We have the built in version of this great performing machine at our museum. Unfortuney it was not the most durable DW ever made and few survived. The linner cycle indicator was mechanical in operation and as the timer was advanced it just pulled the indicator along, then at the end of the cycle it had wound up a little spring ant it would trip and quickly unwind as the pointer flipped back to the left side. If you or anyone find yourself in the Washington area and want to see this or anything else get in touch.

David, what a kinda coincidence you remembered this dishwasher and asked about it. The coincidence is that we had family friends who lived in a small town outside of Houston (toward DaDoES' direction) that built a new house for themselves probably in like 1966 to 1968. He worked for Westinghouse all his adult life and naturally the new house had Westinghouse appliancees. they had this dishwasher. The appliances were in the goldtone. I remember after dinner the dishwasher was running and saw all the buttons with the lighted cycle line display. The dishwasher had even paused and was heating water and the little red light was glowing on the cycle lie display. I was only at their house only once. They were next door neighbors at our old house so they knew me since I was brought home form the hospital. When the parents remodeled the 1948 kitchen in 196X, this same dishwasher was included. Now the daughter I've kept up with all these years. But the son and daughter-in-law I had not seen (moste likely) since that onne dinner evenig event and that's been 35 to 40 years. My sister and I had Christmas dinner with the daughter. Her brother and sister-in-law live in a smalkl town between where I live and where she lives (I have never seen them here in town). Anyway, the brother and wife were there for Christmas dinner also--first time I'd seen them in all this time. I ALMOST brought up me remembering this dishwasher in their house. They didn't live in the house ver long as he was transferred to Pittsburgh shortly thereafter with Westinghouse and remained there until he retired and moved back here.
As a side-note, their parents at one time owned a washateria with their best friends. This had to be before I turned 7 and we moved away because I used to go to the washateria with them sometimes in the egvening when he & his wife went to go collect the money and clean up. the place had the Westinghouse washer (round like kevin has) as well as Bendix double loaders. Every time I went, the dad would always unlock one of the Bendix coin collectors, reach in and start the machine while empty so I could watch it go through the cycle while they cleaned up. |

I lived in apartment complex in Austin my Jr. year in college--1975-1976- that was probably uilt around 1968 or 1969. The oldest section had a model that looked similar to the SFK2D panel above, except it had two plastic buttons on the right side of the dial--Normal and Rinse & Hold. I loved this dishwasher. It's probably the best cleaning apartment dishwasher I ever had. and the capacity was huge. held a ton of stuff and it all god thoroughly clean. And the range as cool. the cooktop was two slightly different levels and I think the control knbos were on the right hand side of the cooiktop area. So cool to have the back burners slightly elevated from the front two making it easier to access pots in the back.

In the house where my family lived until 1986 (when I was 5) there was an Avocado built-in DW from the late 1960s that I believe was a Westinghouse, possibly an SFK2D. I don't remember much about it, although it seemed to break down with some regularity. If someone has a Westinghouse of this area, may I request a close-up of the lock handle?
Thanks, Dave |
