They look like green. Not in bad shape, but I see heavy control panel wear around the center timer dial on the washer...

Hmmm....they look harvest gold to me.

It always bugs me when the dryer is on the left and the washer is on the right. Is there a protocol for proper placement?

wahser/dryer placement protocol

Depends on which way the door and lids open on the machines. The ideal situation is where the washer lid opens back and the dryer door drops down. If the dryer door opens right or left, another factor is if the door opens ALL the way or only 90 degrees. Basically, which side the wahser or dryer is on is decided by the best way clothes can be loaded/unloaded without washer lids/doors or dryer doors getting in the way. MEthinks the absolute BEST way is FL washers with drop down doors mated with dryers with drop down doors. In the case of my Lady K's, the positioning was obvious, washer lid opens to left, dryer door is drop down, so dryer is on the right.

In our basement, the dryer is on the left, because it's closest to the window, where the vent exits, and also where the plug is.Just how the house was set up.

placement

In a case like that, it's just a matter of a longer duct and cord to make the placement conform to easiest loading/unloading if necessary

Placement is a choice. I pefer the washer on the left, dryer on the right. BUT, like my center pull Maytag's, washer must be on right and dryer on left like kenmore1978 says, that's the way it works the best for loading/unloading.

The PERFECT set would have both washer and dryer by top loaders (dryer is top loader h-axis like the F&P) with the washer on the left and the dryer on the right.

It is much easier that way. I had it the wrong way when I lived in my trailer. Sir Frigemore on the right and old GE on the left. UGGHHH! It was a pain.

washer dryer placement

From an ergonomic perspective work naturally moves from right to left as most people are right handed. This would imply the washer on the right and the dryer on the left.

This question comes up over and over in labs particularly with dishwashers - should they be on the right or the left of the sink.

When I was a doctoral student at Ohio State, we conducted a research project on dishwashers. We brought in dozens of typical dishwashers (people) and had a standard load of dirty dishes stacked in a standard setup. We timed how long it took to load the dishwasher (machine) depending on whether it was on the right of the left of the sink.

There was a statictical difference, when the dishwasher (machin)was located on the left and the dishwasher (person) was right handed, it took less time to stack the test load.

I don't know of any studies like this for washer dryer placement.

looks harvest to me. I'm left-handed. My dishwasher is to right of sink. My washe is to the left of the dryer.

Growing up, washer was on right, dryer on left with that door moving left to right. Wasd a pain.

When I was living at Henry's house, the DW was on the right and for me it was easy to load right handed. When I was Bri's house, the DW was on the left and it was a pain in the buttocks. And I'm right handed. So I guess I work left to right.

The worst installation I ever saw of a Kenmore washer & dryer, of this same vintage, was at some family friend's in North Dakota. The machines were in the back hall of the house, behind sliding closet doors. They were right next to each other, dryer on the left, but because of the sliding doors, only one machine could be accessed at a time. Unloading the washer meant taking the clothes out and into a basket, reloading and starting the washer and then sliding the doors to the other side and loading/unloading the dryer... This didn't last long with five people in the house, the eventually just pulled the doors and tracks out and left the whole thing open.

That Kenmore lid always puzzled me, what do you suppose the reason for that was - and all those years too! The only time it wasn't in the way was if the machine was installed in a corner or against a wall on the left side. Pity the poor soul whose dryer was on the left!

I'm righthanded and I prefer to have my dishwasher on the right too.

beautiful Kenmores Whats the vintage?

Growing up, my mom had the washer on the right, dryer left. When she bought new models in 1977 she initially looked at Kenmore, but decided against Kenmore and Whirlpool because the washer was too wide, and the w/d would be touching in their little stall.
Would that matter??
In my house the washer is on the right, lid opens back, and the dryer is on the left with a drop down door. It works ok for me I guess.
My dishwasher is to the left of the sink, and it does irritate me mainly because my disposal is in the right side of the sink, and there's a whole sink inbetween. Every other place I have lived has had the disposal in the left sink, with the DW right next to it.
Is there a rule for that?

Dishwasher in the left sink.

Jeff, I have 2 roommates that are plumbers and they say that there is no rule, but the disposal should be closest to the dishwasher.

Thanks Wash!
Because of the configuration of the pipes under my sink, at present I can only have the disposal in the right side. If I can figure out how to install one of those "Y" things I will switch it.
