very confusing indeed!

is it real?

Simple, dirty laundry goes in the top, gets washed, transfers to lower part, and comes out the front door clean, right??

Actually when I was in engineering school in the 1970's, this was one of those "holy grail" devices that we thought people wanted. (Along with a freezer / oven, and other improbable appliance combos.)

Let us know what you find out.

I just sent the seller an e-mail.......

revvinkevin's profile picture

......... requesting the brand name and more photos with the lids / doors open.

It's only about 40 minutes away... I could probably go take a look at it, but I would NEVER buy it at that price!

Is that the "Lost In Space" Washer with the OPTIONAL wringer?

Post# 476031 , Reply# 7   11/18/2010 at 07:36 (4,878 days old) by Tomturbomatic (Beltsville, MD)

I believe it is just a square cabinet wringer washer. It reminds me of similar machines offered for sale by Western Auto.

I believe it might be a Canadian? wringer washer, possibly a Simplicity. Hopefully our friends north of the border can clarify for us.

So the "dryer" part is a lie; or at least an exaggeration. By "washer/dryer" combo they're referring to the wringer? Oh my G*d!! A misleading description on Craiglist????!?!?

Who would've thought that someone would screw up a description on Craigslist? I thought that everyone who posts on CL has their act together, (tongue in cheek)! LMAO

The items are "drier" after going through the wringer than they were before they went through it. Some manufacturers even called the wringer the "damp dryer". I like Maytag's term "roller water remover."

I hope that the cover is of the lift-off style because having a cover of a wringer washer hinged at the rear, in front of the wringer, is stupidly poor design.

Kevin, please hurry and get the skinny on this mystery machi

mickeyd's profile picture
Over the years here, in quite few ads, we've seen non-washer people refer to the wringer as the drier. Brings a smile. Friends here have referred to the "mangle" on my beasts as driers. If you think about it, the conventionals do not actually wring clothes they way a person would normally wring out, or twist, a wet item like a face cloth. The wringer is really more a presser-outer ;-D

A cool looking machine, very minty, but the price--well that's a real wallet wringer for ya! Crazy greed.

PS and Edit: Part of the illusion/confusion stems from the fact that the front panel looks like it wants to open. Can't to see what's going on here.

I think they mean "damp dry" when they say "washer/dryer" like a twin tub is also known as a "washer/spin dryer semi-automatic". I could be wrong but I just don't see how this could be a washer dryer combination.

Yeah

Always got a kick out of the Unimatics, etc, saying "Dry" for the final spin, even though in some cases, a few items are indeed almost dry. Maybe somewhere out there, someone thinks the "Dry" setting does in fact dry the load.

I'm probably wrong but.......

Since this is in the Los Angeles area could it possibly be a prop from some movie/tv show? To me it looks like pieces of various appliances stuck together to make one. The front looks like a dishwasher and if you look closely at the front control panel in the upper left hand corner it appears to say something, but what do I know?

I did a Searchalator search and found a pic of Gambles "Coronado" wringer that looks very similar to the machine for sale on CL. So my vote is for Coronado.

No, they did make numerous semi automatic/wringer washers like this.Even Easy had one out maybe from the late 40's.

Easy never made a square full-skirted wringer or spinner.

It looks very European... The closest thing that I have ever seen like this in Canada was an Inglis with square tub (but Belanger made them,too...)

I did once see an ad for an Easy square-tub wringer washer. It may have even had a window in the lid if my memory serves correctly. But I have never seen one in person.

I think the machine that this thread is about is a Bradford, Wizard or Coronado...built by Franklin. I recall seeing these models in Western Auto many years ago when I was a boy. The lid lifts off, is not attached to the machine.

Cool machine, but $500 is a bit much. Kevin, since its in the LA-area you should offer $75 and see what they say.

obscure Citation

Covina is about 10 minutes from me. (Unless it is morning rush, then it's about an hour.)I don't need a wringer washer much either, but if someone needs a messenger, I can be available. Tom

I wonder if like me you thought the front was a door with those "handles in the middle" well it could be that the front does come open to store the wringer like some of our models did...

But also if the rotary dial is the motor on/off switch then the controls could be for agi / pump start/stop and wringer start/stop!!

Lovely machine, Kevin I`m with Rich...go get it!!! I`m sure in the tardis you can make room for a little wringer action!!

Cheers, Mike

Well, as Inspector Clouseau used to say (and it ALWAYS brought a big silly/happy grin to my Dad's face) "the CASE is SOLVE-ed!"

Kevin, I'm with you; whereas I can and will waste buckets of cash on vintage automatics and such, g-d wringers, (or, as they're called on Craigslist, "ringers") are such a waste of space and time. Wringers are so the "8-Tracks" of the vintage appliance world. Ducks, covers, runs.

I'm still mad about the time when I was 6 years old in the Hamden Sears/Roebuck store and wasted 1/2 an hour standing by that stupid machine waiting for it to spin. My blond moment.

Citation was Wizard nomenclature for their top of the line so it is of the house and lineage of Western Auto. Friends had a Wizard Citation refrigerator. Does the tub look like it's Plastisol coated?

... to go get this machine... but I have no interest, zero. Also, I am more interested in automatics. I have one Maytag E2LP wringer and that's enough, thanks!

I think they don't know whether this is a washer or a dryer, hence the 'washer/drier' listing.
