Label - Why does model number say AA806? I thought Avocados were supposed to say VA806.

-If I'm correct, serial number indicates manufacturing date as, Dec., 1979.

Close-up of base. There were no oil or water leaks so tub seal and transmission service were not needed.

Took out this screw plug and gave the pump two or three generous squirts of turbine oil. Pump started turning like new.

Almost completed. Replaced tub to pump hose and pump to drain hose.

This washer had the older style tub bearing and I was able to inject 6cc of turbine oil into it using a syringe and large needle for smooth operation.

I put a zip tie on the hose that attaches to the bleach dispenser cup to keep it from coming off again. I adjusted the spacing of tub cover and inner basket with two heavy plastic coat hangers. This also created the proper clearance between the top cover and tub cover.

The dial is the only blemish on an otherwise near perfect restoration. I would like to get one in better condition. If anyone has a spare laying around and you could part with it I would greatly appreciate you contacting me. Or if you know of a source where I could get one please let me know.

While you wait to find a dial, you could print this on a CD label and stick it over it for a temporary fix:

806 RESTORATION

Very nice restoration Brain you did an excellent job of doing what is necessary without going to extremes and actually not coming up with as good an overall result. The two minor things I would do differently would to replace the inlet valve since you can still get excellent quality replacements for this machine, inlet valves do fail and after 30+ years I wouldn't trust it. I would also use a small SS hose clamp on the bleach hose, plastic ties tend to expand when they get warm and can come loose.

That is one beautiful A806! Nice job on the restoration. It looks better than brand new after all the time you put in to it!

So where did you find those rubber pads for the feet? I went to my local Maytag shop and Whirlpool charges something like $12 a piece for those little rubber pads now. I thought that was a bit outrageous.

Here's a pic of mine from 1970. No restoration on mine but didn't really need one.

Thanks for all the compliments fellas. It was hard work, but worth it.
I replaced the motor carriage glides, cleaned the carriage and put on new poly-lube too. The old springs were in good shape and seemed to have more tension, so I used them. I have the new ones if they break, but I don't think they will. Also put on new belts, of course.

Ken, thanks for the idea. The old one is readable, but it just looks awful. I'd like the dial to look as nice as the washer.

Jonathan, I got the rubber feet covers from our local Maytag Direct Appliance Store. I think they were $6 something a piece. Kinda high, but as you can see from the pics, it had to be done. It's important for proper leveling and cushioning. I was just glad they were still available. Your machine looks really nice, too. I kinda wanted the harvest gold, but this machine came along, in fairly good shape, so I went for it.

John, I'll be collecting spare parts as I go along. Need to recover from this investment first. The old valve's working fine for now.

If anyone has a dial they'd like to sell that would fit my machine, send me and email. That one needs to be replaced badly. Next, I'm going to be looking for the matching dryer. I guess I'll look for an 808 dryer. The 806 with the gold strip on the panel are very rare, as most of us know. I think I want gas, but I might consider electric, if a really nice one came along. And if I get gas, I'd probably be better off with an 808. Gas seems to have a bit of a rusting affect and I'd need one in good shape, if it's going to last. What do you guys think? Add to that, the parts for the 806 dryers are getting pretty hard to find.

Lastly, I'd like to thank qsd-dan and redcarpetdrew. Your posts from the past were invaluable. And many others, too.
Thanks Robert, for the site. It's wonderful.

I'll try to work on a video, too.

Talk to you soon.

Could the A at the beginning of the model # be the code for the non shaded avocado color, we don't see many MTs in this color, this may have been about the last of the avocado machines.
