I own an old washing machine 'english electric" identical to the hotpoint 1600, which I am willing to sell.

OMG

I hope it's actually a Hotpoint 1600 but it's probably a Reversomatic. I hope it goes to a good home.

James.

...errrr did English Electric do a model 1600..? Wouldn't this have been a bit close to Hotpoint, as they only launched there's in about 1969..?

OMG!!!

I'm paying anything to the person who can get this for me!!! It is most likely an export Hotpoint 1600. Pics please and maybe a video of it on spin if it works.

James!

Hey Rov,

wouldn't recommend trying to run it unless you have it checked over first, perished internal hoses and/or wiring may cause damage to the machine - or yourself!

It makes sense that this machine could well be a rebadged Hotpoint, we know they rebadged appliances for other export markets, and I wonder if the EE name was chosen as it was better recognised internationally, due to their other, larger products - railway locos, planes, guided weapons(!) etc. Or maybe it was a badge-engineered version to replace the Reversomatics. Who knows!

Seeing the pictures should clear matters up, almost hope it isn't a 1600, cos it'd be quite a trek to collect the old girl if someone wants it...

Si

Export rebrand is likely, but English Electric seems odd

Hi all

Simon is right, this could well be a re-brand of the 1600, certainly 1970 seems the correct era. The English Electric moniker is odd though - for licence reasons, 1960s AEI-Hotpoints were exported as Gala, though this was dropped for Ireland at least in the 70s. Perhaps this changed when AEI was subsumed by GEC?

If this is a rebadged Hotpoint 1600, the English Electric name was probably used because the Hotpoint licence didn't cover Greece (assuming this machine actually originated there) and Gala was probably in use for something else (or translated as something unmentionable in Greek...). Even as an export, the machine should say British Domestic Appliances on the rating plate for the 1970s

Either way an interesting find - we look forward to some pictures.

Ummm all sounds a bit iffy to me...

Well actually this is more genuine than it appears. The same person who posted this has in fact emailed me very formally but unfortunately he hasn't got back to me... He must have seen myself posting about the 1600 and contacted me. I'm quite surprised to see that nobody else got an email from him. I would really love to get this but I'd need a cheap way to get it delivered to the green isle...

James.

Now, who is offering to drive the truck??....

Fantastic!

Rov

How great and thank you so much for posting the pics - amazing find (now how many words are being eaten)!

How marvelous that one of these has survived - and it looks to be in great shape. It's interesting to see elements of the other Hotpoints of the time in the design - the timeline from the 1504 Toploader, control knob from the Supermatic (methinks) and cable and hose hooks on the back just like the 1504.

Rov - would it be possible to see more pics of the control panel please? I'm sure there will be LOTS of interest in this machine. In terms of trying it out, I would suggest you try it without water first and make sure you have an Earth-Leakage circuit breaker on the power line. I would check over the internal hoses and seals before adding water too!

So who's getting it? I'm sure it would be possible to have it shipped for not too much!

D :-)

Post# 476967 , Reply# 39   11/22/2010 at 15:10 (4,874 days old) by HooverJames ()
How much?

I really want to get this but mum fears the cost. I quote from her: "Why not get one of your new UK friends to get it for you!!!" I would pay a fair price if someone had trekked to get it for me and David would it be possible to squeeze it over? I don't mean to sound rude but I'm all new to this shipping malarky. It will have a good home over here too... I can't afford £500 for shipping. I was looking for this machine all year with ad's every direction and now its sitting right in front of me.

I doubt this one will slip to you guys... James.

How many enquries are being done regarding getting the machine transported to UK..LOL..the race is on.

My Proposal...

I've been doing a search nationally for a 1600/1830 but failed. I would pay a fair price and lovingly restore a machine of this greatness, as well as taking it to the UK occasionally to show you all. If anybody is getting the Servis Dryer can they collect this machine too for me, otherwise whoever collects this machine and brings it to the UK can I buy it off you? Please if anybody has any ideas can you email me on thejamesrankin@live.com

James.
