Hi all,

I own a Neptune MAH8700 washer. I have two problems I think with mine. The first, The washer makes a pinging noise as the load begins to spin then it tapers off, but when the load reverses the pinging is back. The second problem, theload looks clean but I can still smell odors in the clothes, I don't think that the washer has enough water how do I increase it?

Clothes Smell?

Hey Rob-

Finally, someone else has the new Maytag! I bought mine about a month ago and had to have a service call right away as a metal plate was vibrating whenever the water pump would kick in.

Regarding your pinging, that sounds like you will need to have a service call.

Now about the smells, specifically are the smells detergent smells or a musty smell? This machine does use less water than older FL. I use to have the Frigidaire FL and it used quite a bit more water than this machine. If you are not happy with the way your clothes are coming out, you should try using the "Super Wash" setting. Make certain that the prewash and extra rinse options are engaged. You're looking at about two hours here, but when your clothes come out, they should be totally clean and smell free.

Another option is to do a regular wash and then follow it up with the quick wash. The quick wash takes only like 30 minutes. It is my observation that it seems to use quite a bit more water.

Another consideration is to ascertain if the smell is a detergent smell. If so, you might want to use less detergent or switch to one of the "no perfume" detergents. Costco carries one now and I have heard that Tide has one also.

Let me ask you this about your machine, does it spin ok with smaller loads? Mine has a fit if the load is a small one. When it goes into the fast spin, it really rattles and takes on until it gets to the fastest spin, then it settles down.

Also do you find the noise of the water pump excessive? My rattle has stopped, but the water pump still seems loud to me.

speaking of water pumps...

It used to be that long horizontal or vertical runs of the drain hose would cause water to flow back into the machine after pumping stopped.

With a (long) horizontal hose the water in it gets stangnant and stale, and the machine re-fills with yuckies.

Aa check-valve helps in these situations, but are prone to clogging.

Just a thought and hope this helps.

musty smell with ping or ting noise

Thanks for responding.

The smell is a musty smell right in the arm pit areas of my shirts. I get this smell even after using the Superwash, Presoak,Extra rinse modes. The ping or tinging noise is aways there when the load begins to spin or reverse.

Is there a way to increase the water level?

Water Level Not Subject to Setting

I have seen others discuss this topic, trying to adjust a front load machine so the water level is higher. The general consensus seems to be that the water level in front loaders are not subject to setting. They are designed to be super efficient (read use must less water). The new top-of-the line Kenmore front loader has a special setting, something like skin care that will give a really wet rinse I am told.

The new Maytag Neptune does not have this setting. However, and this is something you will need to try for yourself, the Quick Laundry setting seems to be much wetter than the other wash cycles. That is my observation, but then again when I did my "Quick" washing, it was only a few items. So I can't be certain if the extra wet look of this washing was due to the setting or to the fact that I was washing just a few clothes!

I really fault the Neptune manual in that it provides so very little information! For instance, it spells out that these are the wash cycles, and then it lists them with just a bare description of when you would want to use them. It doesn't tell you how the wash settings differ from one another.

Another MIA piece of information is how the internal water heater is utilized. In fact, the manual never directly mentions that the machine has an internal water heater! It does mention that some water temp setting are ATC, but no mention of whether the temperature control is done with the internal water heater or through mixing the Hot and Cold waters. It doesn't mention any temperature level for hot and hot is not marked as ATC. I would presume (and hope) that the hot setting utlizes the internal heater, but no way to tell from reading the manual. I addressed this issue with the repairman when he reported and he told me that although they learned how to tear the machine apart, they never learned why and how the machine operates.

Any case, back to your issue, I am certain the ping issues merits a service call. When the repairman comes out to fix the ping issue, you can bring up about the musty smell issue. You can ask him to determine if the water level is at the correct level. I think that will be your only hope to have something done about the water level. Frankly, however, I am afraid even the repairman wouldn't be able to reset the water level, but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

My best advise is to get a call in for service right away. Good luck. Please post back and let us know how it turns out!

If the armpits of the shirts have an odor after washing, the combination of anti-perspirant, perspiration and body oils is not washing out. It can be a real problem. I solved it when I started using Sodium tripolyphosphate or STPP which is in some water conditioners in certain parts of the country. If you find a package of Calgon or similar product, check to see if it contains phosphates. There might be a code with a legend elsewhere on the box. If you can't find it locally, you can order it from the Chemistry Store in Florida. Before you try all of that, if the shirts are white, use the hotest water you can (turn the water heater up to hot, if you can)& use Tide HE or something that does not suds up when used in the fullest quantity for your machine and water conditions, but you have to use a really good detergent to deal with this. If this does not work for WHITE shirts, you can augment your detergent with Oxy whatever and/or diswasher detergent that has phosphates, but DO NOT USE ANY LEMON-SMELLING DW DETERGENT!! They can turn things yellow. Also, get in the habit of adding a quarter to a half cup of borax with these shirt loads, depending on the load size. Borax will really remove odors and keep things from getting smelly underarm areas while you wear them. Best of luck. Keep us posted.

Can borax be used with chlorine bleach?

Great tip about lemon scent DW detergent, BTW! Tks.

Neptune MAH8700 washer is my load really clean and what'

OK all,

I called Maytag and they give me the number to a local repairman. I called the number and 2 days later a repairman/ Representative came out. He told me that the water looked a little low and said that he would have to call Maytag to find out what the level should be. This guy never called me back after waiting 3 days I called his office and was told that the service call repairman/ representative said that the washer was working correctly.

I called Maytag again and was told that I would have to call the place of purchase (Home Depot) to resolve the problem. Home Depot guys are great. They said that I had to be happy with the machine or they would exchange it, refund it or send one of their representatives out to take a look at the machine. I chose for the representative to come out. He came out the very next day. After looking at the machine in operation he determined that the ping was normal and that an adjustment in the rear of the machine was needed to increase the level of the water. He did the adjustment and the water lever was increased.
Bottom line my wife is happy again and the smell is gone.

Thanks to Home Depot

-Rob

How high is your water level in the Neptune MAH8700. Mine is now just above the ribs in the tube. How high is yours....

Good Service From The Big Box

Bushmaster-

Glad to hear you have your issue resolved. Also glad to hear that Home Depot did right by you, allowing you the option to either have another service call or to return the machine.

I just had the same experience with Lowes. I had two service calls on my Neptune 8700 and the issue was still not resolved. I turned to Lowes and stated I had lost confidence with machine. They gave me the option of either sticking with the machine or exchanging for another model of machine. I opted to return the Neptune and paying the difference to get the Kitchenaid FL.

They special ordered the Kitchenaid for me and they estimated it would take until the end of the month to come in. Luck was on my side and it will be delivered to me Monday (and they will take away the Neptune).

Its great that the Big Boxes will allow you the option of exchanging the machine if you are not satisfied. Something tells me that this probably extends only for within a month of purchase.

Rich, you wrote: Its great that the Big Boxes will allow you the option of exchanging the machine if you are not satisfied. Something tells me that this probably extends only for within a month of purchase.

That’s probable true except for Sears. Sears always seem to go the extra mile when it comes to making sure someone is satisfied. One example is when I bought a dryer from Sears and 6 months later bought the matching washer, (Calypso) and when the washer failed and I returned it; Sears also let me return the dryer which was 7 months old and put the full purchase price towards the new matching set (Neptunes w/ the touch screen). No one stands behind their products, and cares about their customer’s satisfaction more than Sears!
