Mom Had Two Filter-Flo Washers Over 39 Years Total
My Mom had two Filter-Flo Washers: a 1960 and a 1969. She gave the 1960 to my Grandmother, who ran it 20 more years. My Mom's 1969 lasted over 30 years. They both washed extremely well. They removed a lot of lint. I was especially fond of the 1960 -- the motor had a nice deep hum. The panel was backlit. It had a black, three-vane bakelite agitator with a turquoise filter pan and a spreckled solid tub.
i have an'81 filter flo in my "daily driver"lineup(mah3000 neptune and
spendide combomatic also in the DD lineup)
i really enjoy my filter flo and these, like other vintage designs have
their own distinctive sounds-hard to describe but includes;background
motor groan, sound of drainwater sucking back down the drainhose when
motor starts in agitate direction, little clunk at start of agitation,
water blasting down the standpipe when spin starts, suspension squeaks,
and when motor stops at end of spin a loud"clack!",sometimes a double
clack.
it has been very reliable over the 20yrs i have had it,but some repairs
have been needed over the years;
-tranny boot
-pump,started leaking-replaced with a used one i had
-tranny input seal
-belt
-two sets of clutch shoes
-motor,bushings wore out-rotor started dragging, replaced with motor from
a damaged '81 stripped for parts(this is a very high miles filter flo,
usually washers end up at the dump well before the motor wears out)
right now the rubber vibration hub in the agitator is starting to get
some lash, have a good agitator waiting...
I also have a 1980 hotpoint rim flo-a close cousin of the filter flo..
Filter flos do have a few nits:
-rinky dink 2 speed clutch on some models
-clutch shaft runout is usually present
-paint on body does not always quite match the porcelain top
-rust pinholes sometimes are found in the outer tubs
-can really thump away when imballanced
-tranny input shaft leaks a known problem
