Steve, my KDS-14 has a quirk- on the drain cycle.
sometimes it doesn't drain, the solenoid clunks but no water comes out.

I replaced the drain hose as the former had a 90degree elbow in it, now when it does drain the water almost shoots out of the disposal! But it doesn't always drain and if I dont' catch it early the prewash water will travel all the way through to the final rinse! YUK!

If I stop the machine at drain and wait to hear a gurgle, then when I turn it back on the water will drain.

Can the drain valve plate come off the drain plunger shaft inside the valve??
I can see the plunger move out when the solenoid activates, but no water flows.

Mystified in Melrose

good to the last drop?

Jon,
First, make sure that the drain lever itself moves up and down freely and look inside the tank to where the large opening is for the water to drain out and make sure that nothing has gotten caught that would prevent the drain from opening completely. Since you say if you stop it it will drain better, then maybe the lever is stuck.
I also assume that you have the pump drain on it since it drains into the disposer. (duh) The impeller on the drain pump is held in place by as small diameter roll pin and I remember very well how some of them would eventually rot away and then the impeller would not turn at the right speed and would either not pump at all or would be very anemic.

I actually repaired my cousin's KDS14 when it did this by using a copper paper clip and put it thru the hole in the impeller and then twisted it to hold it there. IIRC, that repair lasted nearly 20 years and was still working when he curb sided the machine in the late 90's. I actually had a spare pump for him but he never used it and he gave it back to me when he dumped the machine. Unfortunately, I did not save the pump! Who Knew????

If you are really careful, you can get the pump out and check it for this problem. Then you can disassemble the drain pump and fix the problem Just be careful and remember where everything goes.

Hope this helps.

will try all, I have spares but want to avoid breaking into them this early in the game. Haven't checked the drain lever, I'll get out the Doctrine and let you know what I find.

thanks

So Steve

the drain lever and rod check okay.

So am heading down to the pump! John tells me he has had experience with a dropped drain line and mine is definitely dropped so will try resetting that first before breaking into any lines.

I was reading Doctrine the other night and found mentioned a KDS-44 machine! It was counter height!! I want one of those!!!
18 inches up on a HOBART cabinet!!!
