Is Whirlpool no longer making direct drive Cabrio/Bravo with direct drive inverter operation? If true, wasn't that short lived? I thought D/D was all the rage. F&P having been successfully using it for years. Now The VMW drive technology is being introduced. Is that out yet and what is the predicted reliability? I've seen a service manual and it does look easy to service, but the splutch pulley, cam and shifter are all plastic. So is the water plate now gear operated and the motor no longer reversing to provide agitation? Still invertr controlled? Also it doesn't appear to use water spray recirculation? Cost seems pretty hefty. What are your thoughts?

The VMW and SmartDrive designs are both being currently being produced. VMW is used now on "lower-end" machines and is an in-progress replacement for the direct-drive/tranny agitator line. The upper-end Cabrio/Bravos models (Vantage, anyone?) are SmartDrive.

I was in Lowes earlier today and noticed the direct drive Maytag models are gone. They have 2 new models that look almost the same as the direct drive Centenial machines. Same control panel, knobs and cabinet except what used to be the timer is now a selector dail and has 5 or 6 status lights underneath. The $399 machine had a porcelain tub and agitator. Again when you lift the lid it almost looks the same as the old DD machines but you can see the new lid/latch mechanism and the top tub ring is different. The $499 machine had a SS tub and a wash plate. I think they where rated at 3.3 cu ft and 4.3 cu. ft. I checked and these models are not on Maytag's or Lowes website.

Were both machines Centennial design or was the stainlees/wash plate the Cabrio design? Did you happen to get the model numbers?

I saw a Maytag in Lowe's today (traditional auger agitator), but the basket floated around like a Cabrio. In Industrial looking font proclaimed the new "5 ribbed belt" for greater reliability. Hmmmm....history repeating.

I also saw the $4,000 WP Vantage. Felt really cheap--the PlastiChrome covering on the dispensers were already flaking off! The front had a big scratch on the paint and into the dryer window. You'd think $4,000 would get some porcelain enamel. :( I wasn't impressed.

A little off topic, but has anyone had experience with the LG wave technology either front load or top load? How is the top load wave wash system different than Cabrio, Bravos or GE Profile with wash plate? Also does true balance really work?

The Kenmore 800 in the linked video above is not a VMW mechanism.  It's a standard direct-drive machine with the automatic water level feature.

I did see the wash plate Cenennials at Lowes tody myself. These might be of the MVW drive system. Model #'s MVWX700XW, MVWX600, 500 400 are the Bravos with this new drive. Anyone know the reliability or are they too new to know that yet?

Haier M/N GWT950AW. This machine looks awesome. The best of wash plate agitator and front load tumble I've ever seen. Check it out on you tube. And the price is very reasonable. I only knew Haier as a portable machine manufacturer, Well this is definitly full size and definitly a great wash system.
