!!!

Stopped in a local large thrift store, and found a few really nice appliances. Some old percolators, washers, stoves and 2 cool vacuums.

The highlights had to be these $39.95 a piece machines. One is an old metal panel Maytag dryer, in VERY nice condition. Just dirty. And the other is a Kitchenaid dishwasher. That was also very nice internally. The outside had a few dings though.

Thought I would share. Oh how I want that dishwasher! The dryer as well!

Here is the dishwasher.

How old is this one?

Innards

There were some foam pieces. I believe insulation thrown inside. Otherwise this baby was so clean!

The only thing I walked out with

This is the only thing I purchased considering I had $10 on me, and this was $9.

Its a 1969 dial a matic power drive. and its SOOOOOO QUIET!!!!!! By hoover clean air upright designs this is the quietest I have ever heard. Its VERY VERY nice except for some paint loss on the base. Still needs some cleaning. But my gosh its so good running. Best $10 I have spent in a long time.

Base

Its a model 1170.

PS. I wish I took an interior shot of the Tag dryer. It was MINT

Brandon, great finds there. That KitchenAid looks to be in great shape.

Thanks!

Thanks Terry!

My mom really likes the dishwasher, and since ours is showing signs of rust she may want to replace it. However that depends on how soon we are moving. It may be by the end of october.

Rare KitchenAid DW?

That just might be an unusual KDI-21 with indicator lights located where most of them have a control knob. The white float and detergent dispensers could be an indication of the 22 series but the panel looks like a 20 or 21. We installed a KDI-21 with the control knob at our other house. It performed problem-free for the 18 years we were there.

Having just seen a pristine KDS-21 yesterday that fellow member Nate (roto204) scored, I know those machines have more than three indicator lights on the left.

Maybe an expert will post something here to advise. Regardless, it would be well worth grabbing if it's still there.

that KA is either a KDS19 or it's one of the last of the Patrician models. Never seen one with button arrangement as this, but it only has the 3 action indicator lights too.

That is a 21-23 series machine. My guess is 21.

that KA is either a KDS19

Definitely not a KDS-19. This is a KDS-19....

I think it is a Patrician model also.

My guess is the 22 series since it looks somehwhat like my Superba '22' series.

It

It sounds like its a good buy at just $40.

mmmhmmmmm..... I dont know what my mom would think if I spent my paycheck and came home with this!!! She may thank me later on.

Dang I do wish they had a wringer washer in there.

They did have this really fancy looking newer maytag next to that old dryer. It had this royal "crest" like badge on it, front loader, but with that cornered off top, kind of a yellowish gold color. Looked expensive.

Across from that was an 80s model similar to the old white one, yet it had the dial on the right side. Same door and similar size. Me thinks it was close in age.

They had some various 60s and 70s stoves that looked quite nice. They get a great selection in there from time to time.

Found something cool inside the dial a matic.

This thing is soooo clean. I didn't clean this up. This is how it came.

Now I dont know much on these, can someone tell me where I can find the serial number on it?

That fancy Maytag sounds like a Neptune. I'd not bother with it.

Hey Dan, you need a KDS 20 to go with that KDS 19? I've got one I want to unload.

Perhaps. Its older and more squared off than the curvy toped new ones.

My grandparents had a set. In the same color I think. I always liked the gold badge on it, reminded me of a coat of arms or something.

Gosh I wish I took a pic. It was a real clean machine for $40.

Brandon, you should have snapped a photo of the early 50's Hotpoint 40" Range that was also at the thrift store!

Whoa! didnt think it was quite that old! Or maybe I just didn't study it enough, or maybe it wasn't there anymore.

Ill go over there tomorrow after school and get some pics, if its still there.

Best place to get old vacuums. Ive gotten 3 of them from there-

as follows-

Hoover Convertible U4123 all original
Eureka Rotomatic from 1955, all original- gona pick up from a friend.
And today of course that Dial a Matic.

That dishwasher is a 21 or greater. That's when they dropped the classic design, because the Hobart division of home dishwashers was bought by "Whirlpuddle". I can't see the sump clearly, but the heating element is in the wrong place. Hobart didn't do this.
Also the handles on the cutlery basket are shaped differently than the older ones. It musts be a "Surperba", but the buttons are arranged strangely.
This is probably not a bad dishwasher but after W/P got a hold of them, they started to go downhill. The government started putting restrictions on the manufacturers, and everybody wanted everything for a song, so they sent production to other countries to be built and our jobs and quality went with them. Landfills full of junk appliances. How nice.
Anyway, you have to look for traces of water leaks under the machine, and around the motor and slinger. If it has a motor shaft seal leak, the slinger would have thrown water around under the tub in a circular pattern. It could also have a door gasket leak or an internal leak inside the door, water valve malfunction, clog in hose, damaged or jammed impeller, or an electrical problem. It could be something easy or more complicated. If it's complicated, a service manual comes in handy. It's a learning process. You have to decide if you want to tackle it. Look around - find out how many parts are available for that model.
The tines on the bottom rack are bent in different directions. Look for rust spots on the racks. It gets under the vinyl and corrodes underneath it. It can be repaired with a drimmel tool and the carbon steal brush. Then a couple of coats of JB Weld painted around the polished steal with a short wide stiff artists brush works (a tedious process). Sometimes new bottom racks can be had for around a hundred dollars, if you want to pay the money. Top racks are more expensive.
Personally, I wouldn't do it on any thing less than a KDS-20 through 18. Maybe a 17 or 16. Haven't worked on anything other than a 20.
Just my opinion. Others may feel differently.

Ben, or Greg

did either of you happen to examine the Tag dryer or the Kitchenaid dishwasher? If so what did you think of them?

Post# 466100 , Reply# 19   9/27/2010 at 22:50 (4,958 days old) by washernoob ()

You think that kitchenaid looks defective, lol you should see our dishwasher. Our racks in them are so brittle. A few tines are broken off, and the rack is showing rust. Ouchy! It was a good washer. Just seems to be getting to old/worn out.

Made in Ohio

Brian, this machine was NOT made in another country. If it is a Whirlpool product (as long as it was originally sold in the US), it was produced in their gigantic dishwasher factory on the north side of Findlay, OH. I pass by there whenever I visit my Sister. Of course, some componets may have been produced in other countries.

Oh man, I would love to play around with a KDS-20, but I'm really out of space.......

*sssssssiiiiiiigggggghhhhh*

Let me see what I can do about space.....

Thanks for the generous offer! I'd love to have a nice, but "used" Kitchenaid as a daily driver. My KDS-19 (thanks RCD!) is so darn minty, that I literally tip toe around it anytime I even get near the machine. I get paranoid about minty porcelain and racks being chipped if anyone but me even opens the door. Yes, I know, I'm weird......

Tom,
Sorry. I really worded that wrong. I know Whirlpools are still made here. I should have said,"A lot of other companies are companies are sending production out of the country". Poor phrasing.

Brandon,
Yeah, I know what you mean. My sister's is so rusty, the silverware basket is about to fall through.
Oh, thanks for the compliment on my Maytag washer a few weeks ago. It's going strong and sounds brand new.

OK Dan, shoot me an e-mail when you've got room and we'll make arrangements. And trust me, I'll give you a nudge if I don't hear from you!

Remember, this is the one that doesn't want to drain, but it's not the drain solenoid at fault. Experts here have advised it's probably something simple. It's all there, and in nice shape.

I'll get pix of it to you if you like.

Ben and I saw that d/w at the store Saturday afternoon too, it was a KUDS-22 or 23.

That KitchenAid ought to be good. It's got two wash arms. It looks similar to my Custom 21. The difference being the 21 has a timer knob on the left side. It works great.

I keep seeing pictures of Dial-A-Matics here and there, and now I kind of want one. They're neat looking.

I passed up a Dial-a-Matic at Salvation Army recently. Interestingly, the Constellation that was there next to it disappeared first.

They were both well-used and without attachments, in the beige/orange two tone scheme.

I'm not a vacuum collector so unless I know somebody is looking for a particular item, I pass it by.
