The second link seems to have a different issue.

This was our second dishwasher. What a let-down after our gorgeous TOL GE SU-70W:

My Mother picked this one out and it reeks of her stinginess in every way. Because she never bothered to read the manual for the first one, she never had any idea what the cycles did or, for that matter, even how to load the thing correctly. She made sure this one had NO buttons, NO bells, no whistles, nothing that would interfere with her mission to save 10 dollars. I don't understand why she even bothered to buy this thing in the first place because, as usual, she hand-washed everything before it went in.

I remember, even at age 7, being disappointed and feeling that we had been cheated because it had no start mechanism, you had to turn the lame control dial to the right manually until the motor started. Didn't even have the freakin' Power Shower but you can see in the Craigslist picture the knockout for it, even though, like on ours, it ain't there. Only pluses: blue Plastisol and it was front-loading. Don't remember whether it was noisy or not. No matter; we were all too noisy to notice.

Hey Pete! Congratulations on scoring this one; it looks like it is in lovely condition! Looking forward to seeing the up close photos!!

Ken - as always, your drawings are awesome! That GE pull-out with the multi-cycle selection is one that keeps eluding me....

EARLY 60S GE DW

Ken I love your commentary about your mothers reasons for purchasing the basic GE dw. The original roll-out GE is probably one of the few impeller machines that cleaned better than the later wash arm version. My parents house had the later [1965] and more deluxe [ power shower ] GE built-in and even with a new water softener and good hot water [ the machine was directly over the water heater ] it was the worst cleaning DW I ever used on a regular basis. Our first DW was a 1966 D&M which cleaned much better but needed repairs on at least a semiannual basis, at least the GE was never repaired, but I replaced it with an electronic WP in 1982.

Thank you John, and thank you Paul. John, CU rated the first generation of those GE front loaders in 1962 as #1, but from the next year on, they downrated them severely for the reasons you stated. I have no idea what they did right that first year, and then forgot!

Paul, you and I, as usual, are competing for the same machine, but your luck, up their in Sane-Land, is always better! The next time I see one of those anywhere in the US, I'm loading up the truck and going after it! This is my penance for allowing so many vintage gems go to the dump in my lifetime.

the reason i grabbed it is that it has the vertical mounted pump and motor like my 2 top loader mobile maids. i love that big stainless steel spray arm and those huge water jets. remember that from when i was a kid.

plus i have an extra motor and new pump seal i got from larry last year, should it ever need it. this one looks in very good shape, fellow said it had only been used a few times. so the blue plastic coated tub should still be like new.

i can always make room for another dishwasher if it's one i really like and this one caught my eye. don't have an early g.e. front loader yet but will tomorrow! as said my other 2 are top loader mobile maids but with the same pump and motor.

will post pics later this week.

thanks

pete

Don't get me wrong, Pete; if that had been in my neck of the woods I would have grabbed it. Congratulations on getting it and have fun with it. I know you have a Mobile Maid with a pink interior (the ones I covet and want to find); what's the other one?

maybe someday here i'll decide to get rid of all my collection at a very reasonable (basically cheap) price and you can have em all!

in g.e. i have that pick bowtie impeller machine, from toledo last year. a bakelite impeller machine from cleveland, 1954 i believe was it's birthday, and 2 top loader mobile maids, one coppertone, one white, one from buffalo and one from matt in grand rapids mich. and now this front loader mobile maid style pump machine. and a late 80's model pot scrubber with that whirligig spray arm.

outside of my kichenaids g.e's are my favorite. oh yea, that hotpoint from the late sixties that came from palm springs. it's got that big ufo looking pump and black spray arm like the one robert just found at an estate sale.

who knows, maybe i'll tire of them and give em all away someday. at least they are all safe with me now.
