Hey guys,

Don't know if this has been posted but the link below is to a CL ad from Louisville, KY that has advertised a set of pink Westinghouse SpaceMates -
Laundromat and matching Clothes Dryer, Tappan gas range/oven and GM/Frigidair
refrigerator. Nice set up for a retro house renovation or just to collect.

There was not a price listed - will have to contact the person listing the items via the CL link. Could be the start of a dream!

Most folks on this board have never seen a 25" Spacemate in person.

There are just a few images of the mechanics of these rare old items on this board.

Here I do not own or use a 25" spacemate; thus have no test data on what the clothes they hold; thus I have never posted any data on another thread on what a 25" machine can wash . Thus you are somewhat confused.

Thus you must be confusing the radically more common 27" 3 belt westy with the ultra rare 25" model; a common mistake. The 25" model has a smaller spin basket; different pump, smaller frame, smaller capacity. Its sales volumes were probably 1/100 to 1/1000 of 27" 3 belt westys. It is not the same machine as a 27" westy; it spins the opposite direction too. Most parts are different; except the ball bearings and water seal Q9303. Even the slinky spring clutch is different, and most of its belts too.

The 25" spacemate was a niche market for cabins, apartments, giant old RV's. If one wants to chase parts; the offical support was gone on them over 1/4 century ago.

Thus some of us would be interested in the capacity of a 25" spacemate; because about none anymore are actually in use.

IRONRY OF CL AD

combo52's profile picture

Ken is it the fact that all these are non GE appliances and the ad is from Louisville Kentucky?

3BW The 25" machines were very common around here but of coerce since they were discontinued in 1964 they are rare now. We do still have some parts for these. The reason they spun backwards was because most were sold in the southern hemisphere below the equator.

Not really irony, I pursued these locally and I know that someone had already purchased them after I looked at them that's all. It's an outdated ad.

3-belt:

I've been reading your 24" commentary in the other forum, and while this may be a 25" machine, your comment of "Non USA folks might be interested that those old Westy spacemates are just 25" wide!" seems to trying to stab up something. There is no real reason to bring up the US vs non-US washer argument on this thread, whether that was your intention or not, it's not really relevant here.

A European on this board might wonder how an actual old US made 25" wide FL machine "can hold" versus their common 24" wide FL washers.

Others might not.

Folks differ in their interests, some wonder, some have no interest.

An even more confusing thing is that after Westinghouse dropped the 25" line the "spacemate" name was used in the mid to later 1970's for full 27" wide westinghouse FL washers ; when the target market was for stacked washer dryer.

Ie a 27" wide Westinghouse FL washer on the bottom; and 27" westinghouse dryer on the top was sold as westinghouse spacemate.

Thus to reader; a Westinghouse "spacemate" can be either:

(1) the old original 1955 to 196X? 25" small rare washer;

(2) *OR* a much larger 27" frame more common machine too.

The name westinghouse "spacemate" name was used for both sizes machines. If one is a guru on spacemates; one might know that that is a 25" model. To another across the pond it might be so easy. They to might also think that all spacemates are 25" wide too; and not 27".

That is why the comment:

"Non USA folks might be interested that those old Westy spacemates are just 25" wide! "

was made.

maybe is is known my all folks here in the USA; but a lessor number of folks in Europe know this. Ie that the spacements in that the posters link is the smaller, rarer, older 25" variant.

***Here I would like to know what that 25" old westy will wash compared to a modern European 24" model. You seem to have no interest, thus this curiosity question/ wonder seems to bother you. ie you have less natural curiosity that I do.

Since NOBODY has ever shown what an actual 25" space mate will wash; I wonder; yuou do not. Ie it is not in your DNA. Here is is; I am an engineer, thus comparsions are natural. Thus comparing A versus B is what I live and breath.

Others may not care either what an old obscure rare item will do, it is not in your curiosity. Ie it even seems to bug that others wonder; since it bothers you so much.

The stab if any is to see what a 25" old spacemate will do; ie a natural curosity for some of us.

Here the curosity factor of what a old 25" westy will wash versus a 24" European FL washer is here with me.

ie it really does not bother me to ask to see an actual owner of a 25" westy show us some test washes.

These machines are about all gone; why be a party pooper and try to avoid any real shows of what an old machine will do or not do?

If a comparasion bothers you just stop reading the thread if a test bothers you.

In a decade maybe none of these old 25" machines will work. Maybe somebody else with a natural curosity might want to see a 25" machine in action too with some test results; before they are all dead and crushed.

Well....

macboy91si's profile picture

"Thus you must be confusing the radically more common 27" 3 belt westy with the ultra rare 25" model; a common mistake."

These machines are actually not "SpaceMates", they're simply a "Laundromat Deluxe" and matching dryer. I am well aware that they are the same thing as the SpaceMate, but these machines are pre-label. I am also well aware of the differences between a 25" and a 27".

If it's an actual test that you'd like, and not some strange quest to prove the superiority of the 27" US F/L over the "dinky" 24" European machines, then perhaps Sudslock1 will oblige you once he gets the machine. That is the taste that I have in my mouth from the banter in the Deluxe forum.

"***Here I would like to know what that 25" old westy will wash compared to a modern European 24" model. You seem to have no interest, thus this curiosity question/ wonder seems to bother you. ie you have less natural curiosity that I do."

Yes I do wonder how these machines actually do work, I was the 1st person that looked at them! The only reason I passed was my lack of resources to take on another project at the moment. I am very glad that they are going to a good home, they are in very good condition.

"These machines are about all gone; why be a party pooper and try to avoid any real shows of what an old machine will do or not do?

I'm not sure how I'm being a "party pooper" exactly. I also never mentioned that any kind of test or comparison necessarily bothers me, I just think you have an agenda with your constant prodding in various threads. Not to say I don't applaud your tenacity.

Let it be known I suppose:

3beltwesty wants to see and compare a 25" machine to a European style 24" front-load machine.

25" WESTINGHOUSE LAUNDROMAT WASHER

combo52's profile picture

I have the original 1955  version of this machine and will do a video some day, BUT you can't compare it to a 24" European machine as there hundreds of different models and some have twice the capacity as others. I don't see any point to this discussion at all as the capacity of 27" machines also varies by more than 100% between different models and brands.

Thanks, I saved the picture, I still think this is the most handsome unit Westinghouse made. I always have a hard time explaining these to people (the dial is on top) as I guess many have not seen this variant.

I think the "SpaceMate" term wasn't introduced until spring 1956 - maybe the small dryer was introduced then too?
