I have a question about repairing the suspension in an 18 year old SQ toploader. When the machine goes into spin, it starts to rock and and forth and banging like it is unbalanced. However, after opening it, the load is fine. After pushing the tub forward about 3 or 4 inches, then it will be ok once it gets up to speed. Is this the springs wearing out? Or some other issue with the tub?

I believe there are a series of springs between the baseplate and the tub supports. I don't think they are adjustable, but you would have to check to be sure. It is possible that one or more of them have broken lose and need to be replaced.

Perhaps posting a picture of the interior of the cabinet might be helpful in directing your efforts.

It may look something like this. Notice the spring.

If I am not mistaken the springs on the 18 year old SQ should be up and down and not like the newer design. That said its possible that the snubber under the wash system module could be shot. Its a piece thats under the support dome. It looks like a ring and lets the support float.
