To save this one from Capital Punishment?

Post# 472816 , Reply# 1   11/1/2010 at 12:58 (4,896 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

It was given a stay of execution by a family member->but was so ungrateful as to have fits every other time it was used. "LD" this and that, etc. If someone does happen to have a heart for this machine, the time is ticking! Otherwise the Death Sentence is Death by HIGH VOLTAGE, followed by being flogged and humiliated with a sledge hammer. The Sentence will be carried out 11-13-10. If anyone wants this machine SPEAK UP!!! I will only accept emails, as I do not check this site very often. Put Calypso in the subject line.

I don't understand-what is the condemned washers crime?Looks like a nice machine.Too bad I am not closer.

Tolivac: This machine has been charged with randomly throwing errors during mid cycle, when nothing wrong with the machine. When I throws "LD" error, you have to start the cycle all over again. It usually does this when you actually load the machine. This machine really does not clean the clothes, as the Commercial Neptune that I finished fixing on Friday does a much better job at cleaning the clothes and it has yet to throw mom an error! I can also custom make programs for the Neptune.

So far the machine will have its last wash 11-13-10 at 10AM-> then the fun will begin!

If I'm not mistaken....

The "LD" error code means "Long Drain". Have you tried checking the drain hose, drain pump, etc for see if it's clogged, blocked or restricted in any way?

That does look like a nice machine and in pretty good condition. I have an older WP version but I would be interested in it if I were closer too!

So far no one has given this machine a pardon. I may consider parts requests IF it is not too much work to remove them. Pardon gets first priority.

I can see with electronic controlled machines the dropping out in cycles can be annoying.Thats where I like mechanical timer machines better. But if the "LD" error code means long drain-would it be worth it to check the drain system in the machine before execution? For me its always a bummer-the machines offered here at far away for me-my area is turning into a "dead zone"the area where I live isn't very old-and no basements-so older machines seldom turn up.I did see a Calypso machine in one of the swap shops once out here-but it was a "kluge"-a black washer body wedded to a WHITE washer control panel-guess the swap shop operator was merely making a usable-saleable machine from two duds.

As RevvinKevin says, LD is "long drain" ... a drain period has been running for longer than 5 mins and the water level pressure switch has not reset.  If the machine really isn't draining, then there's a problem with the pump or an obstruction in the tub sump or drain hose.  If it has fully drained and the pressure switch failed to reset, then the switch is stuck, or the pressure tube or air dome is obstructed ... however, such a situation should theoretically also cause an overfill and FL error.

The entire cycle doesn't have to be restarted. The first drain period doesn't occur until after wash is complete, so a Rinse/Spin can be run to finish the load if normal-speed action is acceptable.

I'd take the machine for sure if it was within fetching distance.  I have a stash of spare parts, including two pumps and two sets of control boards.

How well do these Calypsos clean? Do they use an adequate amount of water? Could you wash a comforter in one of these and get decent turnover?

Retropia,

Others will argue to the contrary, but in my experience using a Calypso for the past 2+ years, it cleans and rinses quite nicely.

Yes, they use an adequate amount of water per the design of the machine.  Apparently you're not familiar with how Calypsos work.  The tub never fills with water, the water level is always below the wash plate.  Throughout the wash period and for most of the rinses, the pump circulates a shower of water over the clothes while the wash plate bounces the load or the basket rotates at 60 RPM.

As for rollover, it depends on what's being washed and which cycle is used.  The less aggressive cycles - Delicate/Casual, Wool, Handwash - aren't intended to have much rollover, they do more spin-wash than bounce-wash.  The designated Bulky cycle is moderate, there may not be much rollover, but the item should get jostled enough to flex the fibers/fabric.  The quilts, spreads, & comforters I've run have done fine.

If you'd like to see how they work, I have posted on YouTube a full Normal cycle (in 5 parts) running a set of sheets.

Thanks DADoES for the videos, that was interesting. The impeller action is pretty vigorous.

Aggressiveness of the action depends on the selected cycle.  Nutation speed ranges from 300 "wobbles" per minute on Heavy Duty to 150 on Wool and Handwash (which just jiggles the items a little instead of rolling them over).  Normal in the videos runs at 275.

I think Whirlpool didn't give this one a chance. I like it. They just had to get the kinks out. Wish they would bring it back.
