Hotpoint Supermatic Twin Tub

spiraclean's profile picture
Hi Darren,
Congratulations on your Hotpoint Twin Tub, they are great washers and interestingly they were the fastest spinning washers ever sold in the UK at 3100 RPM spin speed, they will extract water from loads spun in the fastest of front loaders. The Spiraclean agitator is both gentle and thorough and will never tangle.
Production of the Hotpoint Supermatic Twin Tub and the Electronic 1050 De Luxe Top Loader ceased in 1998. I bought one of the last Superrmatic De Luxe models produced in 1998; it has automatic deep rinsing in the spin tub. I love the great hands on laundry fun.

All the best.
Hugh

Hi Darren,
The 3100 RPM Spin is very quiet as it is powered by an Induction Motor instead of the more common and much noisier carbon brush motor. I have had my one spinning with the lid open; the drum is turning so fast all you can see is a blur. The automatic deep rinsing uses a circle of water jets surrounding the opening of the spin tub to spray and saturate the load, a pressure switch cycles the spin motor on and off, when the water is clear flick the Rinse-Spin switch to the spin position and turn off the water, it’s great fun and rinses very thoroughly.
I recommend Ariel for Handwash and Twin Tubs in this machine it has the original Ariel scent and cleans superbly, the scent is just amazing when you boil in it.
Have fun.

All the best.
Hugh

Yay!!!

You go boi :-). Can't wait to come and use it - already saving up a load for it :-D. How did the rags turn out? I must admit hearing it on the phone was soooo good, can't wait to use it for real :-D. BTW How long did it take to heat in the end?

Hugh - I had always thought that Hotpoint had produced these right up into 2000 (they're in the first 2000 brochure, with the last of the WM series washers) - I had the impression that these were discontinued along with the WM series for the new generation WMA series. Sad really to see the last of the twin tubs go away - my grandma as you know had a 60's automatic toploader and it was gr8 :-).

Take care,

Jon :-)

Hi Jon,
According to Hotpoint UK production ceased in 1998; I know this because I placed an order for an electronic 1050 De Luxe Top Loader in June of that year, the retailer Hanna & Brown was unable to supply the machine as it had to be ordered directly from Hotpoint. I received a letter from Hotpoint two weeks later advising me they would be unable to supply my Top Loader as due to low demand there would be no further production of the Top Loaders or Twin Tub washers, they did however have a number of Twin Tubs in stock. I immediately ordered my Hotpoint Twin Tub and received it in August 1998. I also purchased my Whirlpool Top Loader in 1998 as I was unable to get the Hotpoint model, both machines have been running flawlessly ever since.

All the best.
Hugh

Spinning with the lid open

spiraclean's profile picture
Hi Darren,
I removed the brake assembly on the spin clutch and operated the rocker switch inside the rear cover that is normally engaged by closing the lid; I would not recommend this as there is a serious risk of electrocution operating any machine with the rear cover removed, also the spinning drum could easily rip your arm off. There is honestly nothing to see, the drum is spinning so fast it’s a total blur.
You will love the original Ariel it smells fantastic.

All the best.
Hugh

Hey Darren!

You''re making me so impatient now! I have a couple of loads saving up already, one for the Logic and another for the twinnie :-p LOL. Are you gonna keep it at your brothers? Cos I'm sure you have enough room in your ensuite bathroom for your twintub LOL.

Hi Hugh,

Perhaps Hotpoint were being naughty then and still putting the models in the brochure :-). I do remember emailing them myself in 2001 asking if they will reconsider manufacturing the Spiraclean toploader & twintub but I got the same response in the fact that they lost demand, and there's no hope now what with them belonging to Indeshit and all that. Definitely did see these still around until 2000 though - I guess maybe places stocked up on them beyond the production years. A shame really as I really was a fan of the Spiraclean toploader (there is one on Ebay at the moment), however I am seriously considering getting a Whirlpool DD, mainly after your testimonies. However it will be in the garage (hopefully next to a square door Hoover not unlike Darren's), my room is crammed enough full of crap as it is LOL (and I bet Darren can testify to that :-D). Off topic, but how have you been doing recently? Not heard from ya in a while :-) *Big Hugs*

Take care all,

Jon

Hi Darren,
I knew you would love the scent of Ariel; it has had that same scent for at least the past 30 years.
Always load the spinner carefully in layers to get the best balance and always use the spin mat; you will not damage anything in the spin but I recommend you cool synthetics by hosing with cold water before spinning to avoid setting creases. Synthetics should be spun for approx 30 seconds after the drum reaches it's 3100 RPM speed. Cottons should be spun for 4 minutes after the drum is up to speed, you don’t need a 4 minute spin after the wash less will do but allow 4 minutes for the final spin.

Happy washing.

All the best.
Hugh

Hey hugh!
thank u for the advice! so ur telling me that sorta speed isnt gonna wreck my synthetics? i've been using the hosepipe method with a sprinkler end so which is quite good:D it did a good job. i really like it. im sure jon will agree when he's used it.

Hi Darren,
No the 3100 RPM spin speed of your Hotpoint Supermatic Twin Tub will not damage your synthetics as long as you cool them after the wash and before any spinning, if you spin them without cooling you will set creases. When washing synthetics or delicates load only a few items at a time, this allows the laundry to move freely with the water currents avoiding rubbing and damage from the agitator the same advice applies to Top Loaders.
You have probably noticed two water level lines in the wash bowl the lower level is of course for smaller loads; it’s a lot of fun and very splashy using the lower level. Have fun.

Happy washing.

All the best.
Hugh

Thanks for another nice video. That looks like a fun machine.

Hugh, I started using Ariel in 1982, is Ariel Handwash that same smell?

Darren, that is way too cool! I didn't know the twinnie had a filter-flo-pan. Is it called a filter-flo-pan in the UK? Thanks for the video!

Jeff

Spiraclean Action

spiraclean's profile picture
Hi Darrin,
Thanks for the Spiraclean action video; I must get my one out for a run again, I have not been using it lately as my Osteoarthritis has been really bad.

Hi Louis,
Yes it’s the Ariel Handwash that has that wonderful original scent which I can remember since I was 4 years old and that was 30 years ago. It’s my favorite scent along with original Tide.

Hi Jeff,
Hotpoint UK was a wholly owned subsidiary of GE; the filter pan has been in use since the 1960’s on Hotpoint Supermatic Twin Tubs. I am deeply saddened that GE sold Hotpoint UK and Creda to Indesit Company (Formerly known as Merloni Elettrodomestici).

Happy Washing

All the best.
Hugh

Hey Hugh!
i have to agree with you i am deeply saddened by the take over of hotpoint/creda. i have to ask myself the question. like i said to you about hoover. i wonder what direction they would've gone under there own power? also what the future holds for them? in term of look i see them as rebadged indesits soon i really do. any thoughts?

Darren
