A700 was made in November of '61 and I think the A702 model replaced it shortly thereafter. One of the Maytag experts can probably confirm this.

If you can get the serial number, we can decode it too.

Good luck!

Got the dryer!

turquoisedude's profile picture
I was doing my 'happy dance' when I called the thrift store in Sherbrooke to see if the Maytag dryer (that will be paired up with the washer I found last week) was still available and learned that it was!! My neighbor in Ogden generously offered to pick it up for me, too. But get this, when he got there, the store hiked the price to $200! The other dryers they had on the floor were around $100-110... My neighbour did not take too kindly to this and got the price down to $120... Amazing how the price goes up when people know they have someone interested in an older piece... Swine...
ANYWAY, putting all the bitterness aside, this is what came to stay in Ogden!

I didn't realize there was a pilot light either - the bulb was burnt out, so I changed it. I checked out the motor and filter area - looks like the folks at the thrift store did some spring cleaning for me! There was no dreaded lint build-up. I was kind of surprised by that white socket to the left of the drum pulley. According to the wiring diagram this is for a germicidal lamp! I didn't have one, so I subbed a C9 base bulb temporarily.
Funny spot for the germicidal lamp, no??

110V test

turquoisedude's profile picture
I didn't have time to play electrician and rig up a 220v extension in garage, so I hooked up just the 110v feed. The lights came on, the motor started and the drum turned smoothly! I initially thought I had a timer issue - it didn't seem to advance when I did the first test. However, I hooked it up on it's own and the motor ran and the dial did advance... When I hooked it up again, the dial advanced and at the end of the cycle - the bell chimed about every 30 or 40 seconds to remind you "DUDE! Your clothes are dry!"

Just one last shot of the control panel!
I didn't get all of the serial number of the dryer, but it ended in LV (I think those may be the date codes) - I am going to guess 1962 or 1963 for the year...
Now, I will 'close the deal' on the washer tomorrow night, but I have a wee dilemma... The Ford station wagon we use as our summer car kind of conked out on us as we headed back to Montreal... Come hell or high water though, that Maytag washer will be in Ogden soon! Stay tuned!!

MT DE700 DRYER

combo52's profile picture
Hi Paul looks like you got good dryer. The ozone lamp is in a good location as you are not supposed to look directly at them. Its location allows the air coming into the dryer cabinet to pickup the ozone gas generated by the bulb and carry it over the clothes in the dryer as they dry. When the ozone bulbs are wired in series with the 40 watt drum lamp as it is in this machine you can just bypass the socket so the drum lamp will still work with no ill effects. Ozone bulbs contain mercury and are hard to find new, they were used in many old air cleaners and even some early ventless range hoods they have a very long life so they can be found. If you use the ozone lamp its best to vent the dryer out side as the ozone gas thats generated can be irritating to your nasal passages etc. The gas can also degrade rubber parts. It looks like your dryer still has the old pot-metal motor pulley, these would tend to wear and not turn the drum well with a heavy load, these should always be replaced if the sides of the pulley grove are rounded at all, they should be straight and flat. This was one of the most over looked mechanical problems on early HOH dryers, MT changed to a steel pulley in the late 1960s or early 1970s, all replacements are steel and they are all interchangeable.

Tonight's Update

turquoisedude's profile picture
The washer is SOLD... To me!! HEEHEEHEEHEE!!
I had a chance to run it briefly and it works beautifully, lighted console and all. I didn't get a look at the model number, but the owner of the machine says she bought it in 1964. The tub is pristine - shiny, smooth, white porcelain and the agitator is black with chrome accents. It looks like it has a fabric softener dispenser and I know I saw a bleach funnel. I also noticed a round disc-like button or dial on the very far right-hand side of the top of the console. It is now killing me to know what that is - I was swooning too much to really pay attention!!
And now tonight's question: How does the top of a Maytag washer come off? I want to pad the tub and protect the tub ring for transport (the car is fixed - PHEW!). I am used to the GE and Whirlpool 'insert a screwdriver and pry' tops but I don't want to mess up the cabinet of this 'new' Maytag of mine...

The dial on the right side of the control panel top is the rinse temperature selector. Cold or Automatic settings. You can have all cold rinses or the machine will give warm rinses with hot water selection for wash temp.

You don't pry up the top on a Maytag, just remove the two phillips head screws at the bottom of the front panel then push it down slightly from the edge of the panel where it meets the top and pull it away from the machine.

I always move the machines on their sides - motor side down toward the car floor. You can also block the motor while you're in there, it will tend to move and you don't want that heavy thing flopping around to much ;-) The motor side is the heavy side of the machine and simple physics makes it easier to move when the weight isn't up in the air and having it on it's side is easier as there is no lip at the machine top that has to be lifted in and out of the car. I was never intimidated with moving these machines by myself as long as I have my escalara and a low-deck vehicle - I can get most anything home!

I would be careful bypassing the ozone bulb, I tried that in my Frigidaire tower dryer, there was a loud bang, the bulb exploded & fried the socket. I THINK F. fed 220 to the light curcit as in series voltage is reduced.

DE/DG700 ran from '61-'64. Same goes for the 701. 702 washers/dryers and 902 washers only ran from 64-65. For dryers in 1964, you could purchase a DE/DG 700, 701, 702, and 750. For washers, you could purchase a 700, 702, 900, 902. Lots of TOL goodness to choose from during that year!

There is no problem with bypassing the missing ozone lamp. The 641c that I got from Dan was missing the light and socket. Jumpered the two wires together and, Bingo, the drum light lives... The 741c dryer of mine actually has a working ozone...

Date codes

The "OC" is probably "QC" as the old Maytag chart does not seem to use the letter "O." So, it looks like January of 1965 for the washer.

"LV" looks like August of 1963 for the dryer.

The washer made it....

turquoisedude's profile picture
eventually! Oy, I swear that there are two ways to do things: the easy way or the 'turquoisedude' way... The washer was safely loaded into the Focus wagon on Thursday and it was sent down to Ogden with Hubby on Friday. Trouble was once he got to the house, we didn't have a driveway! It was being totally re-done to eliminate the seasonal wash-outs we have every summer - the work was supposed to be done by Friday. Nope! By the end of the day Friday, the contractor put down some loose fill but with the weight of the machine, the poor 'lil Focus huffed and puffed, but couldn't get up the hill... So on Saturday morning, we brought the SX4 out of storage and used it to haul the A702 up the hill. It barely fit, but it made it safe and sound!

Inside the control panel, the wiring and controls looked like new. I do believe that the timer is, quite literally, new. The former owner had mentioned the machine needing a repair a few years ago and the part required was not available in Canada, so it was sent in from the US. Wonder if that happened before Whirlpool sucked Maytag into their universe...

and I don't normally go to this kind of effort, but I just had to give the base plate and inside cabinet a cleaning. The result? I felt like I had just had the washer delivered by Eatons or Dupuis Freres... The machine was still pristine under the dust!

So, the next logical step was to bring the washer into its new home - the basement laundry room! This was the big test - to make sure there were no leaks or other surprises. The original Maytag hoses were still on the machine, but had become stiff with old age. I changed them and also replaced the drain hose with a more flexible one. It was worth it - not a drop of stray water anywhere!

and there always is one, I think I have an issue with the water inlet solenoid in the washer. When the 'HOT' button for the wash water temperature is pressed, no water flows into the washer and when he 'WARM' button is pressed, the water flows, but really, really slowly. It's a fancy water valve, too, with three solenoids... Would this part still be available??
AND, the door gasket on the dryer is pretty rough. I will have to look for a replacement there, too.
However, I cannot and will not complain. I got a dream machine set, they are in beautiful shape, and I did not have to do any major work on them! It has totally inspired me to get the Inglis set back up and running, just so they too can illuminate the laundry room!!

Brandon, I could never understand why the Maytag dryers were always wider than the washers! I have an older GE that is like that, too... But what the heck - they look great!! Thanks for your comments!!!

I think I have an issue with the water inlet solenoid in the washer. When the 'HOT' button for the wash water temperature is pressed, no water flows into the washer and when he 'WARM' button is pressed, the water flows, but really, really slowly.

Check the screens on the water valve. They're probably just clogged.

Would this part still be available??

Been NLA for a while, but they're still out there. The common 205613 non thermo water valve can be easily adapted to work. It's a direct bolt on.

The door gasket on the dryer is pretty rough. I will have to look for a replacement there, too.

Those are getting mighty hard to find now, but can still be had with some research and patience.

Is the drum light burned out on the dryer or is it just the camera angle?

Most certainly a really nice set!!

INLET VALVE PROBLEMS

combo52's profile picture
Larry @ Modern parts still had the three coil thermostat inlet valves not long ago I bought several of them. The valve you have may be repairable, first check the screens but this is almost never the problem. [ Never remove the screens from the valve for cleaning unless you are replacing them, they get bent very easily and they won't fit well when you try to reinstall them and dirt may get around the edges and cause the valve to stick open and the washer will flood] Just gently loosen the dirt and flush or blow it away from the screen. For no filling at all check the valve coils they do go bad and can be replaced easily and for any machine thats this old all three valve diaframes should be replaced. This is quite easy to do and Larry still has the kits to do this.

How did the lint filter look? Usually they look just horrible, all gunked up and the like.

Tim, you wouldn't believe it - it looks wonderful! I showed it briefly in one of the videos that I have posted as part of this thread. It's stainless and still bright, shiny, and clean as a whistle!! I can always take more pictures, too...
