Yet another trip out in the car (638 mile round trip this time)
Most of it going back to my home county luvlee sunee klasseee Essex :-) So what made me drive that far...........well a rather nice Hoover computer logic dryer was part of it, picked that up in Crawley, it is the matching model to the A3974 computer logic washing machine i got a few months ago. And then onto wickford in darkest Essex...... |

full on
There are some issues with this machine, normal age related ones i would think, as mentioned i have already changed the pump and the tub outlet hose, i also replaced the nice old black door boot seal as it had turned to black sticky crusty goo, i have tried it out and it sort of works but until i can get some more little jobs done i cannot test it properly. It has a bit of history, the lad who called me had been left his nans house which is where this came from, the house is an absolute time warp inside, utterly brilliant.....all the furniture, carpets, rugs, ornaments, massive bar in the corner of the living room, beautiful old radio gram......christ i could have stayed there and just gazed at it all day So i will report back in time as regards this machine, it is to date the oldest Keymatic i have, about 1966 I think, it is also built like a tank and in some ways could be more challenging to repair than later ones. To hear the programmer clunk and whirr as it progresses is pure magic, plus the motor is not electronically controlled but uses a clutch mechansim for the spin, this leaves you in doubt that you are using a MACHINE ;-) It came with its two keyplates and the lid for the top mounted soap draw |

Thanks Paul
Im fuggin nackered after all the driving matey :-).......but yea these things are still about it is so comforting to find them.......so it is a 68 model (only 8 years younger than me). I think cleaning will be ok, it has a nice layer of kitchen grease all over it, and as we know that is a good thing as it protects the cabinet :-) I am pleased to bits with the dryer and cant wait to try it out, maybe this weekend as you know i have two visitors here so that will fun :-) squeezed into the garage Well you have an interesting collecion to make this weekend yourself which will deserve a section on its own :-).........always nice to get the unexpected...........so enjoy getting that and mind your back matey they are heavy :-) Gary |

Gary, Congratulation on your new finds. The 1968 Keymatic looks great and is in good condition for its age. Hope you will post some videos of her when she is up and running. Paul |

well just to finish off this week i picked up a Hoover Logic 1100 at work today, not very good condition but good for parts, so 3 oovahs in one week not bad.
AL Thanks for that matey, how many fuggin more ave i got to get.......i tell you my head spins with it all, these things we love can kill us aswell me thinks ;-) JAMES Stick at it mate, as you can see stuff comes up keep your wanted ads running, yes Paul will have a nice surprise for us this weekend Paul I will do vids of this machine and the others at some point in time, as these machines come in they push others to the back of the "to Do"list one poor sod still waiting is the Hoover Topline Toploader which Mike got for me and Neils Spa took time and trouble to do up so it looks good. I might if i have time have another fiddle with the keymatic tomorrow as the weekend will be busy Speak later Gary |

Just a thought James keep your adverst running all year, i hate to say this but the winter can mean the end for some elderly people and their goods........and winter also can mean the end for hard working machines, in my experience at work i have often found the onset of winter brings in more tumble dryers as they are put back into use
Just a thought James Gary |

Not a bad haul for a few days work...and yes they do keepeth coming!!!, my 3203 surfaced two days before Christmas and he wanted it picking up two days before New Year..nightmare!! what we do for these machines!!!
The dryer looks a great colour match with the plastic colour will look good side to side and stacked, the Keymatic is in great nic unlike the one I picked up and looked great from the back where it had been stored for 40yrs under the worktop but had had 40 yrs of tea dribbles and sink slops dripped over the front!!! Its currently with Mark in Kings Lynn having the clutch renovated and the motor mounting bracket spot welded with a patch for the hole etc.... Then on to the Spar of Bob & Neil.. Look forward to seeing you and the new treasures and picking up the two new ones with Mathew on the way, gonna be a busy weekend, we`ll need those Cornish Pasties...LOl |

Is the Keymatic the one that uses 'key cards' to program the cycle? If so, can I ask how that works as I have not seen one here. Also, are these keycards 'changeable' or do you need a card for each different cycle with different options? Otherwise, congrats on the new machine. Always nice to see a rescue find the proper home!

Perhaps this will answer your question. The card has 8 different programs, 4 on each side. At the bottom of the card on the left it says "Special Treatments", the bottom of the card on the right says "(mumble mumble) light soil". Does this help answer your question Drew? OK, I have the card, now I just the a machine the card will work in! LOL Kevin |

All the models of keplates have different readers and the corresponding slots for the programmes can be different as well, heres a link to the previous posts, we have done links on keyplates but not all the reders / timers etc..
Currently down south on another Keymatic jaunt, will do a thread for readers when we get back?? Kevin, keep those keyplates safe they are quite rare & fragile!!! CLICK HERE TO GO TO chestermikeuk's LINK |

I love em, one set of lights i have the bases are made of metal and if you move them too much you get a loveley tingle off them, just the thing for nosey kids! Old lights bring them on :-) |

Fist the Tumble dryer, a quick service and it works beautifully possibley the best dryer i have used, the full auto sense feature works perfectly i dried 3 loads in it and they all came out uncreased and dried to perfection, this is one machine i am glad to have paid what i did for.
The Keymatic ahhh hmm where to begin.................. 1st Leaks from just about every place it is possible to leak from, some were easy and some where an absolute F**kin Swine the worst to do being the front of the tub which is full of concrete, this had rusted at the base and was dripping water onto the thermostat near it (one blown fuse), getting it off was easy, cleaning it up and de-rust treatment folowed by huge amount of gaskett maker was easy aswell, but getting it back in place whilst trying to get the securing clamp back on aswell was a job i dont want to do on my own again, a few cups of tea, 20 fags and a load of choice words got it back on. The rim that holds the door rubber on has also rusted so that had to be carefully cleaned up de-rusted. The water level pressure switches were playing up so it would over fill, the main problem being the pressure hose and one of the switches had an air leak The water inlet hoses to the soap draw were perished so again they were pouring water every where In the meantime Mat from Cardiff emailed me some wiring diagrams and a program flow chart so i could make some sense of the wiring and the programing (thanks Mat) The machine started to work today but it popped another fuse whilst heating, the mains plug went black, on inspection the mains cable insulation had dried up and had crumbled to dust, so another cable was fitted So to date I have now done a complete pre-wash without any of the afore mentioned problems...........thats an achievement after the 3 days i have spent tinkering and fiddling and fixing it :-) and there is still loads to do This machine has been a complete learning curve compared to the later automatics by Hoover, it is a fascinating machine in its mechanical complexity and i am sure once all is sorted will be an excellent machine I have attached a few pix of todays repair to the tub front and see how filthy the machine is now......... |

Once it has finished the main wash it then fills to high level before pumping out and going into the 4 high level rinse cycles, it has no compartment for fabric conditioner so you either add that to the last rinse or let it run throughand then select the "special treatments" programme and add the conditioner that way

after all that you get a 20 second spin !!!!, if you want a more intense spin you select the "Spin" program and you get a 4 minute spin.
This short spin is common to all the low temperature prgrammes (thanks again to Mat for his help), whereas the 60o coloured program ahs a 4 minute spin built in, how times and programs have changed Also this machine and the 3243H keymatic do not "top up" with water once they have filled, admittedly they do take in a lot of water anyway but these two machines are unique in my collection for this There are still a load of jobs to do on this machine, but i have now gotten itto a stage where it is basically working, it has been the hardest and most trying out of all my machines to get back to running but it is also the most fascinating to use and watch due to its totally mechanical operation |

Great work, new air lines and water pipes, fantastic and it’s most rewarding for you seeing the machine work without washing the garage floor as well.
Well I’m obsessive as well; I have tested the water temperature on my machines, by opening the door mid cycle or by placing the thermometer under the flow of the wash pump out so long as the machine dose not have a detergent dilution stage at the end of the wash. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing your skills with us. Lee |

Sod the Araldite get some.............EVO STICK!!!!!!!!!!!, or paint the inside of a washing machine tub with Hammerite that made me go very giddy and blurry eyed ;-)........ I wont make jokes about not smoking coz i know how hard it is, and your comments on another thread make absolute sense.....good luck Ps put chocolate spread on the steering wheel it tastes nicer Paul Just tinnker matey, all the machines we collect are mass produced so therefore they have to go together quickly and easily, aside a few special tools you might need (a 5Lb club Hammer is my favourite) they are logically assembled and come apart easily. There endeth my one and only lesson |

Good you`ve really gotten to grips with this big bertha havnt you!!!...at least you have stuff that you can sort on yours...the one I picked up from Swansea had been looked after well (internally / mechanically) by the previous owner, new belts, boots pipes etc...but had suffered rusting from the tub / motor mount bracket...its currently having a patch and arc weld done by Mark etc along with the clutch overhauled...then all I need is to buy shares in Halfords Paints etc...Lol
It was good to hear it spin for the first time, soooo quiet!!! and straight up there no faffing about!! Happy Washing, Mike p.s. what is it with those pressure pots & piping, had a call from Dad on sat morn to say the quartz had overfilled & flooded the kitchen...so whipped the back off & diagnosed cracks in the hose to pressure switch, which had just enough slack to cut and stick back on to the pot, and also the pipe from the pressure pot to tub had a pinhole of wear in it, course everything in storage so managed to get to the local aquarium shop and nab some rather funky dayglow green piping for the tub connection...all working fine and half load level now working a treat!!! Oh Classic machines!!! |

I’m just glad it can’t talk, it tells me off at lest twice a day with messages on the dash, You haven’t put the break on, you haven’t done your seat belt, you have left the keys in do want some chave to steal me, I have told you the washer bottle is empty two days ago and now you cants see can you, I need servicing in one week, and on and on and on. Christ it’s like an electronic back seat driver.
