Hey Gang ---
I'll try to make this less talk, more photos as the pictures really do justice for the AMP set that was recently on eBay. With western Iowa so close to Waterloo, as well as Omaha, there wasn't any reason why this set needed to leave it's native state after reaching retirement age in the new millennium. Check the link to Greg's post for the full story on this weekend and a write up on how the set came to be. I can't imagine that they've been used since the mid 50's. The lack of rust and how dry everything was would lead one to believe that the set was not in a basement but probably in a main floor laundry area for it's entire life. Saturday was an unseasonably cool day in the Midwest with some fairly strong rain storms that came through. We made the trek to Red Oak, Iowa in the late morning, and brought the set back to Omaha for a much deserved check over for the remainder of the day.

This dryer is a very EARLY production 60W dryer with the hanging motor and idler for the pump belt. Not that it makes using this dryer any easier - even Rude Goldberg would have been ashamed!
Shortly after production they went to a fixed mount for the motor with a fixed idler called the "kiss idler" to keep the belt from inverting and falling off the pulleys. Thankfully a skini-mini belt worked in place of the dry-rotted original. |

The dryer even came with 50 year old dust!
One of the strange things about these early Maytag dryers is the top does not feature a porcelain finish, but instead an enamel paint. This is the reason for the scuffs, scratches, and slight rust that has occurred during terms for the last 11 presidents. Also, even though the dryer is almost an exact match of the washer, instead of having red dots painted on the top panel, the dryer features little chrome balls similar to the A3MP and later Customatic Maytags for the control indicators. I suspect they didn't want to tool an entirely different top for just the AMP knowing the A3MP was just around the corner. This post was last edited 09/26/2010 at 23:07 |

So... after priming the pump with super hot water, we threw some juice to the timer and waited with baited breath for the AMP's response.
The only issue? The trip lever was sticky/stuck after sitting for decades. Otherwise, everything else works expect the timer motor! No leaks no squeals, perfect agitation and the quietest spin you'll ever hear on a Maytag. However, since this is an AMP you need to remove the cabinet to do pretty much any service work. Dryer model tag. Now, I'm really not sure if this is the 2008th 60W made, or possibly the 008th 60W.
After looking over the machine this weekend and seeing the early hinged/floating motor and idler pulley arrangement (which was changed to a fix mount weeks after initial production), as well as the early gang box connection for the electrical service hook-up (which was changed completely on March 6th), this 60W could be one of the earliest examples of a Maytag dryer in existence. Also, why have a date code of April 53 when we know it was probably made in either February or early March due to the changes that are documented in the repair supplements? I'm not sure if there are any documents out there that could validate my theories, but still, very cool! Notice that the tag is screwed on and not riveted... Dryer money shot.
While the dryer is in good shape, it does need a complete tear down and rebuild before it should be put to use. These are very sensitive machines that have multiple shut offs based on water pressure from the water valve and from the output volume of the pump, that require everything to be in tip-top shape for complete operation. I'm in no rush to work on it but for now it will look great next to the matching washer! Thanks again Greg for the great weekend, and I hope everyone enjoys the photos and a trip down Maytag history lane! Ben |

Ben congratulations on getting these are a must have for any really serious MT collector, its the same set I have except your washer is newer and your dryer just a little older. Your washer must be near the end of the original AMPs mine is made closer to 1950, even the washer lid bottom is still cast aluminum so at least it doesn't have the porcelain chipping problem at the weld points. I hope you decide to tackle the dryer soon the one I have is later as mine has the chrome knobs. I have been dyeing to try mine out since I got it but some how it got pushed into a corner and I haven't gotten around to it. Let me know when you get inspired to tackle it and I will do the same, I think we may have the only two of these original condenser MT dryers out there?.

I'm talking about that spectacular red agitator with the fully erect chrome head. How ironic that as technology advanced, the need for the erectile chrome head vanished, and there went the coolest, most beautiful agitator Maytag ever made. What a pity!
Ben, studying the control dial, I wondering, is that a one-of-a-kind, double rinsing early Maytag like the Frigi WO-65, or is the first rinse a long spray? I ask only because other early models are marked spray, and this one is not, and who would have guessed that early Frigidaires did not overflow but double rinsed instead ?!!! |

Robert, ever since my first trip to your place during a cold winter's day in January of '06, I have been waiting to find an AMP. Thanks for being a great mentor!
Eddie, don't be sad about the AMP you guys had in your garage. For most, even after 5 to 10 years these washers looked outdated and were totally improved by what Maytag had for sale at the time. It is truly amazing how many AMP thru 140 washers have survived. Jon - someday I hope to have the dryer up and running again. Certainly wouldn't be a daily driver, but would love to trade notes with you. Greg mentioned your water dryer (possibly a 61W?) had the kiss idler - be greatful! I'll let you know when I start tearing into it. Thankfully - the seal parts for the pump are interchangeable with wringer pump parts. YAY! Unless someone else is posting here on AW, you and I might have the only existing machines left with the Maytag Water Film drying system. Mike - the first rinse mark on the dial is for Maytag's famous spray rinse, which seems strange for a solid tub. Learning from Greg, they probably wanted to keep the complete cycle time down and couldn't do a second full rinse within 30 minutes and interchanged the first spin with a spray rinse to save time. Just a hunch, so maybe I should read that patent someday ;-) Peter, tomorrow I'll scan the cut away of the dryer, along with the explanation from Maytag of the original water film drying technique, along with the water condensation that came out in late 1955. Should be fairly informative. Gary - gasp, something other than a Maytag? It better be good! j/k Kelly - your wish for a quick wash video is pending processing with YouTube as I type. There is a slight chance it might be in HD! Heck, this might be one of the first 1080p washer clips on YouTube! Thanks again guys. I hooked up the digital A9900 Maytag yesterday for the first time in 2 years, and while I was enjoying the orbital wash action, I couldn't help but walk over to the old AMP, knowing that it is where everything Automatic Maytag started from! Hi Ben thanks again for your interest in the MT condensing dryers, I went by the warehouse on the way home to check out the differences in our 60Ws. Mine is model # 60W 04 the ser# is 602806GH mine has chrome metal knobs with the same dials and it has the newer front plastic MT emblem that lights up. Other wise they look about identical, mine has the same motor mount and idler pulley arrangement for the pump belt, even the same electrical junction box. I don't think these were changed till the 601Ws ?. I also have a fully restored 640w that works great, Tom found it at an estate sale about 15 years ago. When I got this one you could still get all the functional parts from MT so I replaced the inlet valve ,belts ,drain hose and rebuilt the blower- water extraction chamber and the machine worked very well. I suspect the newer one dries a little faster and at a lower clothing temperature. The addition of a lint filter probably helped prevent pump clogging also. I am still excited to try this earlier one out soon, I always like to have not only the first of something but the last as well. At our warehouse we have aprox 16 MT built laundry appliances stretching from these AMPs all the way through a set of stack Neptune's,.

Ben that' is one heck of a find you have to be proud to have that in your collection.
So you should get the maytag hat i have sent one to Robert for his wash in so if you want it you can e-mail me i also wanted to give one to Qsd-Dan & Maytagbear if there interested as well. I got these at my store for a promotion for May is for maytag month so the words should fit perfectly for your washer. I had no idea that the pump on the very first model stayed on interesting and what is water drying ? Super great pair. Darren k. This post was last edited 09/29/2010 at 14:59 |
