Got a good friend in Columbus, OH, who happens to be a Wascomat distributor, and a former Norge, Blackstone distributor as well. Spent all day up there today, on a well worth trip.

He's going to auction off one of his laundromats pretty soon. These W-185's are being fixed.

These series1 W-73's are waiting to be sent to the scrap yard sadly.

While up here I got to see my first Wascomat Gen6 in person!

He manages to have one 50LB machine that he was going to scrap He said it was a w-184, but when I got up here and saw the machine, well it's a little better than a w-184. Here is a picture after getting the machine off the truck. The machine weighs ~600LB. So if you going to move one of these, you better eat your Wheaties!

Post# 487123 , Reply# 7   1/7/2011 at 20:38 (4,829 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

The machine is FL184(Flex-O-Matic), looks like Jan,1987 manufacture date. Sounds about right. A 3 phase machine!

Looks to need a motor! Should not be hard to find one.

Top and front are SS! Machine works by Punch Cards

Machine can be operated manually too. Also has Temp gage.

closer look, don't know what attaches here, but it is directly connected to the outer drum.

valves-> has hot and cold valves, and another inlet valve, not sure what the third one is for.

Post# 487141 , Reply# 15   1/7/2011 at 21:07 (4,829 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

It's a massive machine, needs a good going over, a motor, and door lock mech. assembly. I was also given a used door lock mech for this machine, belts, an extra punch card reader, and several punch cards. Another machine crossed off the list of essential machines needed. Got to locate manual to figure out how to program the cards. This machine is OPL, so it has some additional features over coin-op machines. An awesome find!!

He also had a EX30? a 65LB machine that had 2 motors, one motor is for wash/normal extract, the other motor is for high extract. Due to that machine being not only bigger(taller and wider), it also weighed a few hundred pounds more, would have been impossible to unload from the pickup truck, so I could not take it home.

You need 3 phase power for this baby.

The tube connector on the side is for chemical injection. Looks to be home rigged, as there should be ports on the back for chemical injection near the water valves.

The 3 water valves are 1-hot, 2-cold and 3-hot to flush the detergent compartment.

Most parts from a Gen 4 machine should work on this. Get an extra dump valve, Berkert (drain) solenoid, door lock assembly, and water valves. If the bearings are good, this should be an easy rebuild and you should get lots more years out of it.

But you need 3 phase power...

Is he also crushing the TD3030 dryers? He should. I have 13 of them that I want to crush myself with a smile on my face and a tap in my toes!

Post# 487154 , Reply# 17   1/7/2011 at 21:40 (4,829 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

3 phase power I have covered. The Ipso and Primus that I use as a main machine run on 3 phase. Correct, the FL184 is a Gen 4 machine. Bearings are appear to be good, but I will have to do a more thorough check when it is not so cold outside. No ports for chemical injection on the back. Why is there a dedicated valve on the very back of the machine for the detergent compartment? Is this exclusive to this model only, or is this also on some coin-op gen 4 series machines?

I asked him about the TD3030's and he has several down that need blower motors. When I was at the 2nd mat(the gen6 machine) I walked by a few TD3030's that were excessively loud, sounded like the blowers were going bad. They look like nice machines, but I got a feeling that they are not as reliable.

Hard Mount Machine ?

Correct, this machine has a rigid base, no suspension. This machine MUST be bolted down.

Wow, 600 pounds, my Duo's are whimpy at 375!

I love the tempeature dial on the front all machines should have that item!

Can you put up a pic of what a punch card looks like, is it like the Keymatics??
Thanks

The TD3030's are a complete nightmare. If it isn't the blower (E05 error) then it is the temp input thermistor (E17 error). And then there is the E14 gas valve errors. And the E15 errors when you forget to clean the secondary lint screens. Then there is the E99 general failure error. I have the first of the first of these. When they work, they are phenomenal, but look at them wrong and they will blow an error.

The extra valve is on the larger capacity machines to assist with the fill (it can be long with just the 2 valves) and to flush sticky, gooey additives into the machine and keep the dispenser box clean. This is the way it is on the Gen 5 and 6 machines; the Gen 4 setup may be different -- the center valve with the 3 solenoids are for the soapbox. Connect this to hot to keep the box a bit more fresh.

I was looking at the drain. Is it the motorized one or the pancake/Berkert water solenoid one? Looks like the motorized one to me; I didn't see a Berkert solenoid up near the water valves.

Post# 487327 , Reply# 22   1/8/2011 at 16:07 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

Yes, this machine uses the motorized dump valve. It sits in the center on the machine at the bottom. The plate that it is sitting on looks to be very badly rusted. I may have to replace it with something like SS.

How many mats to you have? What series and brands of machines do you have?

That machine uses the (tit) programme cards. they are grey and come in 60 or 90 min formulas. they little tits that you cut off for each 30 seconds of time for what you what it to do.I had a 75 lb machine like it a few years ago and LOVED it. but bearings went and beacuse of its age was replaced. They will do a VERY good job of washing and will out wash the ipso hands down.

Ah, Mac You mean these?

Post# 487338 , Reply# 25   1/8/2011 at 16:40 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

I was given several these as well as some blank ones. I don't know if these will cause my machine to function as it should, but it will be interesting as to what the machine will do with these cards.

Post# 487339 , Reply# 26   1/8/2011 at 16:43 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

I was told that the card is inserted all the way in the reader, and you turn the black knob to the left.

Post# 487341 , Reply# 27   1/8/2011 at 16:45 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

From how the reader is constructed, it looks like the card comes out of the reader during the course of the cycle.

Post# 487342 , Reply# 28   1/8/2011 at 16:47 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

He gave me an extra reader too.

Post# 487343 , Reply# 29   1/8/2011 at 16:50 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

It has several switches that hit against the bumps of the card, has a motor to advance card.

Post# 487345 , Reply# 30   1/8/2011 at 16:52 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

Looks like a terminal clip fits here over the terminals of the switches.

Post# 487347 , Reply# 31   1/8/2011 at 16:55 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

When you turn the knob to the left, this mechanism feeds the card.

Post# 487361 , Reply# 32   1/8/2011 at 17:16 (4,828 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

I'm not sure what machine these cards go to, he gave me these as well.

What Brand and model was this 75LB. machine?

Post# 487565 , Reply# 34   1/9/2011 at 14:36 (4,827 days old) by sudsman ()
Melvin

You can use the machine on manual if you turn the program card to off. it will keep there until you turn it back on.. use a blank card for manual operation. the Wascomat I had was FL 75 but was at least 10 years ago when we traded it in for the 150 Edro Dyna Wash which weighs 2300 lbs.and was a nightmare to get in. Took folklift and 3 men to get it in place. You should NOT have any problems finding any parts you need for that machine, They are still widely used, A lot of them in shirt laundries. the main thing you want to be sure of is too KEEP the cards CLEAN, Spray them with wd 40 about once a mo. and it will keep the reader running right.Wash the off with warm water and let them air dry about once a mo also. If you have to buy any they are EXPENSIVE. If you can find a soap rep that has some left he might just give them to you as they rarely have a use for them anymore. Did you get the card cutter with it? The first pic of the cards are the ones I remember but the other cards may work as well. They had 2 or 2 different styles for those machines. Wascomat tech service is pretty nice to help if you call them just let them think you are a laundry melvins laundry ect. they are not so hip on helping some one off the street. They are just that way.. There a lot of dealers that will help you too. and many of the parts houses will be glad to help. As said there a lot of places that sell Wasco parts.

Mac:
No, didn't get a card cutter with it. I did find a manual of the FL EXSM 35 on-line that gives me an idea of how to cut the cards, and how to read the program on them. However, the functions for that machine are slightly different. Do you still have the manuals to the FL 75 machine you had?

Post# 487607 , Reply# 36   1/9/2011 at 16:34 (4,827 days old) by sudsman ()
Sorry melvin

They are long gone.. Wascomat will help you with it I am sure. Or pretty sure you can still get a manual for it with out too much problem.

Post# 487633 , Reply# 37   1/9/2011 at 17:29 (4,827 days old) by supremewhirlpol ()

Thanks Mac. I'll give them a call within a week or two. Overall, the machine looks very good for being ~24 years old. My Series 1 W-73 machine is in much worse shape. Who ever had this machine took very good care of it. Whether the electrics are in the same condition, we will see.

Just could not resist one of these series 2 W123's. All 4 of the machines look bad and need body work and other restoration. I got the best looking one out of the 4. Looks similar to these series 2 machines. It is rated as a 30LB machine, was made ~1979. weighs ~450LB. I have a gen3 series 1 machine that I will compare this one with when I start restoring them.

Heavyweights!

Wow - I didn't know that anyone was collecting the big commercial units!

On the early Series 1 W73 machines - I wonder how old they are - perhaps 1970s?

Back in the '70's I remember seeing Wascomats in many laundromats. I also remember seeing big front loaders with the name "Chore Boy" but I don't recall if that was a model or a brand name.

Good luck with the restorations!

Hi Andrew,
The Series 1 W73 machines in post 487116 are dated ~1974. They were all installed at the same time. The series1 W73 that I have came from this mat. It was one of the machines farther down the row. If you look at my profile, you'll see that I have a few big machines now. The picture of the machine in my avatar is what I use as a daily driver.
