Hey guys - found this W-H SpaceMates pair for sale on Ebay. This set is in Georgia however, I think it's a bit too high on
the price. $350 for the set is too much - especially if they need any work. The washer needs a knob for the timer and who knows what else may be lurking behind the scene. Might be worth a check out if you can get the price down.

this is a newer spacemate; with 1 belt and speed contolled m

That Model #LT350RXW1 - WHITE-WESTINGHOUSE 27" washer-front load washer has the newer 1 belt setup with the Speed controlled motor. ie a non- Potato Pulley 3 belt model with the two solenoids.

This unit for sale thus must be sale late 1980's to early/mid ?? 1990's; a newer spacemates. Spacemates goes back to the mid 1950's

Both the old and new designs have the same doors; same FL rubber boot; same deflector ring; I think the same tub front.

The tub in the newer model has a different pump strainer which is round; the old is square. The basket is similar on each; but the 3 belt old model has length for the clutch spring, hub and two pulleys. ie the oval/potato pulley and round outboard
spin pulley.

The newer unit has a different pump controlled directly electrically; the older units have the solenoid which pulls the pulley attached to the long shaft/spring.

Preference

I know I may not share the same opinion as most on this site, but I prefer the 3 belt mechanism. I just like the fact that the laundry is in motion from the beginning of the wash cycle all the way till the end. What could be better for a young washer watcher?

3 belt westys

i also think the proper 3 belt westys are far cooler than the
last few years of oval windows that had frigilux motors and
pump-the 3 belt ones just sound cooler if nothing else!
A 3belt westy is high on my "get list",but i have not seen one
in years-really blew a good chance about 12yrs ago when a 2nd
hand store had a late '70s/early '80 era spacemates set in HG
was going to get the set on the weekend, but when i went to go
get it the shop had closed up and was empty...
besides that one, found an avocado one at the dump in '83 and
a dissasembled one at the dump in 1994,took the '81 dated
westinghouse motor and the pump(should have took everything
and put back together/fixed..)

THREE BELT WH FLers

combo52's profile picture
The pair for sale has an older dryer with it, its between 1978-1982. The single belt machine was a good performer but did not hold up well at all. I would agree that if you want a classic WH FL washer I would go with the three belt system. Even these were far from the reliability of the better top loading washers of the same era but they were fairly easy to do most repairs on. I just thew away a really sweet 3 belt stack model before the party in October, and we still trash several of these a year no body ever wants to come get this stuff so it just gets recycled. I am going to do some cleaning out at the warehouse in the next month I will try to post some pictures.

Combo52;

The spin and pump solenoids for the old 3 belt machines have not been in the major parts houses for about 7 years. I am sure there are pockets of dead stock in places not on the internet. If you service 3 belters, or play Ebay you might pull the solenoids before scraping the machines?.

Recently the new parts of the 3 belt machines have dropped in prices or risen too. A spare oval pulley kit with clutch spring and hub is often 135 bucks; they were more common 5 years ago and often 50 to 65 bucks brand new.

A clutch spring 5300008364 was for years about 26 bucks; recently several places have had them for 3 to 4 bucks.

The shaft 5303261165 was like crazy high 155 to 165 dollars 5 years ago; then it was 85 bucks 2 years ago ; recently they are about 35 to 40 bucks. This is the shaft that goes to the spin basket; I just got one last month. I really wanted to use a new one 4 years ago on my machine rebuild, but those prices seemed close to the token Home Depot washer for 249 bucks on sale!

The shafts 25mm part on mine where the oval potato pulley's roller bearing is worn down from 25mm/0.984 (NEW for 6205 25mm bore bearings) to about 0.976 inches. Ie 8 mils in 3 decades. This means in the spin cycle it is loud, plus the oval pulley can wobble and thus loosen up the rivets on the oval pulley. When I rebuilt the machine 4 years ago it was not as loose as today; thus maybe the shaft was locally case hardened, and I finally went through it.

The rubber boot 5303261132 old Q133321 is out of stock, no longer available at most places, but some appear again; or they pop up on Ebay as new old stock.

The deflector ring 5303261136 is less scarce. This with time will be harder to find. This is the plastic ring that goes on the tub front, called a clothes guard sometimes.

Stuff roughly in the 1970's and back as the Q part numbers, thus hunting by these old numbers too helps.

I had a real devil of a time locating a tub gasket back in 2005. All the places would backorder them; then the order would die. I finally got two of them at Cashwells.com , not via the internet. I was buying some other stuff and had them check their stock and they had some via phone.

If one does a google search in fractal way with the part numbers, one can find a few parts here and there as spares.

7 years ago repairparts carried the drive motor, and their search was keyed for the 3 and single belt models; today it is gone like they dropped the old models. They still carry the pump #75 etc, the pulley kit, the belts, water solenoid

Pumps for the 3 belt model vary all over the place in pricing. A guy on Ebay might have two and they are only 20 bucks brand new in the box, a main parts store might have one for 100 to 150 bucks. A local store for parts said they are no longer available 10 years ago! Some places like Bell have the actual impeller and seal; if one wants to do a few buck rebuild.

The solenoids are about all gone; thus before junking you might remove them and explore selling them on Ebay.

The 3 belts; ie 5303261151,3,5 are all over Ebay, the internet and at parts houses, there is massive glut! If one has a 3 belt machine and some time; one can get all 3 belts for less than 20 in a week; maybe less than 10 if one is a true Ebay hunter! There are enough belts to keep the existing machines going for another 100 years; but they will be long all rusted out by then. Thus belts are a non issue.

I shot this crummy video with my cellphone a couple years ago. The Oval potato pulley's roller bearing has a lot of play on the 25mm shaft that is worn down, thus one hears the cool crazy sound when in spin mode. It is a poor video, the sound is rather accurate. There is all sorts of crap on the washer and there is still no sheetrock up yet. The whole laundry room got 2 feet of salt water, this is post Katrina. I bought a brand new AC motor 10 years ago, it was placed on the washer in 2006 in the rebuild. The door, pump and clutch solenoids went under water but still work. The ac motor that went underwater still works too.

With the dryer from 1976 ; Post Katrina I just washed off the its motor in the tub; oiled it and it works fine. Its heater element broke 2 years later, I got a restring kit for 15 bucks off of ebay. The odd thing is it broke EXACTLY where the rebuild kit had one add an extra insulator "for added life"
This was about at the 7 or 8 oclock position .

Today I took the washer apart; the shaft 5303261165 is left hand thread. There is a gasket type rubber o-ring 5308015095 that I dug out with a razor blade and pen knife; to get pb nut plaster into the threads. This oring is between the shaft and basket; I think its purpose is to not let water into the threads. The shaft took a bit of bull to break free; pipe wrench and mini sledge few taps. The thread was not rusted at all

The post also applies to these models as well built 1989-1994 I stopped saving parts for these years ago as we must have thrown away at least 100 of these.

ENGLISH ELECTRIC LIBERATOR TUMBLE DRY 4602

Hi Folks,

This is a long-shot! I am looking for a timer for the above machine, (and door seals) which I have re-built (in duck-egg green powder coat!) and I gather it shares lineage with the Westinghouse Spacemate. If anyone can help, could you please e-mail me at:

k.runcimanannand@gmail.com

I should be most grateful.

Thank you,

Kenneth.

1956 0r 1957 Thermador Refrigerator-Freezer in Stainless

I am working with my local museum which owns two Frank Lloyd Wright homes, one with all original appliances from 1952 (but for original FL washer that was replaced with a 1971 WW model) and the other house has a mostly complete original Thermador kitchen, built in 1955. The original owner ended up trashing the fridge-freezer so there is a big hole in the paneled wall. They are looking for a replacement (does not have to work) to complete the kitchen area. If anyone has any leads or ideas on where to source one, please let me know. Mystery remains around what brand of combo washer-dryer they would have had as the utility area only has space for one machine and neighbors report that it was a combo. Thanks.
