Well hello from the basement everyone.

I started re operating my 1958 Westinghouse Washer tonight.
Below you can see it on its side like the service manual recommends and the bottom ,top,& front service panels have been removed and the motor and pump assembly have been taken out as a unit for reoperation.

Even though it runs very smooth after 45 years of daily use
any machine will run into problems sooner than later, so I always like to head them off with a good cleaning/removal of all old lubricants and a new relube with more modern stable lubes.
Any lubricant from the 1950's will have turned to varnish by now so even if your machine sounds great it really isn't working at its peak capacity.

As you can see in the up coming photos the motor vents were completely blocked by a mixture of coal dust + lint + kitchen grease. That would be enough to block the cooling airflow and make the motor run hotter than it should thus shortnening its life.
Also I got in there and cleaned off the motor start switch which had enough coal grease around it to start shorting to the motor frame.
Also the motor bearings were running almost dry so they got a good soaking in TuFOil which is a super lubricant, that actually adhears to the metal surfaces and is used in jet aircraft it performs so well. Many is the original bearing I have brought back to life with TufOil!

The Pump appears in good shape BUT when I opened the service panel someone had placed a pie plate below the pump so there must have been some kind of small leak at some point.
Unfortunately I can't think of away to test this pump without putting it back into the machine. But it will get a thorough going over and new seals before I put it back in. I do have a new one in stock but I would prefer to use the original equipment as Robert and Greg are very hard judges and they are always peeking under my service panels!!!

Here is a close up of the motor vents

jetcone's profile picture
They are really clogged so the motor fan has not been pulling in the proper volume of air to cool the motor.

Grease Coal Dust have turned to hard varnish

jetcone's profile picture
They are so hardened that the moveable nylon pulley on the spin drive has trouble sliding up and down the motor shaft , once I got all the old "varnish" off a put new lubricant on the spin pulley now floats back and forth just like it did in 1958.

The Outer tub

and other components are in fine shape which just testifies to the fact that this was a kitchen machine which is the BEST place for a washing machine IMHO.

The Birthday Boy

jetcone's profile picture
Was alittle bored tonight on his birthday because daddy was down in the basement all night playing and not up on the couch petting him during Stargate SG-1, as we usually are on Fridays.

Poor birthday boy!

Oh Jon,
Fun! Fun! Fun!
Do go on!
I don't blame you for going through it with such detail!
It is a beautiful set, and can last you for so, so many years before you have to do this all again.
Can't wait to see all the pictures of your progress.
I am happy that you are being so kind to this machine!
The set is wonderful!
Brent

That is such a cute, and sweet picture.
He looks pissed at you!
Give Al a big Birthday kiss for me!
How old he is now Jon? 4 years?

Well, top priority is HAPPY BIRTHDAY AL!!! You do look quite disgruntled with dad, you have every right to be. I"m sure Dad will make it up to you.

Now, on to the washer. It's still heart-warming to know this machine is in your talented, thoughtful, thorough hands. But oye, it was still a bit traumatic for me to see her lying on her side in surgery. I'll buck up and eagerly wait for more pics.

Bob

Congrats Jon...I know you'll get her running beautifully in no time!! The pre Potato-Pulley design sure is interesting! At least the coal dust protected the components...revealing the shiny new finish underneath! But I can only imagine what that thick layer of coal dust would have done to a Unimatic's fan...oh no!

Happy 12th Birthday Aloysius...one day before me! Hopefully Dad got you something nice...a sweatshirt perhaps? Or a jar of bacon bits for a snack and a cake? ;-)

Ohh the Westinghouse 3-Belt'r looks fabulous! I can't quite see it but does it have the donut "mutli-speed wash action" pulley on it?

Now get upstairs and give Al a peice of cake!

Bored on his birthday!! Can it get any worse? I'd better come over next year!

Ofcourse we need a video of this machine when it's finished. I'm wondering too about the pulley, I don't think I have ever seen one with it. Or am I mistaken?

Hi Jon & Al

Great work...finally get to see what the inside of Adam Faiths machine was over here...

What are the double pulleys for?? wash and spin?? which is which???

Is that the spin brake on the top pulley or a solonoid??

I`m freaking at it lyin down without woolley blankets all around it...LOL

The more I see of this machine the more I think Hoover used the design for the slope front keymatic, adding a pulsator meant it was different from Westinghouse and avoiding Patents from Bendix etc..

AND FOR AL, I think we need to bring Ella over with us to cheer him up, now go and give him a big cuddle from all over here.

Cheers

Mike

Oh Ella

jetcone's profile picture
Oh she is a DEAR! Bring her over AL would love her! Everybody this is Mike & TY's baby -- Ella. When she drinks water they have to napkin her moustache as she would leave a trail of drips all over the house. She has the cutest bed right beside the fireplace and next to the kitchen.

Louis get over here ASAP! Thank you everybody for the wishes for AL, he gets a hamburger cake today and spent the whole day with daddy at work yesterday.

Mike there are cardboard supports under that cabinet the paint on these machines still has its glow coat so I am being very careful with them. Yes this is a two pulley drive the outer pulley is the spin pulley the inner one is the wash. The machine has the round pulley not the potato pulley, I will photo it for you today.
I have a potato pulley macihine I got from the same owners sitting out in the driveway that machine has the famous flat-flush door but it is in rough shape it will need alot more work.

Hamburger!

Jet! How's about a chuck roast or something! Stick it in the crockpot so he'll have it tonight! Poor lonely Al!
This was Marley's B-day last year. I think Bud the kitty was a little bit jealous!

Happy birthday Al!! Wasn't it nice of daddy to buy you your very own Westinghouse washer and dryer??

Good work Jon - these are going to be MINT when you're done! Maybe I'll have to send my "laundry helper" out to run the first load with you!

Oh Bethann

jetcone's profile picture
I love the steak cake! Marley looks like he doesn't know what to do! Now you've given me ideas for next time.

Well like I thought the pump leaks and it has a bad pulley drive that engages the drive wheel on the motor. I have a gemline knockoff in stock so I will replace it today and spend the winter trying to cobble together an original westinghouse pump.
I would like this machine to be totally original when it is complete.
Anyone out there have a spare westinghouse pump drive wheel?

Jet

PS the oil staining pattern on the inside of the cabinet could be sign of trouble, no?

Bethann: Nice pic. Good for you keeping your man's face a mystery. LOL

Y know the oil stain had me concerned but...

jetcone's profile picture
The oil staining cleaned right up butI can't seem to find where it came from. The pulleys had been lubricated in the past by the owner so I am guessing that was the source since there is no transmission filled with oil.

However the belts are free of any oil or grease so it would have to have been flung off the pulleys. The pulleys really look clean too.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...............

Post# 80682 , Reply# 23   8/28/2005 at 15:02 (6,808 days old) by westytoploader ()

Sounds like everything is going good! Could a Potato-Pulley be adapted for this machine to provide the "Multi-Speed Wash Action", or do you have to use the round pulley for this 3-belt design?

Interesting that they had another Westinghouse as well! Was the "flat-flush" door the side opening version from '63-64 or so?

Jon who knows, but maybe belts were squeeking and the owner sprayed them with some drive belt conditioner?

Thats what I was guessing but now it seems the belts are new and very dry. The hubs of all the pulleys look like they have been lubricated liberally in the past but the hubs don't turn fast enough to fling grease.

I put a new pump in tonight so she is already for her virgin load!!

I want to pass on some smarts on shipping these machines for the club:
The sellers were mechanics and had a garage for truck repair so they are pretty knowledgeable about machinery.
I was awestruck to find they had taken a precaution to protect the mechanism during moving which also protects the boot on these machines.
It is really is quite simple and quick and effective, they bolted a block of wood in under where the orignal rubber shipping bumper was located.

This was enough to brace the mechanism agianst all movement, and I have been able to tip the unit over on its side several times with practically no movement of the tub!

Take a peek at the pix below its a great way to send your machines off to the movies and not get a ripped boot in the process!!

Austin-- gnawty boy! A potato pulley in a 1950's machine!
Yes the machine I have is from 1964 and the door swings sidewise.

Hey Frontload

jetcone's profile picture
There has been a delay in the virgin load! I had to keep the space open by my Lady Kenmore Combo in order to repair the exploded spray solenoid that died last week. Smoke for days came whirling up through cabinet when that thing went up!

So the lovely Westy will have to wait another week for its virgin load but I will post pics for the club as soon as it goes through. Its running nice and smooth too! That lube job was the thing to do!

Cheers
Jet

Jon,
That is so interesting about your LK Combo...
I thought you gave up on her awhile back.
Please....Start another thread on her.
I love the Lady Kenmore Combo's. I am so glad that you did not give up on her.
Did you rebuild her?
Do tell.....
I am sure it could be another thread.....

Hey Jon, Like Brent I too thought that you had given up on the Lady Kenmore Combo. So glad that you didn't. They are such neat machines. Would love to see more pictures of it. I bet that was a scary thing when the spray solenoid went out. Keep us posted. Terry
