Hey guys -

Ran across a Maytag sales brochure I had not seen before today, and thought it would be fun to share. New Maytags for 1954!

Really digging these early Maytags!

"presenting the MAYTAG automatic washers"

The Customatics!

Thank God for the automatic protection for curious youngsters! We certainly don't want them growing up loving washing machines.

Fantastic chair and folding table.

The non-subjective graph compares water usage of Maytags to 'other washers'.

How Does it Know

When Maytag stopped using the aluminum float in the agitator to trip the water fill switch how did the next design work? Because of the rubber bellows under the next generation agitator cap it touches the lid full or empty.

Didn't the AMP at some point have the Water Level Selector in the Lid Handle ?

What's in a handle?

swestoyz's profile picture
Eddie, yep - two models of the original cabinet AMP's did have a method to control water level. On the A2MP and A3MP, the user would find a small handle inside the lid handle. Casted into the handle are the water level positions "Low, Medium, Normal." You'd slide the lever to the appropriate position for the wash.

The original AMP would fill a complete tub, and the A4MP and 121P were timed fill machines with wringer post agitators.

Kelly - the AMP was the only Maytag to have the float can. I suspect it is actually a chrome-dipped, very thin gauge copper float. Starting with the water level control machines, the agitator was slighted modified to house the rubber diaphragm inside the agitator which would push up on the cap during fill as pressure would build inside the agitator.

Hey Darren - I'm working on a small research project to try and document as much as I can on the early Maytag dryers (pre-HOH). I'll post the results sometime soon here on AW.
