That combo would probably be from about 1968 or 69 when they changed from the pedestal mounted control panel to the slanted control panel, but still kept the clear square window.  That round pebbled glass window that came later served almost no purpose as a window.  The top of the machine is porcelain so that is probably not rust on it, but merely staining.  What a hell of an environment.

Did anyone read the owner's manuals for machines in stores?

And maybe once or twice adopt them?

Or order them?

I hope John Combo got this since he has been searching hi and lo for one, recruiting me in the search (I volunteered), chasing after one in a museum in Iowa, contacting a mysterious shadow Maytag club, all kinds of detective fun following urban myths, one of which was the existence of TWO combos in another museum.

We just spoke about it, at length, yesterday. I've got my fingers crossed, and I'm going to call him now.

This is a GE combo, not the one John is after.

I went off half-cocked.

The eyes saw GE and the brain read MT. Called John all excited about it while he was on his way home, still thinking it was a Maytag. A comedy of errors, all mine.

I have been searching for a Maytag Combo for him without success and he was ever the gentleman, as usual, and overlooked the brain misfire. He's quite a guy, an unsung hero and treasure at Automatic Washer. Thanks for the motivational nudge.

Congratulations! The machine is looking nice. The dryer control is not a timer. It's a thermostat.

Had a 1980 TOL Filter Flo with a Mini Basket with the sam style control panel. It was a real work horse, only repairs in 18 years was 2 clutch replacements and a belt until the transmission started leaking than locked up at 19 years old. I didn't realize that slanted control panel went back as far as 1968

one timer

Sorry.........didn't mean to make that plurel. It was late and I wanted to post some pics of the combo. I am going to have to go through the whole machine and check everything before I even try to fire it up. Does anyone have any hints of trouble spots for these machines that I should check out first? How are these machines in drying mode? I've read through a lot of old posts but few people talk about how well these machines dry.

Slanted panel

Spin-It, I believe this was introduced in '64 or '65, as one of my neighbors got a set in '65 that had that style panel. The TOL models (1250 series) used a different control panel from '64 to '66 that is my favorite for GE. The more common slanted panel was used - in varying color schemes - until just a few years before the end of the Filter-Flo models.

Drying

Well, they run hot and dry slowly, but produce very soft dried fabrics. It has two heating elements. If the regular dry button is pushed, it starts drying with both heating elements glowing orange/red. From the point when the heat first cycles, it only uses one heating element for the rest of the dry cycle. If you press Delicate, it starts drying with only one heating element. Setting the dry control determines the final temperature the load will reach so if you set the dryness in the delicate zone, the fabrics will not get as hot. Like any time/temp auto-dry control, the timer motor does not operate when the heat is on. The drying is faster when the cold water used for condensing is colder like in the winter or if you have spring water, but it uses a half a gallon a minute so you should make a provision for reusing over 30 gallons of warm water that will be produced from drying a load of clothes. Also, since you have other machines, you should spin the load as dry as possible after the final rinse, before drying in the combo. The GE combo did not have the condensation chamber and circulator of some of the faster drying combos. The cold water sprays into the fabric softener dispenser where it hits a small metal plate before flowing down the side of the outer tub and into the sump. If your cold water pressure is too high, the clothes will never dry because the spray of the water will keep rewetting them. Some steam gets past this plate and flowing water and escapes through the little fabric softener dispenser drawer making the drawer and the right front corner of the machine very warm during drying. You will note the presence of an access panel in the drum. That allows you to clean lint out of the strainer in the bottom of the outer tub. It also allows access to the thermostat on the right hand side of the outer tub. This delicate tube will collect lint over time and the lint should be carefully wiped from the tube.

Yes, the slanted control panel was introduced on wshers and dryers in the early mid 60s, but the control panel of the combo was not redesigned until 67-68. Maybe they had to use up all of the pedestal style panels before changing the design.

Dave we worked on several hundred GE Combos and probably scraped a hundred more. Email me your phone # and I can walk you through the trouble spots. I also have boxes of good used parts for these machines.

combo abuse...

...we had one in coppertone, with the pedestal control panel-My dad always oversudsed it, & it would drool onto the floor- I liked making it suck sinkful after sinkful of water back into it, & as I recall it began to leak onto the floor when the water was about 2/3 up onto the window- I always got impatient with the length of time it would take to dry stuff, we always kept it set on #8- even back then, I wanted a Whirlpool top loader like the pink one our neighbor had down the street-We lived with this combo from 1967-1969
