Coldspot66 did a great favor for me today.
This wonderful crazy old woman that saw one of my Letters to the Editor a few months ago, when I was on a rant and mentioned that I collect old vintage machines, remembered the letter and contacted me about a old DM Kenmore she has. I went over and told her "I'm not a repair guy but I'll have a look." Well, I looked. Seemed to me it was from the 70's and it was only a belt. John came out today and through many under his breaths said "What the f--k an I doing here" ? But he got the job done and the Whack Job Lady was thrilled. What a hoot. 1972 DM was saved by John. New Belt, Ran Great, and it will be here after she's gone. God , I love this place. |

After John came down here today to service the Whack Job Lady, He came back to the house to see my "Museum". I hooked up the Unimatic. Ran a Load through, They chatted for awhile, and Everything is cool.
Now I think I'm going to do my Maiden Wash in the 806 and try a Video. I'll have to try to remember how to do that. LOL Thanks Guys for the Reviews. |

Corngratulations! (in honor of the harvest festival) I have the same pair in white. The dryer is great for sheets because the drum is too small to allow them to ball up. It is slower than a WP or vintage GE, though. Hope you have lots of fun with your dream machines. |

Yesterday (11/26), I washed my tablecloth from Thanksgiving and dried it in my HOH DE606. It come out so wrinkle-free that all I had to do was fold and put it back in the linen drawer. It was dried with 2 flat bed sheets, in about 40 minutes, can't beat that for speed.
Eddie, enjoy your "new" babies! Looks like Christmas came early for you this year. LOL |

Yes they are Beauties.
I'm running out of things to Wash !!! LOL The Washer : HA 806 Ser. 769638SY The HOH Dryer :HDE 806 Ser. 405342 SU I'm locating a New Belt Set today. The machine this morning was a tad bit sluggish. They are in the Laundry Room which is located right next to the Boiler so Avg. Temp...70 degrees. So I know it's not cool tranny oil. I felt the belts this morning and they feel loose, so may as well change them Right ? And IIRC, they are self tensioning. Never had to do this before. BTW... I think I'm going to be in San Diego for around 2 days before we leave. I'll call you when things are etched in stone. Wait 'till you see what I'm bringing back from New Jersey next week !!! |

Great condition pair Eddie congratulations its always great to get machines that were well cared for. Possible reasons for slow to get going agitation are 1 worn or glazed main drive belt. 2 sticking motor carriage assembly, plastic rollers broken or dry. 3 slightly tight transmission, the agitator shaft bearings often start to get tight in older MTs from lack of lubrication or because of small amounts of water seeping into the bearing area. This is the number one reason that our customers finally give up on 1970s MT washers as this can be a big repair job. If you think this is happing to your machine you can lay the washer on its back with the front panel off and position the transmission so the steel counter balance weight is down. Leaving the washer in this position for several days or more will let some oil get the agitator shaft bearing and may give it a new lease on life. When its tipped on its side turning the main drive pulley by hand will help the oil work in to the bearing. You can also tell if this is even needed by how easily the main drive pulley turns by hand but its a little hard to describe just how easily it should turn, but you should be able to turn the pulley with one finger. Good luck with these in any case they are definitely worth fixing and using.

Yes that is where I live. I've been taking care of this house for 7 years now. The owners and I have been friends for years. I have a studio apt, and they go to Florida for 7 months and come back in the Spring. It is beautiful here. 300ft of the road and we're on 6 acres of land. There are deer, all kinds of birds (Too many Wild Turkeys) and is very private and peaceful back here. A great place to hide Vintage Machines from the rest of the world.LOL.
The pic is view of the Back Woods from my Terrace.(In summer of course) |

I just got in from off Cape as I went to pick up a New Set of Belts. I'll try those first and then see what happens from there.
I recieved a phone call from RevvinKevin today and he mentioned the springs and rollers as well. Sounds like a neat trick with laying the machine on it's back. I'm going to say at this point as it did so well yesterday, It could be the belts. We'll see... Stay tuned for more. |

The Washer : HA 806 Ser. 769638SY
Born Nov, 1973 The HOH Dryer :HDE 806 Ser. 405342 SU Born Sept, 1973 I felt the belts this morning and they feel loose, so may as well change them Right? The pump belt should naturally feel kinda loose when properly adjusted. Maytag specifically designed it that way. It would definitely be a good idea to replace both belts since you don't know the history of the machine. And IIRC, they are self tensioning. The transmission belt is self-tensioned by the two motor carriage springs. The pump belt is tensioned manually by loosening the 3 bolts that hold down the pump and shifting the pump left/right in the slotted grooves for desired tension. Speaking of motor carriage springs and glides (rollers for the older machines), it would be a good idea to replace those too. Every Maytag I have acquired had very worn (original) rollers, weak springs, and were dry from the lack of poly lube, which caused erratic operation. The square glides superseded the rollers, but they're backwards compatible. |

Glad you managed to get your fave set...and in such great nic as well...love the chrome & lights...when I was tipped off about a set over here all I could think about was "Lighted Controls" but alas it was a 206 set...But having used them and listened to the Rythmic Wash of the Maytags then thats fine...
But if anybodys gotten a spare set of control panels like yours...I`ll buy them...!! Are all the Maytag gearboxes sealed then?? Do any toploader gearboxes have oil breathers where the oil will escape from if layed horizontally?? Cheers, Mike |

I'm still a Novice when it comes to the "Techy" stuff. However I'm learning more everyday. I have not noticed any "breather" device on the Maytag Trannys.
The Experts will be able to answer more questions in which I will learn more. BTW, I put on the New Belts this morning and That did the trick. As we speak, the machine is just happily washing away. HEY, WHERE IS REDCARPETDREW ??? I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING AS OF LATELY FROM HIM ON THE BOARDS. IS HE OK ??? |

Get the agitator off if you can, either with the hot water trick or an agitamer. Then clean off splined drive shaft and stem seal, wipe down, probably replace stop ring, and lubricate the area with vaseline or poly-lube. Then replace agitator. Be careful not to damage your porcelain. Sounds easy, but it might not be.

Thanks for asking, Eddie. Really! Sorry about the disappearance. As any tech will tell you, the week leading into the Thanksgiving holiday is total hell BUT I'll rant about that in the As The Tub Turns forum as not to ruin this thread about a just fantastic find! Suffice it to say that I 'went to ground' thru the weekend to decompress...
Truly beautiful machines! I can track with the lady keeping them clean. My 72 806's were in fantastic shape and the lady had her husband open the washer so she could wipe out the inside. I LOVE machines that come from loving homes like that! The only thing that is missing to make this thread perfect is to photograph the two of them with the consoles all lit up... (nudge, nudge... LOL!) RCD |

Hey Gary. The Light is Lit. I'm in New Jersey for a week now, so I won't be able to get those Night Shots Yet. Dropped off a machine at BrianL.s today but didn't meet him yet as he was at work and had to beat that awful commuter traffic on route 80. Joisey ??? Don't miss it. I showed my wife the pics you took of your new beauties, and even she was impressed at how nice they look inside and out. She couldn't believe that someone would get rid of these for something newer. She said that woman doesn't know what she got rid of, and that her new set won't last near as long. The only thing she would've preferred was that they should have been avocado.
This comes from a woman who is not that easily impressed with vintage things like I am. |

Up in the thread you mention firing up the Unimatic. Did you replace the valve or cap off the bad inlet? Just curious. |

My 56 works just like your WO. Like you, I'm perfectly content with it. After all, the choices are so limited. Hot or warm wash, and that's it! With our set-up you can get a cold rinse, and if need be, a cold warshing too, or cool or medium, an infinite temperature control. I have no plans to change it.

I never liked Harvest either. I am a fan of the old "Sunny Yellow". But now most of Yellow sets and appliances are gone, Harvest has really grown on me. I guess it's the last grasp on Yellow. Until all those Cookie Cutter Kitchens are gone.
For Example : Stainless Appliances, Granite Counter Tops, Cherry Cabinets, Hardwood or Ceramic Tile Floors, etc.etc.etc. I just cooked in my Dad's New $50,000.00 Kitchen with all Bosch Appliances... The Ovens Sucks, The Glass CookTop Sucks, and the Dishwasher is right with the First two. They have a GE Profile side by each fridge and that is Horrific too. But this day and age, You need a "Top Rack" cycle, as all that there is to wash is Glasses when it's not a Coffee to Go comtainer and your Sub Zero is filled with a weeks worth of Take Out StyroFoam |

Is that a coincidence or what ???
I don't know who would win. No we do not get alot of snow here on the Cape. Between the water and the Canal, the Canal can keep snow just the other side of the Bridge. We can get whacked once in awhile. It's always a crap shoot with the weather here. It can be raining 6 miles down the road and sunny in Barnstable. Strange. |

Eddie,
That's good. The shaft and stem seal don't look to bad from what I can see. Some WD-40 and a toothbrush would clean the shaft and seal up pretty well. Get a bunch of old rags and put around the bottom of the basket, so the WD-40 won't run down in the outer tub. Spray a little WD on there and brush it with the toothbrush. Hold a rag around the stem seal to catch the run-off. Just do a quarter at a time so the run-off doesn't get away from you. Clean the retaining washer and spring (under the splined part of the shaft). Don't try and move the retaining spring and washer, just clean the area. Clean the rubber stop ring, between the spline and the top of the stem seal. It should turn on the shaft with a little bit of resistance. I put a new stop ring in mine when I got it, but your old one is probably fine. After the whole stem and shaft are cleaned, wipe everything down. Give the basket a good cleaning while the agitator is out. Now give the agitator a good cleaning, especially the underside. Clean out the splined hole with a degreaser or the WD-40 again. Use the toothbrush to scrub inside the hole. Wash it all down and dry it. Twist up the corner of a rag and stuff it down in the hole to dry it. You can use a screwdriver, but be careful. You don't want to damage the splines or the stop ring seat. Then lubricate the shaft, stop ring, and top of the stem seal, where the washer and retaining spring is. I think I even greased the spanner nut, in case it has to come off someday. I don't know if it will do any good or not. I'm not sure how big the air bubble underneath the agitator is. It protects the parts. I'm sure you've figured that out by now. Put some grease up in the splined hole before you put the agitator back on. I think I've heard of people using Vaseline for grease. I used Poly-lube. The Maytag store here had a jar of it, so I used it for several things. I don't know if it's necessary or not, but I oriented the stop ring in a certain way before I replaced the agitator. Maybe someone on here with more knowledge than I can answer this question. There are high and low spots on the stop ring. I lined up one of the high spots on the ring with one of the high spots on the shaft. That makes every other spot on the ring NOT line up with the shaft. I suppose this makes the agitator seal and the ring pop into it's seat when the agitator is pushed down. There's nothing in the service manuals I have about this. If someone has the answer to this, please comment. After you've done these things you can polish up the agitator and the inside of the basket with some Pledge, turn your tub light on and get some really knock-out pictures. Sometime when you have the front panel off again, take a picture of the tub bearing and post it on here. It's between the bottom of the tub and the transmission. By looking at the rest of the machine, I'm willing to bet you have the old style tub bearing. If you do, it can be oiled very easily, without having to take the whole machine apart. And it sure helps it spin. You can find the spot under the machine by spinning the transmission until the trans. and the counter-weight are out of the way and then you'll have good access to the bearing. If you can get a hold of a hypodermic syringe (about 3cc's) and a large bore needle (maybe a 14, not sure), you can inject the bearing with 3 to 5cc's of turbine oil and when you pull out the needle the hole seals up. The rubber goes back together because the needle's not that big. The wicking inside the bearing soaks up the oil and when you put it into spin the bearing sucks up that oil and you've added years of life to your machine. Well, I've gone and told you way more than you asked for. Sorry. Start checking the old threads. You can find a lot of good info in there. Have fun. Brian |
