Picked up.
I might have to keep these! As it turns out, the washer spins just fine. There are no leaks and the bearings are nice and quiet. I'll post some pics once I get my hands on my camera. They are 1971 models.
The dryer works. There is no squealing, no thumping, but I did get s quick chirp when the motor turned on. I think a new belt might be in order. My only problem is that it's electric. How hard is it to change this puppy over to gas? Would it be feasible to get a relatively recent 29" gas dryer for parts? Which dryer would be the better performer for Maytag A806-sized loads? A DE806 or the electric 1971 KM 800? As an aside, I just brought a 1973 KM 800 gas drier over to my boss. The drum has seen better days. Are all 29" drums compatible or are there differences? SWITCHING FROM ELECTRIC TO GAS
Hi Dave I have switched many dryers back and forth on fuel type you could use the 1973 KM as a donor. To switch them however you need to be completely familiar with all the controls wiring and assemblies of both types of dryers, its not something I would encourage most people to try. As far as which dryer would make a better daily driver, the DE806 or the 1971 KM 800 there is not much contest the KMs much faster ,bigger,more energy efficient, safer, more versatile and you can still get most of the functional parts to keep it running. That said the MT 806 is a neat dryer and if you do a lot of smaller loads and stay close when its in use both to keep an eye on things and to remove the clothing promptly so it doesn't wrinkle it can be a fun dryer.

Thanks for your replies.
My boss is using the '73, so that is not an option for a parts machine. Besides, I would prefer to have a much more recent machine for use as parts so I don't destroy an older one. As a historic preservationist, I follow historic preservation ethics to the letter, and destroying something historic, even if to fix something else historic, is a big no-no. I know WP has made the 29" dryer for many years and still makes it today, hence my interest in finding a used one that is not old enough to be interesting. I just would like to know what parts are and are not compatible between 1971 and something more recent, also if these dryers came in different capacities since my boss's '73 could stand a new drum. My goal is to look for a free 29" WP-built gas dryer on CL, bring it back, and then gut it for use as parts. As for the one on ebay, although it is a perfect match, it's $130, which is more than I paid for the matched 71 set I just got! Also, Akron is quite far from here. Maybe if the '71 on Ebay were significantly cheaper. I'll see. Thanks, Dave | ||
